I hope you know how much you matter, my dear! I'm very glad we could help you feel alive. Sometimes that's the most important thing in the world.

Thanks, Angel. I love the princess mouse. My dog was eyeing her so she's high up on a shelf.

Today I read a whole book! Now in the pre-leg days this would be no big deal but I have been too out of it to read. It was Valiant by Holly Black, and I really enjoyed it. It's an urban fantasy and I haven't read much of those--unless you count Laurell Hamelton, shame on me!--but as I said, I enjoyed it. No Mary Sues. Heh. My middle name is Sue.

I also saw the doc today and (drumroll) I am wearing my sock! The final stage, have to wear for a year pressure sock that will "remodel" the wound. No more weird dressings! It's tight, will take a while to get used to, but I can't believe I've come this far. The graft site is doing much better and has skin over about 2/3 of it now. Wheeeeeeeeee! Soon I won't have to wear a dressing there either.

Thanks again for all the goodies. I hear the chocolate call my name...

Now, now, no shame. I like her books too. You read what you read and enjoy what you enjoy. It's for others to have narrow minds and make stupid judgements. Smile Try Patricia Briggs and Ilona Andrews for a milder fix

Yoooohoooo! Yay! That's great! Much happiness. In Greek there's a saying for every occasion and for this: Me to kalo, na to bgaleis ki auto! (which means, in good time, may all go well and you'll get rid of this too!). And hey, there's a bunch of knitters here, I'm sure you can find somebody to knit you a decorative "oversock". You should supply measurements and we can have a competition Wink That way you can do skirts too, if you fancy. Or you can go the shalwar kameez way!

What are you doing up so late, Susan? Wait--you're in Athens. Duh. It's 2:30 a.m. here. And I can't sleep because the sock didn't quite fit and it tried to eat my foot. Will have to order a custom sock, no big. So for now I'm just cruising the net, trying to find awake people. And I found you! How nice.

A knitting contest would be grand...

On the other hand, 'The Book Thief' by Markus Zusak is terrific! ...It is quirky, sad, funny and empowering all at the same time. Highly recommended.

I agree!
And have you read his other book, ..., which is called I Am The Messenger?
I enjoyed it, and so did one of the children's librarians who I work with. But the other one really didn't like it, or at least thought it far inferior to The Book Thief. I'd be interested in your reaction!

Smile

I have tried and tried and TRIED to read The Book Thief and simply can't do it. ... I figure there are way too many books out there just waiting for me to read them, so I have to leave this one behind for now.

I haven't read anything else of Zusak's - now on my library list. I agree that life is too short to persevere with a book you can't engage with. There's lots of others out there.

Including, "Daylight" by Elizabeth Knox, the second book about vampires that I've ever read, the first being "Sunshine" of course. I saw Knox in a forum at the Writers' Festival a couple of years ago, and was very impressed. I've read a couple of her books now, but this one was fascinating, if a little bit undisciplined. Many layers of character and action, starting with the mystery of dead woman washed ashore in the Med, and following trails such as the childhood of a NZ search and rescue man, the story of a woman about to go up a level in canonization, a biographer and her subject, all set around the caves of south-east France. I found myself reading really quickly in order to find out WHAT HAPPENED!!

I finished Busman's Honeymoon yesterday and went and hunted down my copy of The Blue Sword, but I didn't actually start reading it then. But, now I know where it is...

I don't read the book for Luthe, though. Corlath on the other hand... Also, I tend to forget that Luthe makes an appearance in this one, because he's so very "Hero and the Crown"...

Despite being a NZer I had never heard of Elizabeth Knox until a few months ago when I bough The Invisible Road, which is an omnibus of her two books Dreamquake and Dream Hunter - which I absolutely ADORED, and I think might appeal to readers of Robin.

Thanks for the recommendation for Daylight, I will see if my library has it!

It is funny how you're on one side of the world, I'm on another, then there's others from New Zealand and Australia and a dozen other countries too. Should we ask Blogmom how many countries we're all from? And we all really love Robin McKinley's books.

I've never done socks, but there's always a first time and hey: Legwarmers - fashion is having an eighties moment, so there's every reason to wear them. Sorry about the circulation problem. Been there with compression bandages more than I care to think about and there are times you curse them, but hey: concentrate on improvement and custom fitting. I guess knitting competitions should be brought up in the fibrecrafters' thread.

I have a hard time writing about what I'm reading: one, because I read fast and I gulp books down so usually if I'm sitting here I'm not reading something - it's been read. two, I hate talking about what I read, I just love the experience of reading it. three I ration myself because I am an addict and if I let myself read as much as I wanted to, I never, ever would do anything else, and if I'm reading something I like I cannot put it down and everything else suffers. So I like to have a chunk of time to devour books (new books). I re-read favourites on an anything at hand basis. Too many of my favourite books are in boxes in the basement. The problem would be be mitigated if there weren't so many books that I simply refuse to be parted with. As I said, I have an addiction, and this one I'm not interested in curing.

Is there a "Make A Poll" function? Somebody could make a "Where are you from" one.

Yes, there is a poll function when you start a topic. You can experiment with it in Sandbox, or just plunge ahead in Talk! I believe it's set up to do multiple choice, so unless we add in every possibly country (good god) as a choice I'm not sure how well this would work as a poll question... but you could certainly do "US, UK, Canada, Australia, NZ, and then an "Other" choice for each major geographic area...

I was on another forum that had a McKinley thread, but this is much more intense. I've made friends now in England, Canada, NZ--all over the US--and I've even met one of those friends face to face (we cruised bookstores, of course). I find these forums invaluable. Look at me. I hurt myself and my friends have come out of everywhere to help me through it. And it's been hard. Robin was right to make this forum. We all met over a love for her books, and at heart here that's what it's about, but it's more than that. We have each other now, and that's worth more than I can say.

Feeling a little grateful for you all tonight. And you, Robin.

Just read Diana Wynne Jones' House of Many Ways, which [I didn't realize this when I checked it out of the library] is A SELF PROCLAIMED SEQUEL TO HOWL'S MOVING CASTLE.

How did I miss that there was a new Diana Wynne Jones out! And that is is a Howl sequel. I will have to go and chase it down immediately and then read it as soon as I have finished Chalice.

It is wonderful to see that all my favourite authors have been mentioned here (apart from Susan Cooper). I have just finished reading A Monstrous Regiment of Women by Laurie R. King. She has continued the Victorian world of Sherlock Holmes into the post Great War era and given him a female partner in detection.

I wonder what it says about Robin that the people who read her books are all such lovely people and bond easily on so many different things?

oh , I love the Sherlock series by Laurie King! I read them all after I was given the "Beekeepers' Apprentice" by a friend when I was recovering from my accident- they are wonderful! ! was not much of a mystery reader-with a few notable exceptions- but friends brought me BAGS of books to read during my recuperation and I loved this series.
Several years ago I was given Anne Perry's "The Face of a Stranger", the first in her Inspeector Monk series set in the later victorian period and I read several before I knew much about the author and then I watched the movie "Heavenly Bodies" which is an Australian or NZ film about her life, filmed by the director something Jackson who did the LOTR film. After that I could not read any of her books with having in the back of my mind that she was imprisoned for murder as a child(I know, yuck1)
but she is incredible at evoking Victorian england in all its gritty detail. Well, I did not mean to natter on and on but hey, its books...

Yes it is! Although my favourite book is actually the Dark is Rising. I re-read it every Christmas. The film was awful, luckily I had found out about the changes before I saw it a few months ago, so I knew what to expect and didn't find it as bad as it would have been unprepared.

I haven't read Anne Perry for years, liked the first few but never really got the urge to revisit them. I'd forgotten about Anne Perry's history.

Well, were all just well-read, that's all. And we like chocolate. And doughnuts. And horses. And dogs. And cats (though I'm allergic). We were meant to bond, yeah, that's it.

I finished another book! Did I already post this? It was Tithe, by Holly Black. Enjoyed it very much and want to meet Roiben.

I actually started reading Blue Sword this morning before my first class. So good! I love the Orange Juice scene and how Harry rationalizes being to the table first because she could be behaving much worse, like running off towards the mountains(foreshadowing, anyone?). I also got the opportunity to biblio-evangelize about Robin's books to a guy and girl in my class because they saw the title and asked me what it was about. They sounded interested and I'm very tempted to go find some spare copies of it to hand out... Unfortunately, this meant that in the half hour before class I only read 5 pages...

The Dark is Rising is my favourite of the sequence too. I only discovered the books a couple of years ago, which is appalling considering I live in the village where the Dark is Rising is set! ( and that was a real missed opportunity for the film makers, they could have used the actual setting! But then considering how they butchered the storyline I suppose that would've been the last thing on their minds. *rolls eyes*)

They certainly wouldn't have. I'm also living fairly nearby and I keep meaning to track down some of the places she talks about. It was great fun in Cornwall to see all the places that she described in Over Sea Under Stone and The Greenwitch and to work out where she got the basis for the ones that aren't real.

I love books that describe a place so well that when you visit, it already feels familiar.

I have a personal fondness for The Grey King, myself. I did a book report on it in fourth grade.

What am I reading right now? I'm partway through Bottomfeeder by Taras Grescoe, a nonfiction book about how consumer choices affect the fishing industry, partway through a book of C.J. Cherryh novellas, and working my way through The Hound of God by Judith Tarr. I've been going through Discworld books somewhat at random, re-reading a few per week. My weekend plans include re-reading Chalice, as well! (And no, I don't really have the time to do all of this reading.)

Let me know if Lord is any good, will you, Charis? I have it around here somewhere...

Dark Lord is definitely high on my list of Diana Wynne Jones.

I just finished The Book of Atrix Wolfe by Patricia McKillip which left me with that strange dreamy feeling that several of her books have. Lovely. (And I mean that with no sarcasm intended.)

I picked up a new series by Elizabeth Bear the other day, which I've been enjoying immensely... they're the Chronicles of the Promethean Age. So far there's Blood and Iron, Whiskey and Water, and Ink and Steel

That was my favorite as well, and the first one I read from the series when I was in fifth grade. I found Over Sea, Under Stone to be rather dull as a child, and I must admit I still haven't reread that one. And I agree, The Dark is Rising movie was simply appalling. A good friend and I had been so excited to see it, since we loved the book as kids (and still do) that we dragged a bunch of other people on opening day... our mistake.

I finally seem to be awake enough to read Chalice! I'm a little over halfway through.

The Book of Atrix Wolfe is one of my all time favorites. And it makes me hungry.

Me too! My brother had already been reading the series, but I picked up The Grey King at random on my own and adored it, and went back to the rest of the series later (and since the library inexplicably didn't have Over Sea, Under Stone, it was a long time before I read that one--which is definitely not as good as the others, although I still enjoy it). It was the start of my slight obsession with Wales....

Someday I would love to go on a Dark is Rising tour, and visit all of the places in the books! I was close to a couple of them a few years ago, but since I was on a coach for a week with a load of other students on a pre-scheduled route I couldn't go running off *sigh*

I'm really enjoying Dark Lord of Derkholm, and I cannot think why I never read it before, when I've owned it for at least seven years--all I can think of is that I first tried to read it during the move back to the states from Japan, which was a particularly rough transition. Horrible, horrible trip--and then I spent a bewildered, jet-lagged week at Reading Angel's house, and I think I did nothing but re-read The Blue Sword two or three times. I must have tried to read Dark Lord at the wrong time (maybe it was in the TLFs? before we left?) and never picked it up again.

Oooh! I've thought of doing a Dark is Rising tour myself! It will be a few years before I can afford it, though, the way plane fares are right now.

If you like Dark Lord, you should definitely find the sequel, Year of the Griffin. It's about Derk's daughter Elda.
