I think I gain more weight when I read McKinleys, personally. It's been months since I read Chalice and I am still being affected by Random Cravings for Honey, and Sunshine was much worse in that the food described was all kinds of pastries and sweets... Just thinking about Sunshine has made me hungry again...

Sunshine has the best descriptions of desserts I've ever read. I could happily live in a world in danger of being overrun with vampires if Sunshine's desserts were there, too.
Which makes me wonder - maybe all of those ditzy girls in horror movies aren't so ditzy. Maybe they're really in the dark alleys/vampires' castles because they're seeking dark chocolate...

Reading out loud, huh? This sounds interesting. I tend to skim sometimes too, but usually only on the first time through, because first time through is a "what's going to happen next?" read. Subsequent reads are for savoring...

I'm re-reading 'The Deed of Paksenarrion' by Elizabeth Moon, but this time I'm trying to read it out loud to myself to stop me skimming as much. I've never noticed before how much I tend to blur over the pronunciation of names and unusual words when I'm reading normally. For some I've a sort of mental sound which is actually impossible to pronounce when you try it.
Reading Sunshine tends to make me want to try baking, which isn't very good when it's only you to eat it before it goes stale/soft.

I know what you mean about names which you can't pronounce! There are some characters that my brain doesn't really give a name to, whenever I run across their name in the text it goes "You know, that girl with the A name? Long dark hair? Her.", etc. I think because I visualize So Much when I read, my characters just have to look distinct in my head. I discovered this when trying to discuss a book with my brother and he said the name of the character and I said "Who? Oh, I didn't realise she had a name." and he was very confused...

Remember the time McKillip came to another forum and when asked how to pronounce--oh darn, I can't find Riddlemaster--but Master Ohm's full name, Gwist something, and she said, "Just like it's spelled."

I know! I was like - are you serious? There are too many consonants together! Not possible!
That one my brain tried pronouncing, though - "Gwistle-histle-sholm". It took me forever to realize that Master Ohm was the same guy because my pronunciation had rearranged the letters at the end of his name...

I belong to two bookclubs, which have both co-incidentally had a theme of the lives of Muslim women this month. "Reading Lolita in Tehran" was a biography of a professor of English Literature living through the revolution in Tehran, and is structured around a bookgroup of former students that met in her home. It was fascinating reading, and made me realise how my impression of Iran is shaped in a monochromatic way by the media, without taking into account the nuances of a very complex society. The discussions of some of the great works of English literature in the context of a society in upheaval were really interesting, too.
And the second book was "Nine parts of desire" by Geraldine Brooks, one of my favourite writers. She was a newspaper correspondent to the Middle East, based in Egypt, and used the opportunity to really explore the lives of women in Islam. It is immensely readable and informative. It was uplifting, funny and joyous, and also very, very scary, particularly when you think that it's 12 year old now, and fundamentalism has moved even further afield.

I don't think I've read Nation yet, but I've really been enjoying the last few Discworld books. There seems to have been a more story-arc conscious shift starting around... Monstrous Regiment, I think. Characters are in the same place you left them from one book to the next and it feels like there's actually a coherent story instead of just a bunch of jokes. I -like- a bunch of jokes, but I'm more likely to re-read a story.

I finished Daughter of the Forest and liked it very much. Thanks for recommending it! It's getting late and I'm tired, so I'll post more tomorrow. But I'm getting ready to start on the next book.

Well then I won't tell you anything now, so as not to spoil the book. Except to say she reminded me of Mary Stewart in her use of detail, which I thought was very good.

I also really enjoyed this, took a while for my headspace to adjust to the fact it wasnt Discworld (and the story is a bit slow to get started) but it is a delightful little story, very Pratchett like in humour, and love the heroine's personality and internal discussions with the grandmothers.
Recommended - nice humourous standalone alternate history Victorian coming of age story.

I've just started The Masqueraders by Georgette Heyer(I needed a break from the paper a while ago so I went and read the first chapter), and it's marvelous! I love the writing style - it's like the best parts of G. K. Chesterton's and Robin McKinley's styles were thrown into a blender and came out as Georgette Heyer's Style, with a bit more fun Victorianesque language than you hear in Chesterton and a really fun POV(not quite third person, not quite first... ie, references to "my lady" and "mine host" in the prose descriptions). I missed the end of the first chapter and the beginning of the second, actually, (until I realised I was on page 17 and the chapter should have begun on 13) because I was having so much fun reading it.

I just finished reading Sunshine. Yes, I know, I'm a delinquent McKinley fan for not having read it sooner, but I don't do vampire-lit, so it took me a while to get my courage up. (Squee warning) After reading Sunshine, my main response is: wow, Robin can write! (My secondary response is "where's the companion recipe book?") There's a reason she's one of my heart-treasure authors, as opposed to one of the authors I enjoy reading regularly.
Other books I'm reading (or re-reading) at the moment: Sorcery and Cecelia, or The Enchanted Chocolate Pot, by Patricia C. Wrede and Caroline Stevermeyer (this is for a read-a-long on Ravelry), Throne of Jade by Naomi Novik (I hope this turns out less anti-China than it begins...), and I'm picking up Keith Donahue's The Stolen Child at the library today. Oh, I also just finished Peter Dickinson's The Tears of the Salamander.

Okay, so I totally gave up on getting into "Paul of Dune" by Brian Herbert. It just isn't "Dune." *sigh*
So I've moved on. I picked up "The One Marvelous Thing" by Rikki Ducornet on impulse after reading a review yesterday. It's mostly short, somewhat surreal vignettes, sprinkled with intriguing sketches and artwork. Enjoyable, so far, if a bit odd!
And I think I'm going to check out "Child of a Rainless Year" by Jane Lindskold from the library tonight, too. I just read a post about her work on tor.com, and it sounded intriguing and lovely.
Haven't finished "All the Windwracked Stars" yet, but I've loving it so far! I'm about half-way through, too, so unless anything unexpected happens, I think I'll be giving it a good review and then going on to explore more Elizabeth Bear books.

Shelley, in that case I vote Sunshine. You can always read Cast in Secret in a bit, it will still be there. Sometimes you just need a comfort book. Especially since you are still worrying over the decision, seems to me you could use Sunshine right now.

That's part of my problem, I do try to read multiple books at one time, and end up finishing none of them. So I have discovered that I do better one book at a time, which is, I think, Cast in Secret. Started it last night and it went really well. I have no idea what's happening as of yet, but I feel I will. And I just read Sunshine a couple of months ago (for, what, the 7th time?) so I'll get back to Sunshine when I'm ready.

It depends with me. A new book, especially by a favorite author, is going to grab my full attention and not let me read anything else until I finish it... and sometimes not even then, because then I have to dwell on it. A re-read, a comfortable old friend, is going to let me divert my attention and then I can pick up this or that or the other book. I keep spare paperback copies of such friends in the bathroom and car. But it's one measure of how well I like a book if I get too distracted on a first read. I've found that I will hardly ever re-read a book that got read in pieces the first time around. There've been a few exceptions, but not many.
