I picked up a new series by Elizabeth Bear the other day, which I've been enjoying immensely... they're the Chronicles of the Promethean Age. So far there's Blood and Iron, Whiskey and Water, and Ink and Steel

Just to let you know. Hell and Earth the closely knit sequel to Ink and Steel is already out. It came out as the semester started, so I'm still working my way through it. Hope you enjoy it.

Sometimes Bear is a little too detailed for my tastes, but her writing and characters compel me to read. Plus I can't resist the idea that Fairie Land exists somewhere...even if it's darker than my childhood impressions of the landscape.

Ironside by Holly Black came today!

But first I must finish Chalice. Things are getting--compelling!

I have a personal fondness for The Grey King, myself. I did a book report on it in fourth grade.

That was my favorite as well, and the first one I read from the series when I was in fifth grade.

Me too! My brother had already been reading the series, but I picked up The Grey King at random on my own and adored it

Another fan of The Grey King here. I was repulsed by the ending of the series and rarely reread the whole thing, but go back to The Grey King again and again.

At the moment I'm rereading Enchantress from the Stars (Sylvia Louise Engdahl) for the umpteenth time -- will probably finish tonight -- and have Aristotle's Children (Richard E. Rubenstein) for leisurely nonfiction.

Just thought I'd weigh in with my two cents here--I loved Over Sea, Under Stone, and read it nearly to death. (the book's death, not mine.) A few years after I got it, I got the rest of the series.... and while I liked Dark is Rising, I never read any of the rest of them more than once. Will just wasn't my cup of tea I guess. Smile But Over Sea is still one of my comfort reads and I pull it out from time to time even now.

Reading Alias by Brian Michael Bendis. It's a comic book/graphic novel that has nothing to do with the TV show of the same name. I quite like it (Jessica Jones is a great, layered character), aside from one rather odd dialogue tic Bendis is using: HOW do people speak in parenthesis?

Maybe it's sort of a stage whisper? An aside to someone? I'm not really sure how to speak in parentheticals...

I think I would read parenthesis in dialogue as an aside--not to the audience but to whomever the speaker is speaking. If you think about, we do this all the time in real speak.

Finished Chalice! Yum! Now what to read...

Really? I loved the ending. Silver on the Tree is my second favorite in the series. I thought the Lost Country was very compelling. And while it made me cry, I thought Bran's decision at the end of it all was very grown up...but then, Bran always was my favorite character in the books. (Yes, I know he came in at the very end, but still.)

Oh, and I just finished Chalice and it was wonderful! Yay!!!! (Although it made me really disappointed I hadn't brought honey for my morning toast to work.)

With Silver on the Tree, it was the blotting out of memories that ruined it for me. Not minor details from some peripheral character, which might be borderline ethical depending on the consequences, but to delete the entire content of the series from the minds of all protagonists but Will! It would be one thing if they were all given a choice, like John Rowlands, but they weren't. For me, that's unacceptable.

Bran had a choice as well: to stay with his (birth) father and remember everything or go back to the world and be a normal person.

You're right, though, the others sort of got hosed.

Yes, you're right about Bran, but I still cried when he offered the warestone to Jane. The whole concept bothers me. Intensely.

That was something that I wasn't old enough to be bothered by when I first read the books, I think, and now that I'm older my brain has taken to assuming that it's a situation where the memories are there, just kind of dormant--but they'll still be a part of who they are, and that they'll slowly resurface as they get older and wiser (and I always took Bran's giving the warestone to Jane as an indication that they might end up together, because that idea pleases me).

Of course, it's been a couple of years, and now I need to go reread them all with this in mind and see what I think....

I do some reading for my mother - on cassette; and I read parenthesis with a slightly lowered voice, but not a whisper; a little like thinking aloud? or like Shelley said, an aside? I haven't consciously thought about it.

And no, I don't like that everybody (except Will) forgets everything at the end of "Silver on the Tree" (loved that series, by the way) - but I don't know if my objections are ethical - I just never do like that; some Edith Nesbit-books end that way too. I think it's so boring and somehow mean to the characters - but perhaps that is an ethical objection?

And when it comes to books I'm an idefatigable match-maker - of course Bran and Jane will be together! Smile

See, now I have to go back through and reread them all, because I remember disliking Jane and thinking Bran could do far better (although this could stem from a childhood crush on a fictional character...) and I know I didn't mind the ending (other than, of course, the fact that it was now over and what was I supposed to read now?), but usually I hate when memories are wiped clean. Hell's Bells! To the bookcase, batman!

I've had the house to myself this weekend, and I've used it as an opportunity to find my kitchen and do a LOT of reading - mostly old friends. I picked up House of Many Ways from my library, along with Wrede's Enchanted Forest chronicles, De Lint's Little (Grrl) Lost, and Pierce's Melting Stones. All but the Pierce have been swiftly devoured. I've been portioning them out... a load of dishes, then I get to read a book. ^_^ All about the self-bribery here!

Aw, I loved Little (Grrl) Lost. Was Melting Stones good? It's the only one of Pierce's books I haven't picked up yet (mostly because I don't remember much about Evvy...).

Tomorrow starts my weekend and that sounds like what I'm going to be doing... bribing myself to do housework with books. I just had Impossible by Nancy Werlin and Graceling by Kristin Cashore show up courtesy of amazon.

Hmm. I'm thinking I should reread the Dark is Rising sequence. Some of them I've read multiple times and some only once. So I have no real opinion on several of them since I simply don't remember them.

The Grey King did make me want to go to Wales.

There must be something in the air or water! I've just had a Tamora Pierce reread fest, and also finished her new just-out book, Melting Stones (part of the Circle Opens series). I'm also re-reading Robin in preparation for 6th Nov (have fallen in love with Con all over again). Talking of vampires, someone gave me Stephanie Meyer's Twilight. Oh oh! I think Constantine may have a rival in the lovely Edward Cullen. I'm awaiting a Waterstones delivery tomorrow with the next three, and filling in time till then with an excellent fantasy collection called Dark Alchemy (Garth Nix, Neil Gaiman, Eoin Colfer et al). But I want to ask them Why No Robin?

Come into the Light! Read 'em at once and give yourself a treat! I have to say, Under Sea is my least favourite--something about the voice just grates on me, and it's all a bit Famous Five. But I adore Will and Bran, and spent many happy hours dribbling out of the corners of my mouth and trying to get to grips with Welsh pronunciation. I've always wanted to know which goddess (if any) she based The Lady on. And I agree that the ending of Silver on the Tree is a cop-out. However, I can't talk, really, since I chose to make a whole town forget at the end of my novel (but none of the main characters--they all remembered about the dragon thingy!).

After a fairly lengthy science fiction kick (C. J. Cherryh for the most part), a stretch spent re-reading older (comfort) books, and a divergence into the world of mystery authors (Kathy Reichs of Bones fame), I took three new (for me) books on vacation last week with kind of a fairy tale theme: Chalice, Spindle's End, and The Bell at Sealey Head.

And re: Chalice, by the way -- read it most of the way through in the car on the way up, finished it shortly after we arrived, re-read it immediately, and then turned around and read it a third time this past weekend after we got back. VERY nice.

I am tremendously comforted by the readers on this blog/forum. Because previous to my time here, I was the only person I knew who obsessively re-read the books she liked again and again and again. It was viewed upon by those who know me, yea, even my nearest and dearest, as something of an eccentricity, not to say oddity. Nice to know there is a comfortable subset of humanity with similar habits. And what a nice subset this is Smile

Last count I have read LOTR 26 times. And counting. There are certain books I read once a year, like The Blue Sword, and The Forgotten Beasts of Eld. Books that lift me up. I tend to shy away from rereading dark books that are dark for the hell of it. (Even though one of my novels is dark. Mea culpa.) I read my favorites until they fall apart. And then I buy new copies. But keep the old, because you just don't throw away a book, even if it IS falling apart.

Somehow I ended up with 3 Chalices. I ordered one, must have pre-ordered another one, but Amazon was so slow I went out and bought my own copy. (Well, F did. I was still down then.) So now I have three.

Anybody need a copy? I might as well give away at least one of these. PM me if you're interested.

Throwing away a good book (especially one that's been read till it falls apart) is like throwing away a friend. I've tried to explain this to my bf, who just shakes his head at me every time he looks at my bookshelves.

I think I have read The Masqueraders by Georgette Heyer over a hundred times. These Old Shades something similar. But I still have and read my original copies. I look at new ones and shudder away. The cover means something to me. The original cover is part of the entirety I fell in love with. I couldn't change it for a newer model. It would be a betrayal.

I re-read compulsively (and I'm compulsive about arranging my shelves, and it makes a big difference in my comfort level to have my books close by. I definitely feel more secure with my books where I can see them). Howl's Moving Castle is one of my big comfort books, and you know last year was rough, because I re-read it seven times. A part of me just needed to hide out in that world, so that the rest of me could continue to deal with this world without breaking down.
