Hey everybody--just FYI, we're not posting a comments thread for tonight's blog entry. Robin's said what she wants to say on the topic, and opening it up for further discussion seems counter-productive. So, snowdrops tomorrow and back to regular threads.

I know there are a lot of music lovers on this forum, so I thought some of you might be interested in checking out a unique folk-country musician's project.
In the interest of full disclosure, the musician I'm referring to here is my own brother. He is crowdfunding via Kickstarter in order to release his first EP of original songs. Paul is a talented songwriter/singer/guitarist and if this is a musical genre you enjoy, I can heartily recommend the project. You can see a short video where he talks about the EP and his inspirations here. You can also hear a sample track from each of the songs.
Since he's crowdfunding, any exposure he can get is much appreciated...so please feel free to pass the link on to anyone you know who might be interested in this kind of music.
Thanks for taking a look!
Addition on Feb 9th --> The EP is fully funded! Thanks to all who took a look, passed in the link, or supported the project. Much appreciated!

OK, I've heard back from Putnams, so we're all good to go! Here's the directions:
1. If you are organizing a PRC, you need to email me your real name and shipping address as soon as you have a date and time fixed, and at least 3 confirmed attendees. (That's you, plus 2 people.) I will pass your info on to Robin's e-marketer, the Amazing Anna, and she will ship you a book and two posters for raffling purposes. But you do need 3 people to qualify for a prize pack.
2. Remember you can promote these events beyond the forum. Call your friends, talk to the bookshop employees at your friendly local retailer, ask if you can put a sign up at the library. Let's see how many people we can get involved!
3. You're strongly encouraged to take pictures and write up a little blurb on how the party went--Robin is always in the market for blog material. So if you'd like your PRC to be featured on Robin's blog, document it and we'll see what we can do!
4. When you email me I will email you back a pdf with instructions, plus an Official Sign-In Sheet. This is how we'll keep track of entries for the signed book contest--make sure EVERYONE who attends prints their name and email address clearly on this sheet, and then the organizer can either type the list up and email it back to me, or scan it and email me the scan. Remember, organizers get entered twice.
The email I'm using for this purpose is my "business" address: whiteape [at] whiteape [dot] net. If you have questions of general interest, please feel free to post them to this thread and I'll answer them for the benefit of all.

I'm typically a lurker on the blog and forum, but Robin's repeated posts about piano lessons have inspired me. I'd love to find a teacher, but I don't know where to look. I don't know if my earlier teachers were really as dry as I'm remembering, or if they just gave up on a student who could rarely be bothered to practice, but I'm afraid that I'll wind up with someone just as incompatible. (I promise, I've reformed!)
Because this forum seems to be such a gathering of kindred spirits, I'm secretly hoping someone could recommend an actual teacher in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia. If not, I'd really appreciate it if someone with experience in this kind of thing could give me some hints on how to find a good teacher.

Every year at this time we have a 10 day Buskers Festival, where buskers and street performers from round the country and the world come to entertain the city. I work in town right on the edge of Cathedral Square which is a large (and mostly square) paved area in the heart of the city and the buskers perform there all day for this week!
So I bought my camera to work each day and tried to catch one act a day, didn't quite happen but here are the highlights of the ones I did get - LOTS more pix on my Flickr page - and more about the buskers and photography challenges on my Photography Blog

Hi everyone,
It suddenly occurred to me that one or more of you might have acquired (or attempted to acquire) French citizenship and might thus be able to answer a couple of questions. I've been married to my DH for two years now, so I thought I'd start getting ready for the citizenship language test. But I can't find anything about the level of French that I need.
Anyone have the inside info on this?
Cheers,

I've organised our work bookclub to go to the forum on the future of the book on Thursday 27th, and I'll be at a series of events on Saturday 29th, but may pop in for some other sessions at other times.

I have recently purchased a hardcover copy of The Hero And The Crown at a used bookstore, and I'm trying to determine if it is in fact a first edition, and if there were multiple "first edition" printings. It's a hard cover, with a blue stripe around the edges of the cover image, and it says Green Willow Press, 1984 in the front. It does actually say First Edition in the front pages as well, but I know in the past they would sometimes run more than one printing of the first edition, and if there were no changes to the text / layout, they didn't necessarily change the edition number. I don't know if that practice extended into the 80s, however, or if it happened with this particular book. Does anyone know how I can find that information out?
This particular copy would never be of great value even if it was a true First, because it's been rather well-loved, besides having an adhesive book plate in the front indicating that it was a gift from a school to a specific student in 1985. Which is kind of cool in and of itself, actually. I wonder what she did to merit a prize of the latest Newbery title in hardcover, don't you?

FAQ for Pollyanna's Booklist
What is Pollyanna's Booklist?
Pollyanna's Booklist is an ongoing permanent list of books recommended by readers of Robin's blog.
Why Pollyanna?
You know Pollyanna, right? The eternal optimist? That perpetually sunny outlook is the spirit that Robin wishes to be maintained on her blog and forum as much as possible, especially where other authors' works are concerned. When Pollyanna's Booklist was first unveiled in tandem with the current incarnation of the blog, Robin said: "[W]hile I enjoy a good literary trashing as much as the next snippy reader, I don't particularly want that energy hanging around my blog. I only want to give virtual house space to books you want to read and want to suggest other people read."
This means that if you did not particularly enjoy a given book, Pollyanna's Booklist is not the place for you to talk about it. There are plenty of other websites, including Amazon and LibraryThing, where negative reviews are welcome, but Pollyanna's Booklist is only for recommendations. Yes, this applies even if someone else recommends a book that you loathed. Violations of the Pollyanna spirit may result in mod warnings and eventual banning.
OMG this list is massive! Is there any way you can organize it?!
Certainly! This LibraryThing catalog is Pollyanna's Booklist (well, a small part of it so far...) in searchable database form. You can also sort it by title or author, or click on a username in the 'Tags' column to see all the books that person has recommended. Series books are also tagged with 'series' so you can click to see them all at once. The 'Comments' column links to the original recommendations back on Pollyanna's Booklist.
If you have a LibraryThing account, you are welcome to friend us (username: robinmckinleysblog) or add us to your Interesting Libraries. This will enable you to see which books from the list you already have, and when we add new books they will show up on your profile page. If you're not too familiar with LibraryThing, watch this subforum for a tutorial that I plan to make soon. Please PM me (Maren) with any LibraryThing-related questions you may have.
Do I need to check first to see if someone else has already recommended my favorite book?
Nope! Just go ahead and make your recommendations; if the same books have been mentioned previously, I will simply add your username to the 'Tags' column on LibraryThing and link to your comment. In fact, multiple recommendations for the same book are a good way for other readers to guess that this just might be something that really appeals to Robin McKinley fans.

I just tried making a low-sodium version of hot and sour soup, which is usually a clear dark brown and contains things like mushrooms, lily buds, and tofu.
This is creamy yellow and contains no mushrooms, lily buds, or tofu.
And y’know what? If you close your eyes, it’s like you’re eating hot and sour soup! Or something similar but much less salty, anyway. It actually has the right mouthfeel. And it’s hot and sour.
If you’re curious, here’s the recipe:
1 32-oz box of low-sodium chicken stock
1 egg (I used a duck egg.)
1 can Kame no salt added stir-fry vegetables
2 tbsp red pepper oil (Or maybe less. My mouth is burning. Then again, H&SS does that.)
2 tbsp chive vinegar
1 tbsp balsamic vinegar
½ tsp sugar
½ tsp crushed garlic
Pinch white pepper
1 Chinese takeout packet of soy sauce
Put the veggies, half the stock, the vinegar, garlic, sugar and pepper in the soup pot (or awesome multicooker device) to simmer. Put the egg, soy sauce, and oil in a stick blender carafe. Put the remaining stock in a measuring cup and microwave it until it’s hot.
Start stick-blending the egg mixture, and temper it by slowly drizzling in the hot stock. When it’s all blended and hot (and foamy), stir it in with the veggies. Let simmer for 20 minutes. Enjoy.

This was my dinner tonight. I wanted to cook, but didn’t want to battle storm-crazed crowds in the supermarket, so I used stuff on hand. It was good!
Snowstorm Soup
Ingredients:
3 tbsp olive oil
1 green bell pepper, chopped
Half of a large onion, chopped
3 small ribs of celery, “”””
Half a precooked smoked sausage link (approx. 3 oz), “”””
1 tsp minced garlic
1 can no-salt added diced tomatoes
1 jar roasted red peppers, drained
2 tomato-cans worth of water (I’d have used low-sodium chicken stock if I had it, but I didn’t.)
Several scoops of leftover cooked rice. (This was brown rice. Maybe 2 cups?)
1 tsp Penzey’s Arizona Dreaming spice (or more to taste)
Sautee the green pepper, onion, and celery in the olive oil. When they start to get soft, add the sausage + garlic. Let them cook until the veggies get softer. Add the tomatoes + peppers. Let the whole mess cook until you worry that it might burn. Add the water. When it’s starting to bubble again, add the rice + spice. Stir everything .together + let it simmer with the lid on until dinnertime.

A friend at work gave me some kohlrabi that were too big and tough for raw snacking, so here’s what I did with them. The onions needed to be cooked longer and I think it would be much better with some salt, which I left out for health reasons, but the basic idea worked.
Ingredients:
3 medium kohlrabi
1 sweet onion
1 bay leaf
Low-sodium chicken broth (I think other kinds would work too.)
Butter or oil for sautéing the onion
Approx 1 tsp minced garlic
Lemon pepper + salt to taste.
Peel + chop kohlrabi. Put in crock pot (Or pan- it might be quicker that way), add bay leaf, cover with broth, and cook until tender. Remove the bay leaf. Puree with a stick blender.
Peel, mince + sauté the onion. Add it to the soup.
Stir in the garlic + spices.
Enjoy!
ETA: I melted some smoked Gruyere cheese into it and added a splash of vinegar. Yum!

I like to cook-- quite a bit, actually-- and decided to post some of my own recipes or recipes I love here. Hopefully you will all be able to enjoy them.
A recipe I just came up with tonight is a really simple and quick dessert. I hope you enjoy it!
Fried Banana Sundae
*One-two servings
First:
A little less than 1 Tbs. Butter in a small frying pan
Add almost 2 Tsps. Vanilla in small frying pan.
Cut one banana into slices as thick or thin as desired.
Add banana to frying pan.
Lightly dust Cinnamon and Sugar over top of banana slices.
Let the bottom of the banana slices become golden brown and slightly crisp on bottom side then-- and I would use a tooth pick-- flip the slices over.
Dust Cinnamon and Sugar over the slices once more and allow the other side of the bananas to get crispy as well.
After the bananas are done, scoop them (and any extra sauce) into either a bowl or small plate to allow them to slightly cool.
Then add as much vanilla (or your choice of ice cream) to a bowl. Put the banana slices over the ice cream, add a little chocolate sauce, and you're done! A quick and easy treat!
I imagine you can add any other toppings to the sundae you would like, such as nuts, sprinkles, or cherries, and it would taste just as wonderful. these are just all the toppings I used.
Let me know how it goes for anyone else who tries it out!
