So today I am flying out to Phoenix for a wedding, and trying to decide whether to stick to my current reads, Age of Innocence and Tamar, or follow the advice of librarian Nancy Pearl and take Sunshine along.

A capital idea! After all, I will probably have at least an hour waiting at the gate, and then a 6 hour flight, and then time on the chartered bus from Phoenix to Buckeye, and then the whole thing in reverse...
I won't need more than 3 books, will I? Wink

Depends on how fast you read, really - I try to have at least two books plus my iPod for each travel day (and have NO idea what I'm going to do for my upcoming business trip to the Netherlands).

yeah, it's trips like that which make me consider getting one of those new electronic book readers...too bad they're so expensive.

Yes, exactly. To have hundreds and hundreds of my favorite books with me wherever I go-- marvelous. Having to pay for the device itself, as well as buying all the books again.. not so much. Not when I have college to pay for.
But the idea is brilliant.
Smile

EDIT: p.s. Have a safe flight/journey!

I keep eyeing those.... but similarly, I can't quite justify the initial cost, even if I could somehow not have to pay for all the books again. The e-ink screens are so nice though...

I too am still mulling around. I figure the cost will come down - it already has from the original prices, but they are still as expensive as a cheap laptop and only have one function - which is ridiculous as far as I am concerned.

Apropos reading and travelling...

My mother had gone to Norway and was on her way home, waiting for the train to take her to the airport. I'd given her "The Magicians of Caprona" to read. She lost all concept of where she was and did not notice that the train was about to leave; one of the train personnel asked her if she wasn't going on the train. "Oh, yes!" said my mother, in shock.

You know, this gives me a warm glow of satisfaction, a feeling that I have Perfomed My Duty as a Good Daughter... (Sigh of contentment)

Why, I feel all thin, sort of stretched, if you know what I mean, like butter that has been scraped over too much bread.

It's official! I now have a new guitar, that arrived at 3:35!

And she plays beautifully! And what a sound! And the action is good!

So I'm shutting up now!

(Will start Daughter of the Forest tonight.)

I am reading "Dragons of Autumn Twilight" by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. I've not read these authors before but it looks to be interesting reading for me. Fantasy is what I love to read and I love dragons, fairies, dwarves, etc.

Finished the Circle quartet by Tamora Pierce. I did enjoy it more than I remember the first time I tried. I also wonder if I managed to get through all four that first time, because there were a lot of nigglings that things were familiar. So I think I must have. But anyway. An enjoyable read. Smile And I think I will proceed to the Circle Opens set, and then I can tackle the much-recommended Will of the Empress!

Also finally nabbed myself a copy of Howl's Moving Castle. I've been meaning to get that for ages, and you all reminded me. And since I landed at a bookstore yesterday and had a coupon with me... Smile I also got Reader and Raelynx by Sharon Shinn to continue the Twelve Houses series. There's one more book already out, but it's still hardback and I want to keep my set in the same format (though I may try to find it in the library in the meantime... I miss my Waldenbooks library privileges). I think her Samaria series is enjoyable, too.

Has anyone read and/or heard of The Magicians and Mrs. Quent? I spotted in the bookstore and thought it sounded intriguing. And I just looked it up on amazon.com and had to laugh, because the part of the page that lists the books frequently bought together has Chalice and House of Many Ways as the other two!

I'm glad you enjoyed the Circle of Magic series. It's different than McKinley's other writing, and takes some getting used to. Good luck with Circle Opens Set.

I've purchased Magicians and Mrs. Quent and am about 1/4 way through it. I'm enjoying it, but it's a bit slower than other texts which grabbed my attention recently. The first page alone made me purchase the text; how can you not love a heroine who reads while she walks? Very Happy

I've been read a YA novel called Graceling. Has anyone read that? I know one of my authors recommended it on their blog, but I don't think it was Robin. Anyway, it's pretty good; interesting premise, the magic system is made up of individuals who are have a "grace" or ability to do something special, from fight to climb trees. The heroine does things Wink. I enjoyed the relationships. A pretty quick read so far, but good.

No, that was on Tamora Pierce's Dare to be Stupid blog, which apparently you frequent as well. I bought it too, and thought it was great. =)

Speaking of her (again), I've been sort of depressed recently, and I've decided to read all of her Tortall books straight through, since I haven't revisited any of the time after In the Hand of the Goddess to Trickster's Choice in about two years. Should be fun. (Although I loaned my boss's 12 year old daughter Alanna: the First Adventure, but I've read it so many times that I have it practically memorized, so it doesn't matter.) Plus, since I've just finished a reread of Sunshine and Rose Daughter, so if these combinations don't cheer me some, I don't know what will.

I have three books going...

Lately whenever someone gives me a book I tend to shelve it; I guess the idea is that I'll have a reliable stash of unread books in case of emergency...

I know what you mean about shelving them: a friend of mine lent me a book on Bruce Springsteen (who I LOVE and really want to learn more about; note also that it was lent to me) but I almost instantly set it in my ever-growing pile of Books to Someday Read. Gah. Who knows when I'll ever finish reading all the books in my room...

And I also can't help but read more than one book at once, too, and for almost the same reasons you cited--when one gets too hard to concentrate on (or too depressing; that happens to me a fair amount) I have a backup to keep me occupied until I think I can handle the one I had momentarily put down.

At the moment I'm reading five books. Before Midnight by Cameron Dokey,
Chalice by you-know-who, The Goose Girl by Shannon Hale, Zel by
Donna Jo Napoli and The Princess and The Hound by Matte Ivie Harrison.

So fare Chalice and Before Midnight are my favorites.

I'm not the only one who does that....interesting. I usually buy books and then they sit in piles littered around my room until I get around to them, which can be awhile.Smile Unless they're books I must read right away, Robin's books fall into that category, they lay there until it's the right time to read them.

I am also hampered reading by too many books going at once, frequently books get put aside because I pick an old friend and can't put it down...I always thought I was odd, I guess not. Very Happy

I was in the library on campus today when it suddenly struck me that surely they had some Georgette Heyers in stock. So I looked her up and sure enough they have three of her novels in the stacks on the fifth floor, so I checked out The Masqueraders. I don't know why, because I'm gonna be crazily busy up until graduation, but I now have it. Maybe to assist in my Epic Procrastination...

I'm listening to Poe's Children in the car...it's a collection of horror short stories edited by Peter Straub.

I'm about to start All the Windwracked Stars by Elizabeth Bear.

And I'm struggling through Paul of Dune by Brian "Not Quite as Good as Daddy" Herbert.

An Encyclopedia of Fairies, Katherine Briggs (you can never know too much about Bogles)

Throne of Jade, Naomi Novik (because I can't resist historical fiction involving the Napoleonic wars and dragons)

The Bell at Sealy Head, Patricia McKillip (admittedly because she's reliably good, but now also for the food descriptions)
