So the other day, my teacher gently, but firmly, suggested that I acquire a new bow for my viola. She has mentioned that it is not a great bow in the past, but she basically said at my last lesson, Your bow is Crap. Get a new one. (but not in so many words). It *did* come free with the viola, more or less... it's not a horrid bow (unlike the plastic thing that came with my ex-rental violin acquired in junior high), but it's not a good one. I'm used to it, but I guess it's time to think about getting used to a new one.
She did have some general advice on bow shopping, but given the number of string players on this forum, I was hoping that there might be some more advice out there before I spend a not insignificant amount of money on it first.
What do I need to know about bows? I mean, there's all kinds of different wood, carbon fibers and other synthetic things, all kinds of price ranges... obviously I need to find one that I like - but if I'm used to my current bow (which apparently has funky balance, among other things, according to several people, not just my teacher), how am I going to know? I mean, am I going to end up gravitating towards bows that have similar funky balance because that's what I'm used to?
Anybody know of good shops to check out in my area? (San Francisco Bay Area - I know of a couple places, and am willing to travel some distance if needed). My teacher has suggested that $600-800 would be a reasonable price range, maybe up to $1000, but I shouldn't need a bow that's a lot more expensive than that (unless I really really find one that I love and want to spend the money on it ) I'm mostly just playing for myself right now, but want to get back into chamber music or a community orchestra at some point.
