What are your 3 fave Robin books and Why? [message #358] Fri, 10 October 2008 00:17 Go to next message

My No 1 all time fave is The Blue Crown.I can't remember how old I was when I first read it (It was published when I was 12) but I guess maybe 14?

Anyway its my favourite Comfort book and top of my Desert Island list. I imagine I have read it at least 20 times, and probably more, and I love it more everytime I read it.

My No 2 - now it gets harder, but I have to say Beauty. I love the way Robin does her relationships with animals, particularly horses, it always rings true for me. And the magical helpers are just so delightful!

My No 3 - I think its likely to be 3rd Equal between Chalice and Spindles End - this may change but I have only read Chalice the once.

Again the delightful animal personalities. I like how Rosie is so very much her own person.

hrm... that's hard....

I'd have to say Blue Sword, Deerskin, aaaaand....the third is a tossup between Sunshine, Spindle's End, and Door in the Hedge. Really, though, I love pretty much everything. Most of my copies are worn, even on their second copies. They have a permanent place on my bookshelf/reading pile/whatever. ^^

1 and 2: HERO AND THE CROWN and THE BLUE SWORD. I'm not sure I can rank them one or two without wanting to flip-flop them every few minutes. I view them as a set, and they are most definitely comfort books. They're also the two books that led me to the fantasy genre. I tore through HERO and went straight on to SWORD. (And yes, I know I read them technically backwards, but they've always made more sense in the order I read them, because then I could go ah-hah! in SWORD when there was a glimpse of something I already knew from HERO. And I could feel all knowledgeable. And hey, when I first read them at age 11, I thought they were supposed to be read that way.)

Disclaimer: My copy of CHALICE just arrived, so I'm discounting that until it's read - I'm saving it for my vacation that starts next week. But I can't imagine anything - even one of Robin's own books - surpassing those two.

3: SUNSHINE. More comfort reading. SUNSHINE is such a different feeling book from the others, but it rings true and fun and in such a way to make me sink into the book and let my worries fade away. I'm not a big fan of first-person narrative - it usually throws me right out of a book - but here it worked for me. It's not Con that fascinates me (not generally into vampires), but Rae herself and the relationships she has with everyone else. It's a book I'll pick up and start pretty much anywhere I feel like flipping to.

Oh, and DEERSKIN is definitely #4, not far past SUNSHINE. *love*

Oh goodness...Definitely Sunshine would probably be my favorite. Finally a good vampire novel where the vampire's not the epitome of perfection and sex appeal and can actually be burned by sunlight! This is the book I turn to if I need something I know will be good. My comfort book. Plus who wouldn't want to eat Sunshine's big-as-you-head-cinnamon rolls?

Second would probably be Deerskin. For all that the beginning is exceptionally hard to read that's part of it's appeal. I will never forget the day I'd loaned it to a friend and when she gave it back she told me that she truly understood what Lissar had gone through. My heart broke right there. And for that I will always love that book.

My third one would probably be Rose Daughter. I loved Beauty but Rose Daughter had a more mature edge to it that I really enjoyed.

If the tattered state of the book is anything to go off of, my favs are

1 Sunshine. This poor book is falling apart... it's been camping 5 times, through tour trips, and so much more. I love it, and it shows.

2 Hero and the Crown. This I got as part of a boxed set with my very first paycheck, and it looks pitiously bedraggled next to the other two. (Not that I don't love the other two as well)

3 This probably is a tie that has to go to Deerskin and Rose Daughter. They are both beautiful lived-with books, and have had special places in my life.

This is all not counting Chalice, because I have been told I have to wait until Christmas for that. *sigh*

Deerskin - always number one for many reasons, not least Ash could have been modeled on my first sighthound - I think this has to be one of my favorite books of all time - tied in first place with only one of two others.

The Blue sword - I remember finding it in the libary and reading it three times in quick succession and then several times more before returning it at the end of the month. It was the first book that made my top ranked books....

Joining it when I got some birthday money (must have been 15 plus years ago) was the hero and the crown.... and now, I think Chalice is right up there with is.

1 Sunshine. This poor book is falling apart... it's been camping 5 times, through tour trips, and so much more. I love it, and it shows.

This also sums up the shape of my copy of Sunshine...my first copy of Sunshine. I ordered a friend visiting the UK to bring me back a version, some version, any version, on pain of death, and he did not disappoint. (That one has only been read once, since I don't want it to resemble my original copy.) I'm also stalking the local book/movie store for the release of the new edition.

So, Sunshine is by far my favorite of McKinley's books, as well as holding the impossible position (for an avid reader) of favorite book of all time. It is the book I only let myself read when I'm sick or depressed.

2 would be The Blue Sword. It spoke to me when I read it...tall girl, loves horses, doesn't fit in with her surroundings, unsettled...only Hari got to marry a hot king and ride a beautiful horse. (I'm still working on those...)

3 is tough..I've read so many of them, and none come near my love for Sunshine or The Blue Sword...I guess I'd say Deerskin. It intrigued me with it's darkness, as I had never read such a painful book before.

Oh, for me this is VERY difficult.

I'd Say The Blue Sword is #1 that's for certain - but afer that i vascillate based on my mood.

I think Perhaps what I read the most is Outlaws of Sherwood - in which I think Cecily really steals the story right out from Robin and Marian - I enjoy the interesting focus in the story - somehow, it's so rarely Marian or Robin who's point of view is told, it's the merry men (and women) and yet really stays very true and focused. ( I suspect this is a very rare point of view to tell from, I don't often read these and feel they are successful and focused.)

After that it alternates between Sunshine and Spindles End - those two are too close to tell.

Having read everyone else's answer, I hoped to be closer to a decision by now...

1 - Rose Daughter. It has to be, because Beauty and the Beast was always my favorite fairy tale (still is, really). I enjoyed Beauty, as well, but this one spoke to me more for some reason. And the ending is possibly the BEST ending to a Beauty and the Beast story EVER WRITTEN!

2-Next is a three-way tie: Blue Sword, Hero and the Crown, and Sunshine. It is impossible to put any one of these above the other.

3-I think it's Deerskin, though Spindle's End should be on this list somewhere. For that matter, so should Dragonhaven. Jake is just so wonderfully written. Oh gosh. Now I'm going to spend all day thinking about this....I love Outlaws too.

Gah! Why only three??

Sunshine is definitely my favorite - in fact, it's my favorite book period, right now. Sunshine is a great main character, the reluctant heroine who does what has to be done but is still terrified and disgusted and just wants to go home and curl up in bed (something I can relate to all too well). The vampires are...monsters, but they're not just monsters. They're a different species, a thing apart, they're not just humans with (evil) superpowers, like they are in so many books and movies and tv shows these days (not that I don't also like a lot of those books and movies and tv shows, too, don't get me wrong!). And I love all the description and information and all the little asides that make Sunshine's world seem so real (although, thank goodness it isn't).

After that...I can't possibly choose just two others. I love The Blue Sword, Hero and the Crown, Spindle's End, Beauty, and Deerskin, they are also on my mental list of favorite books. I really like Outlaws of Sherwood and A Knot in the Grain a lot. I liked Chalice very much too, but I've only read it once so far (as compared to the four, five, ten, twenty, whatever times I've read the others).

So far I have two copies each of Sunshine and The Blue Sword, and I need to get new copies of Hero and Deerskin (my originals are falling apart). Take from that what you will :)

Definitely Blue Sword.

I resemble the heroine: tall, not exactly beautiful, mostly a loner, gift for languages and animals. When Hari did wonderful things despite her character flaws, I felt there was hope for me, too.

Spindle's End is a running second, due to the names of the main characters. My first two daughters are Rose and Catriona.

The rest, Beauty, Hero, Rose Daughter, Chalice, Sunshine, Dragonhaven, etc, are a collective third. I like them all.

1) 3-way tie between Blue Sword, Spindle's End and Beauty
2) 2-way tie between Rose Daughter and Hero and the Crown.
3) 2-way tie between Deerskin and Sunshine

Haven't read Chalice yet - my daughter is on holiday in the USA and has bought me a copy, at my request, so am looking forward to reading it next week.

Oh! That's such a hard question! They're all so good...Hm...I probably love all of them equally, but if I had to make a list-

1- That would have to be Beauty. Comfort book.

2- Err...Spindle's End or Chalice.

3- Hero and the Crown & the Blue Sword.

I love them all, really. Sunshine definitely rocked my world too. (I haven't read Deerskin yet.)

I cannot rank them in order of preference (a very little bit like I can't say which of my daughters I like better), so I'll put them in the order I first read them:

Beauty -- A very satisfying story, that has stayed satisfying for many years now.

Blue Sword -- Who wouldn't want a wonderful chestnut horse like Tsornin? (Ok, aside from Robin herself, lol!) I think the way Robin builds the relationship between Harry & Corlath is wonderful, as well as how Harry learns to know and love the homeland she hadn't known she was missing.

Spindle's End -- I thoroughly enjoy the whole book, but I think it may have the very best first and last sentences of *any* book I've read (which puts it at the top of a physically unstackable pile).

One of the things I like so much about Robin's writing is that she captures life in such a wonderful way -- it's a capturing like a jewel captures light, not a capturing that cages or encloses it. For me, the details in her writing illuminate the realness of life, the soul-deep mattering of life. Every time I try to put this into words, I'm not quite satisified with how I can express it; but I'll hope that it makes some sense to others who love her writing too!

My first one is easy: Blue Sword. My first copy was purchased from a library book sale, but it was in fairly good condition. Twelve years later it's in about six or seven pieces and I had to buy a new copy. I feel like every time I read it I find something new.

Second: Sunshine. I love Sunshine as the reluctant heroine, and how real her world was made for us. I can see her sitting in a SOF office trying to not explain where she was. I really enjoyed the descriptions of her baking, since I love to bake. (and I want one of her cinnamon rolls as-big-as-your-head.)

Third: Rose Daughter. It kept me sane when I was stuck on a boat for six months. The descriptions of the castle and the forest leap off the page. Her dreams about her sisters gave it a delightful sense of longing, and I loved the way the cats played into everything.

**I haven't read Chalice yet, so this list may be amended soon.**

That's where I am. Deerskin is a particular favorite despite the disturbing subject matter because the sighthounds ring so true for me (and after reading the blog I understand why!), but the other two are comfort books.

1. No question on this one! Beauty is my absolute favorite book in the whole world. I know Robin hates to hear this since it was her first book, but tough cookies! Beauty and the Beast has always been my favorite fairytale, this was my first book of hers to read, and I really relate to this book. So, sorry Robin, but it's an awesome book!

2. Outlaws of Sherwood or Spindle's End tie for this spot. Outlaws was just such a unique telling and more believable than most. Spindle seemed to me like it could be Beauty's little sister book and I obviously am a sucker for retold fairytales.

3. Blue Sword I love for the world of Damar as well as the story. I also love the feeling that it gives that people from the "real" world can so easily end up in an even more fantastic place, even if it's just another country. I've always been drawn to other cultures and learning about them; I find myself friends with exchange students and immigrants all the time (in fact, my sister-in-law is from Japan).

#1 and #2 are hard to rank, as they're both among my all time favorite comfort books: Beauty and The Blue Sword. As I've mentioned before in the blog proper, in my world it takes several decades of rereading for a book to achieve true comfort status, so Robin shouldn't despair that I'm still praising her earliest works. I reach for Beauty when I'm especially in need of a volume in which even the traditional wicked stepsisters are anything but wicked. As for The Blue Sword -- I can't really put a finger on why I turn to it over and over, but I did become rather huffy when told by one of the people I lent my spare copy that it's awfully slow in the beginning. I love the beginning! Without such fabulous scene-setting as "So she was merely first to the breakfast table," it might have been relegated to the 'just another adventure novel' category, once female heroines became less extraordinary.

#3: Rose Daughter, at least for the next few milliseconds. I dither too much when forced to rank my reading.

#1.) Sunshine. When my college sweetheart and I were still at the university, he used to work the night shift at the library. It was wonderful because I would go there after rehearsal to do work and study until his shift was over. If I ever had a slow night I could go raid the stacks in search of a good book to pass the time. That's how I found Sunshine. I got drawn into the story almost immediately and I finished it before his shift was over, then bought it from the store a week later. I love everything about the story and the characters. And I love that my paperback copy is practically falling apart and yet I can still discover new things within it's pages.

#2.) Rose Daughter. Not only was this my first book by Robin, but this was the first book I ever read in the Young Adult section of my home town library.

#3.) Chalice. I loved it so much after my first reading that I ate bread and honey for breakfast every morning for two weeks to satisfy the craving.

Ooh. It's very hard to pick, of course!

I think my absolute favorite would have to be Spindle's End. It's based on my favorite fairy tale, but is such a completely original take on it. I love the settings and the characters, because they're so completely alive. I'm also seriously in love with Narl, who is probably one of my favorite heroes.

Number two, at the moment, is The Blue Sword, which was the first Robin book I read (from my middle school library, about a decade ago now!). I love the humor and the adventure and how vividly real the setting is. Harry is such a likable character, and very realistic - especially for fantasy heroines, who often fall victim to cliche. Corlath is also high on my list of favorite characters, of course. While I love The Hero & The Crown as well, I find Aerin and Tor and Luthe a little harder to relate to than Harry and Corlath.

And third is probably a tie between Rose Daughter and Beauty, both of them because they're such original takes on the story. I prefer certain aspects of each - I think Beauty's stay at the castle and growing relationship with the Beast are more effective in Beauty, but I love Beauty's sisters in Rose Daughter. I especially love the ending of Rose Daughter - I always feel cheated at the end of most "Beauty & the Beast" stories, when the Beast is suddenly replaced by some "handsome stranger," as I believe Beauty put it.

Sunshine and Outlaws of Sherwood are probably next on my list - it took me a while to warm up to Sunshine, because it's pretty different from the rest of Robin's work and because vampires aren't really my thing. Needless to say, it definitely grew on me.

I am not including Chalice just yet, because I've only read it once, and my favorites are judged largely by how obsessively I reread them. I don't think it'll ever beat my first two favorites, but it's climbing the list!

How am I supposed to pick just 3? I see we're all having this problem.

1. I have to give The Hero and the Crown the top spot simply because I've read it something like 25 or 30 times. I have whole sections of it memorized (unintentional). My original paperback copy, given to me in sixth grade (*mumble* years ago), is a sad pathetic thing, but one of my greatest treasures; I had to seek out a hardcover library-bound copy about ten years ago in order to support my rereading habit.

2. The Blue Sword is a very close second and, depending on my mood, sometimes Number One. I want my very own Corlath. (And I'm not afraid to admit it, so there! haha). I had to upgrade to hardcover on this one too, because I reread this just as often as I do Hero. They're my two greatest comfort reads. I think it's got a lot to do with identifying with Harry and Aerin - I don't fit in well as a girl - and with wanting to learn to be a champion and overcome things as they did. Good messages in both of these, and I'm super excited that my daughter (now 6) is finally reading and will shortly be old enough for me to read these to her.

(I confess to reading bits of them to her while she was just weeks old in the cradle....)

3. Sunshine. Oh, my world brightened the day I stumbled across this on the Barnes and Noble shelf. I had no idea Robin had written a lovely grownup vampire book! And there it was! I bought it and headed off to the coffeehouse, where I curled up on the couch with a cup of Sumatra and stayed pretty much the entire weekend, to the proprietor's dismay. I love Sunshine's reluctance to be what she must; and the fact that, like Aerin and Harry, she gets it done in spite of herself. I love that Con is confusing and rather unattractive and yet compelling all the same. The book feels like my life - nothing quite fits into one box, nothing seems to work out perfectly or be totally resolved, and because of it, it's better. Eh, if I could explain myself in an articulate way I'd be a writer, but I think you all know what I mean.

I feel bad about Deerskin. I think I would have LOVED it, had it not been what I was reading the week my dad died. As things stand, between the subject matter, which resonates, and the memories of that week, which it brings back -- I can't reread it, despite 14 years having gone by, and so I don't know if I like it or not.

*sigh* And it's the one with sighthounds in it, too. It's just not fair.

Editing to add: in re-reading my response as well as those of others... I think the other reason I rank Hero above Sword is because of Aerin facing Maur. Because she rides around that corner, that morning, knowing she will die - even more surely than Harry does when she faces the Northern army - and does it alone. And then when she fails to die immediately, and instead has to linger on and on and on - I'm being inarticulate again, sorry. And after all that she has to deal with family crap too? But her courage and her grim determination and her flat refusal to lose have been at the core of some very major fights in my own life. Aerin's battles seem (in a figurative way) to reflect a lot of what I've gone through.
Harry, on the other hand, gets to have the kind of adventure(s) I WANT to go through, complete with the ending I want. I'd much rather end up with Corlath than Tor, thankyouverymuch! (Except that... in real life, I got Tor Smile )

#1 Sunshine: Though it's funny, when I first started reading Sunshine I kept closing it to look at the cover: "Robin wrote this... yes, that's her name on the cover.. she really did write this" .. it was so different than any of her other books. But by the end I was hooked, and Sunshine shouldered it's way up.. it's my favorite all-time book, I think, not just my favorite Robin-book.

The rest is a muddle:
* Deerskin: the tragedy, the hope, I turn to this book whenever I feel like I'm being buried by something, or whenever I feel I need to renew my bond with my dog. Razz
* Dragonhaven: I've already reread this a good half-dozen times.
* Hero / Blue Sword: I also think of these as a set, and read my original paperback copies ragged.

Chalice will probably work its way into that pile as well...

Only three...how does one pick? Well, in no particular order, are my choices for the moment. Don't hold me to it.

Spindle's End. I found it spontaneously on vacation and associate memories of my first trip to DC with the purchase. I read the first chapter at the metro stop "Foggy Bottom." It was fate!

Hero and Blue Sword sustained my fantasies of horses and swords. Everything appealed, and still does.

Sunshine, I guess, will be my third. It came out the week my grandma was diagnosed with cancer and it provided the only escape. Such a wonderful comfort book, and vicarious calories, too!

It's still like picking out my favorite experience with the best chocolate ever. I left out Rose Daughter, my favorite Beauty and the Beast adaptation, and the wonderful voices of Deerskin, and Outlaws. Plus the newest additions to the family: Dragonhaven and Chalice. *sigh* I feel like adding to the list already!

I got my dad to read Dragonhaven this month. In his words, "stupid book," which translates to "I liked it so much, so I stayed up too late reading it, and now I'm tired." A high compliment from him Smile

Gah! Unfair question!

Um...The three that I re-read most often are probably Rose Daughter, Beauty, and Spindle's End--Spindle's is a big comfort read for me in particular, because if I could live in any fantasy country, it would be that one. Sometimes I just want to walk into the book and never come back Smile

But I also love Hero and the Crown and The Blue Sword.

And I adore Sunshine.

And I absolutely love Deerskin--but it's one of those books that I have to space out my re-reads. It's like Till We Have Faces--I adore it, but I can't bear to read it too often. I don't have the emotional stamina, I guess....

...yes, watch me totally ignore the "3" in this thread's title XD

Can I have 3 in each category? Because I find it difficult to compare Old McKinleys(pre-Sunshine) with the New McKinleys(Sunshine and post-Sunshine).

So, my 3 favourite New McKinleys would be Sunshine, Chalice and Dragonhaven. My 3 favourite Old McKinleys would probably be Beauty, Spindle's End and The Blue Sword. I say this because they are the ones I recall the most fondly at the moment while my bookshelves are not in view... if I had them all sitting before me I'm sure I'd be much harder pressed to choose...

My favorite books by Robin? Sigh, I really do not know if I can choose.
I put Hero and Blue Sword together as I consider them companion pieces and they were the first of Robin's books that I read so they have a special place, then
Beauty and Rose Daughter come next altho Spindle is bumping right up next to them- The thing about Spindle is the truely unique approach Robin takes to the fairy tale. She really turns the story on its head and I loved this approach.
Sunshine- well when I started reading it I kept thinking as someone else here said "this is a Robin McKinley book?"
I am really not into the vampire genre ( could not get into the Anne Rice Lestate books)or first person BUT I loved Sunshine - I loved Buffy the Vampire Killer and Angel (TV shows) also so go figure.
Deerskin-I read it a long time ago and since I will buuy anything with Robin's name on it I was expecting a fairy tale and went into shock at the beginning of the book-THEN the rest of the book was so wonderful. But I put this in the same category as I put "The Handmaid's Tale"- brilliant but troubling.
I have not yet read Chalice -I cannot find it at my local Barnes and Noble- is the only way to get a copy through Amazon?
ok, ok I could go and and on-asking some about their favorite book is very dangerous!

Go to the customer service desk in your B&N and ask them to order Chalice for you. That way, they will know people in your area want the book. (Check in the children's section, too. Foolish booksellers don't know where to shelve things.)

1. Sunshine. There is something so comforting about her grumpiness, and then add the baking...a protagonist after my own heart.
2. Deerskin. Just...beautiful. I humbly submit that Ash may be the best dog in fiction.
3. Ummm...this is a difficult toss up between The Blue Sword and Outlaws of Sherwood. The former is so comfortable to go back to time and again, while the latter consistently surprises me when I go back to it, as if I'd forgotten all the great things about it in the interim.

Yes, do! Speaking as both a former retailer and a former sales director--when they don't have something in stock, they got no way of knowing people want it if folks don't ask! Smile

Although I've enjoyed all of Robin's books, my favourites have always been the fairy tales. Beauty, Rose Daughter and Spindle's End, in no particular order. I've never read Deerskin and haven't got my hands on Chalice yet, so have to discount those two for the time being.

Rose Daughter - basically the best Beauty and the Beast re-telling ever. And there are a lot of them out there.
Hero and the Crown - the first McKinley book I ever read, it retains a special place in my heart.
Deerskin - even though it makes me cry, it's just such a beautiful book.

1. The Hero and the Crown. For Talat, Aerin and Tor, mostly in that order.

2. The Outlaws of Sherwood. I'm not entirely sure why. I think Robin as an ordinary, pessimistic and reluctant hero has something to do with it.

3. Sunshine. I would so love a Mel spin-off.

Ohm'gosh, difficult!

1. The Blue Sword. Comfort reading, probably, I first picked it up before starting high school--euck!--at the age of fourteen, and it made the transition a lot easier. I loved how real a character Harry was, how she didn't quite know what she was doing (unlike many fantasy heriones who are so alien to lost fourteen-year-old girls with their years of karate training and fancy swordplay) and how self-reliant she was. She was my best friend. (Yes, I was--am--a dork, okay? Very Happy)

2. The Outlaws of Sherwood. My first Mckinley book ever! Amazing. That's all that needs to be said.

3. Tie between Sunshine and Spindle's End.

Well, it's difficult to say, since ALL of her books are sitting on my shelf here in my tiny apartment when the rest of my books are in boxes in storage... but I suppose if I *had* to pick three...

1. The Blue Sword--it wasn't the first that I read, but it was the first that really pulled me in, and if I'm being honest, I still wish I could go to Damar.

2. Sunshine--I'm not a vampire person, for the most part. But I love this book. Love. Lots of love.

3. Either Dragonhaven, Spindles End, or Outlaws--it really depends on my mood... =)

I completely understand. I have the same thing with Dragonhaven, which I LOVED. So much.
But my grandad died the day I read it. And so I haven't been able to read it again since.
I will. Eventually. Because I know how much I loved it.
*sigh* indeed.

I suppose it just shows the power of books. Or something. That such an event and what we were reading at the time are so inextricably linked...

Oh goodness!! Is it possible to pick just three?

BEAUTY definitely. No question on that because it's the one that started it all for me.
SUNSHINE also speaks to me very strongly.
And then for a third, I just don't know. CHALICE is wonderful, but I also like all of the others too. And I never was good at making decisions....
