Robin, you know if I met you for real in real life I might be tempted to do the same…

But—true. Well done on the allowing-yourself-to-be "Authored" and squee-d over. But maybe Favorite Author/Famous Author shock can do that to a person. [the gibbering/squeeing, not the allowing thereof on your part.]
When I met J.K. Rowling… in fifth grade—my teacher bought me a ticket for my birthday. She was doing a booksigning in Greenwich, a few towns over, and we waited in line for an hour, probably… and I had a red dress on, so when I finally got up to the table and was there and she said something like “Supporting Gryffindor, then, are you?” and I seem to recall smiling and mumbling assent or something, but it is just this hazy memory, really, just of her there, on the other side of a table. Talking to me, about my dress! Noticing me!—and then it was over and I moved down the line and that was that.
And I KNEW that I was going to meet her. I can’t imagine if I had been just, oh, at a bellringing tower, say, and realized that that talented woman who had been ringing with me was also the amazing author of most of my favorite books. She must have, as you put it, gibbered a little.

Oh, what a lovely, happy happening!

Oh No. Hope all gets resolved tomorrow. The Computer Man cometh to repair all technologies? Fingers crossed.

But what a PERFECT thing to happen. Oh, YAY. Exuberance. ! I am just so happy for you [both, I suppose!]. Just wonderful.

Smile

Little does she realise she was risking Death by Hellgoddess.

Brava on laudable self-control Smile Especially since she's a strong-female-character-loving reader.

Unless, of course, someone rushes up to me on the street and says, You’re Robin McKinley! You write wonderful books with strong female characters! I’m a Famous Hollywood Producer! And I’m going to throw money at you till you shout stop, stop, I only need one castle in Scotland! § And I’m giving you complete artistic control of everything!

Hmm... I know you write fantasy, but this seems way out there. Dragons and pegasi I can swallow. A famous Hollywood producer giving anyone else artistic control? Very Happy

P.S. My spell-checker doesn't recognize "pegasi." It must be broken.

Oh I love this story! What a fabulous thing to happen. It's always nice when someone else Recognizes Your Genius. And I'll bet she was thrilled. I'd be stunned if someone I'd been hanging out with for however long turned out to be the author of some of my favorite books. I'd probably risk a hug and gibber, too.

What a good story, and what a happy experience for both of you! And I'll bet that woman's daughter will be thrilled, too.

unless you’re JK Rowling, Stephenie Meyer, or Dan Brown, who cares?

DAN BROWN?? Aaargh aaargh aaargh . . .

Don't forget to include the garden helpers to do the grunt work on the five acres. I say this as a result of going around my front garden and saying "Next week YOUR turn" as I inspect the latest crop of weeds.

I had forgotten the bibliophibians. Thank you for the reminder. I LOVE the bibliophibians.

What a neat day. BTW, you are a famous author. I had heard of you, and read your books long before anyone (except their nearest and dearest) had ever heard of J. K. Rowling, Stephanie Meyers or Dan Brown, none of whom write half as intelligently as you do.

I wish to go on record as not being against ALL hugging. Hellhounds. Husbands. The odd friend of thirty or forty years. (Very odd, in my case, yes, quite right.) And this was in fact a *happy* hug, a *THRILLED* hug--and she's not a stranger, she's someone I've known slightly for several years and who I'm happy to see in a bell tower. But as a writer of books that are--and are unashamedly MEANT to be--comfort reading, wet Saturday afternoon reading, (almost)-all-ages reading, girls-who-do-things-yes-we're-CAPABLE reading . . . I've suffered an awful lot of unwelcome PATRONISING hugs, and that has made my nasty personality several wolverine degrees sharper. This usually happens at *book conventions* too when I can't kill anyone.
I should do a blog post on What to Do When You Meet an Author Whose Work You Love. :)

I have the same trouble with my spell checker. Word is *such* an inferior product. I had to put it in the dictionary.

The sequel to DA VINCI is apparently about to come out. You can't go anywhere near any book outlet, virtual or three dimensional, without being bludgeoned by this fact. Sigh.

. . . I have those conversations with weeds too. And I can hear them laughing as I turn and walk away.

Robin, you do realize YOU are a strong female character who does stuff, right? (heavy emphasis on _character_ ... *g*). Seriously, her daughter will probably be thrilled that her mum met a real live author of some of her favorite books. I would!

And, as for book-buying fans, I am about to have to go and buy two new copies of Sunshine. One for me, since I despair of ever getting mine back from the book-borrowing-fiend, er, friend, I lent it to, and one for my sis-in-law. I'm hoping to elevate her taste in vampires from the Sookie Stackhouse stuff ... and maybe she'll pass it along to all her book-hungry girlfriends. Hey, maybe she'll love it so much I won't have to agonize over birthday and Christmas presents - until I run out of backlist titles!

it sounds so fantabulous, this random meeting of yours last night! how cool!

I fourth the knowing of you and your books way before J.K. Rowling and Dan Brown, etc. but I also have to get your books from abroad, because barring a second-hand bookstore or ten that I've been to that randomly happen to have a copy of any of your books (which I somehow feel compelled to buy, because obviously other people wouldn't know how to appreciate them as much as I would Wink. and then give them as presents to my friends or something if I don't own them allready) sadly I don't see them here...
Israel is limited in what books we get from abroad, which is sad becaue we're missing a lot of good things, but the other side of that coin is that I had no idea that there's a sequel to Da Vinci Code, lol. (not that I'm surprised or anything).

I hope the computer patch sticks, or alternately that Computer Men will fix your net problems forever!

I *sort of* realise I'm a strong female character who does stuff. When I cut this statement down into its component parts I think, okay, well, I'm not *weak*, but I think CRANKY is nearer the truth. And then I think, well, yes, I certainly do stuff, but the implication is doing stuff COMPETENTLY and that's a little more controversial. :) Bell ringing last night was a strong argument AGAINST.

Until you have queues of people wrapping round large city blocks for your signature, signing books is a PLEASURE. That has always seemed to me to be one of the disadvantages of really huge serious fame, that you lose the pleasure of autographing your books.

This makes me feel slightly less like an imbecile over my first meeting of Connie Willis. I just kind of blathered and told her how much I loved her books and then stood there sheepishly while she finished ordering her deli tray from me. I always felt like she probably walked away thinking, "I hate it when they do that." although that's not really her personality. Now I can think that maybe she enjoyed that silly fan girl bit, just a little.

I believe that castles in Scotland are cheap to buy and Very Expensive to run.

It's a whole lot easier meeting authors whose books you like than those whose books you haven't read/actively dislike. Authors are always pleased when you say "I really enjoy your books. [Insert suitable comment about what you particularly like, eg strong female characters, resemblance to the books of Alan Garner, Georgette Heyer, etc]." When I meet the other sort of author I have to keep biting my tongue, and utter meaningless chit chat about the weather, as I believe it's Very Rude to criticise an author's books to their face unless they have specifically asked you to.

I can't imagine that criticizing anyone's work to their face would ever NOT be rude, unless you're their boss/editor/supervisor/mother. Smile

First time I met Robin, I told her I liked her signing pen. She had a gorgeous fountain pen, knocked my socks off--I'm a bit of a pen geek. I think I'd planned to say something bland like hey, I like your books--and it came out "Whoa! That pen is AWESOME!" Smile

I should do a blog post on What to Do When You Meet an Author Whose Work You Love. Smile

This is my favourite, by John Scalzi. But then I like most things that John writes.

I can't believe that people give PATRONISING hugs to you at book conventions. I mean, really, who does that? Especially to someone you don't really know? Even if I met an author whose books I really didn't like, I'd be polite, at the very least.

Hmm- Yes, I've seen it. In fact, I've just joined my sis-in-law's group of girlfriends who watch it weekly. I'll try to stay Pollyanna....

They're based on the Sookie Stackhouse novels by Charlaine Harris. (They're light, and I finish them in two days usually, even with a 2 year old and full time job - so I'm rushing through, and not savoring - which is one of my criteria for judging a book.) The novels are sweeter and more innocent than the show - which a coworker of mine characterized as borderline soft-core porn. I missed most of the first season - and the heavy sex seems to have toned down some.... Some of the concepts in the books are interesting - the premise is that vampires have 'come out of the coffin' and are trying to mainstream (with all that entails - I'm not going to spoil it).

I do like the reluctant heroine - she does things instead of letting them happen, and she always follows her grandmother's advice - "Women are strong enough to bear whatever they have to." (paraphrasing).

It's odd that I've fallen for every ink-and-paper vampire main character I've run across - except for these. They strangely don't do anything for me. Maybe it's that I live in the south and a southern accent isn't my thing. Also, I personally am uncomfortable with the somewhat graphic sex in both the show and the books. Anybody else seen/read these? Opinions on the vampires?

*G* I just did something subversive at my local big-box-bookstore yesterday. They had a display labeled Vampires on a table on the central aisle - and it didn't have SUNSHINE. So I moved all the copies from the stacks. Smile

Hmm again - would the stunning popularity of the new HBO series be a clue to which novel the Famous Hollywood Types are after??
