This isn't so much a call for help but...

I've just seen that I seem to have "lost" 100 messages or so - before I had more than 400 messages to my name - now it's only 360-something... I haven't been keeping track so I don't know exactly when I was despoiled, but it happened to catch my eye just now... This makes me look like a sloth! (hides face in grief)

What happened?!? (wails)

The official answer is: no idea.

It's possible that some bad data in the database got removed or changed during a routine database consistency check.

Huh... I deleted some antique threads in Talk.... maybe that is what did it? (In which case we all just lost posts!)

I'd say that's probably what did it. I belong to another forum which gets pruned fairly regularly, and that always drops people's post counts.

And that's the simple explanation. Yup, that'll do it.

I had already tried your suggestion.
I just succeeded by using "dog dancing grease". Got it.
Thanks

Greetings;
I have had occasion to remove a couple of my messages and, failing a way to actually withdraw a message, I have accomplished this by editing it and replacing the entire message with something like "Message withdrawn". Is there a better way to do this (barring better self-editing before posting)?

If you don't have a delete button on that post (next to the reply button), you can PM and ask a mod to do it. I'm not aware of another way to delete.

On all posts I get:
Bottom left: Two buttons - profile & pm

On posts by others:
Bottom right: Two buttons - reply & quote

On my posts:
Bottom right: Three buttons - edit, reply & quote

I don't see a delete option anywhere.

I will stick with the current practice of removing the content of the post in a timely fashion. If I find it happening often enough to be embarrassing I may ask one of you to clean up the evidence.

I've a question about threads; the subject line - does it disappear after a while, or what? I thought that I had a subject line on my "Looking Forward To"-thread, but then when there wasn't any I was a bit perplexed, but thought that perhaps I'd made a mistake somehow and hadn't really added one. I've the memory of a goldfish, and while I thought I'd seen the subject line, I was by no means sure. So I was certain to check the subject line on my "Trips & Tips"-thread, and it was there, present and correct. And it's now gone. And my question is really - ???

The subject line should stay there. You can change it for your message if you want, but otherwise, nothing happens.

I just went through several of your recent posts. They all have subjects, even the trips and tips.

(I assume you're talking about the title line above the post? I didn't see anything else that might be subjecty.)

No, I meant the thread itself - not the specific posts. (Perhaps I should have started a new thread? Smile ) For instance, if I did, and called it

Threads

and then had a line under it saying perhaps

What happened?

I don't know what it is called, hence I called it a subject line, it may be incorrect, of course. Wait, I'll check.

EDIT: I looked and it was actually called Topic Description - sorry about that.

For instance, here on Forum Help there is a thread called:

What's a theme, and how do I get one?

And the topic description says::

Theme creation

It's that part that has disappeared. I'm just curious - I hope I've made myself clearer this time - sorry again for expressing myself poorly. Smile

Ahh, okay. I see what you mean. And you're right; I don't see that on the Trips and Tips post. Hmm.

I have no clue if they expire. I can't see why they would. I'll point Blogmom here.

Sooo, I talked to Blogmom. She's not sure where it went, either. They're supposed to be permanent. But nothing has shown up on the forum check-ups, so unless scores of them start disappearing, there's not a lot we can do at this point. If you notice that happening, definitely tell a mod. Otherwise...sorry. Maybe it will come back as mysteriously as it disappeared. :)

Well, I do believe it may have happened to other threads as well, but as they aren't mine I'm not quite sure - like I could have sworn the Twilight to Sunshine one had something about "my daughter"? It's not "a big deal" of course, really, I'm just curious... Smile

We tend to rely on the omniscient words of the Blogmom at times like these: "I would write it off as a Weirdness. Only when Weirdness becomes Badness do I begin to worry." Thus spake Blogmom. Smile
