Hi, builder, I said. Hi, sucker, he said.
Told you so.

but his suggestions ..... seem to be pretty good.
Yes. They do. The bill will be pretty good too. You will hold it in your hand and a little voice in the back of your head will say sardonically, "Gee, it only took five times longer to construct than originally estimated!"

I’m actually getting three cupboards out of this job
Excellent. Storage is always useful. You can never have enough cupboards. Or sheds. Very Happy

Worse yet is the fact that there is a radiator that makes my heart sing [sic].
Ahhh .... Very nice.... How many copies of Elementals: Fire can you pre-sell? *g* Haven't you learnt yet that those glossy magazines are a slippery slope directly to the abyss?? Throw them out before you are dooooooomed!

and milk a heifer calf
Is this a trick question? *looks suspicious*

From my unlikely experience at the cottage I can apparently squeeze a good thirty roses in a utility-room-sized space, and I do have some scruples left.
That's a relief!! (So when is the next rose sale? .....)

I want sparkly white with black and grey flecks
Ours is deep red. To match the red hardwood timber.... It's fantastic for pastry and bread dough. Very Happy

Of course that radiator makes your heart sing! Also, black radiators let the heat come through in a way that white or silver-painted one tend to reflect the heat back into the radiator. May you find a way to get your heart's desire so you don't go "Ugh" every time you see what is put in rather than going "AAHHHHhhh, yum, love it."

My tiny cooking surface is white Pentelic marble: the same stuff they built the Parthenon with. It is lovely. It is now impossible to find (they forbid any more quarrying). It is also a good 10 cm too low for my height. Great for pastry making and bread making or anything else where you want to lean into things, back-exhausting for everything else. The whole kitchen needs to be redone. But first we need to replace all our french windows which are rotting from too much sun exposure. And add cupboards. And bookcases. We are procrastinating. And whimpering along with you, Robin.

Re: Cupboards
You can never ever have enough - I love my cupboard under the stairs, holds a multitude of sins (and the hot water heater, christmas decorations and 9 boxes of tat that I really should sort through).

Re: Kitchen Benchtops
Try Silastone or Ecostone - Granite like but cheaper....

Re: Whole remodel
Its taken me nearly 4! years to convince SO to give up on his dream of doing the whole damn thing himself and just "GET SOMEONE IN!!!" He finally decided on plans (essentially rip everything that is not already ripped out out and start again, + big deck), the council objection period closed yesterday and he made it through the decorators without gibbering (too much). He is incapable of making descisions and I refuse as "ITS NOT MY HOUSE and therefore I dont have to live with it".

RE: Radiators
I'm in the processes of working out heating requirements, my heat pump aint healthy and my upstairs oil heater fried itself the other day. So I'm COLD and only going to get colder. That radiator is lovely (and Frelling EXPENSIVE). Cant you get a normal one and paint it????

Ok, I'll stop rambling and go back to this stupid thesis.

My condolences on your tribulations.

I decided on solid wood counter tops ... when anything nasty happens one can usually sand away the problem. Also Ikea sells them and they are even less expensive than laminate. And as for granite ... I would faint from sticker shock, I'm sure. I am also trying to be as green as possible and it seems to me that wood requires fewer resources to produce, ship, etc.

Balancing what I like the looks of, the price, and the green-ness of the option has made decision making a long process. Without the Internet I would have been lost. I have been nibbling away at this for 24 yrs. Just deciding what to do next has been fraught. Usually something leaking, rotting or otherwise failing has been the decider.

Luckily I have no problem with radiators ... there aren't any. And I love my pellet stove.
It has a glass door for watching the flames. Pellets are way less messy than wood, and you just tip 40 lb. in the hopper and it burns for at least 24 hr. without attention.

I also love having a heat source which one can sit right next to and be radiated at.

Have you tried recycled? and what's wrong with the old ones? anyway, good luck, and keep the chocolate handy.

Ah, I dream of a kitchen redo. Ours is 70s linoleum and formica. There's a bit of harvest gold twining across the white counter, and if you look carefully at the stove and oven, you can see that they were once harvest gold, too.

In one of those escalating "for want of a nail" things, we want to redo the kitchen, but we can't do that until we do the floor. I want to tile it. But the linoleum floor in the kitchen is continguous with that of the back hallway, the "dinette" area, the front hallway, and the entire sunroom in the back. Probably about half of our measly 1500 square feet is linoleum-covered.

And, to make it worse, the carpet (which we, and cats, have lived on for 10 years now) also needs to be taken out and replaced and I'd like to replace it with tile.

And all of these projects have been on hold because we had to: replace all the windows with hurricane-protective ones, replace our water heater, and then get ye olde solare pumpe (installation date: 1983) fixed when it froze. It hasn't frozen like that here in 15 years.

(Also, I've finally gotten myself all registered -- I was one of the LJ denizens, and have been following along. Chalice was truly, amazingly lovely -- thank you for an excellent read.)

We have the Ikea wooden counters - they are great on one counter but have deteriorated pretty badly on the other around the sink. We also have a carrara marble insert next to the sink which I love. I was told that marble would stain but it looks great.

We are going to redo the kitchen in the next year or so and I (currently) think that I will have something flat and black on on the perimeter counters, either honed granite or Richlite. The island is (currently) going to be white Corian so I can have a waterfall edge - going all the way to the floor.

Remember I’m supposed to be choosing radiators? So I’d been reading the Radiator Catalogue†

† It is amazing the things there are huge glossy catalogues for. Nearly half an inch thick of radiators with a few heated towel rails at the back. Including designer radiators that look like large funguses or terrible accidents that are happening right on your very own wall if you have waaaaay too much more cash than sense. Or taste. I wonder if there’s any money in radiator design? There’s obviously a niche going to waste here.

Really? A Radiator Catalogue? I can't help wondering, can Sponge Illustrated really be far away? (It was in an episode of Garfield. Smile )

Why, I feel all thin, sort of stretched, if you know what I mean, like butter that has been scraped over too much bread.

we’re already one-third over budget, and I’m even counting from the second estimate

And--you said "washroom"--if you haven't looked at the washroom fixture catalog yet, there will be more opportunities for budget overruns.

I had a 1930s brick cottage in Baltimore. Your engaging scrollwork radiator would have looked very nice in it, but mine were all plain. And the most appalling dustcatchers, too.

I want granite worktops–no, not the damn sparkly black ones that are apparently still all the rage: a rage I don’t get in the least as something to cook on: I want sparkly white with black and grey flecks–and I can’t afford them.

My problem with natural granite is that you have to seal it, and I believe renew the sealant periodically, or it will absorb spills. I also read somewhere that some granite outgasses radon, but I've not done any further research on that. My countertops are tile, which I like because they don't stain and will not burn if a hot pan is placed on them, but if I were doing the kitchen again I'd have either a marble or hardwood insert put in for working dough. And I agree with you about the color: light is the way to go.

So did you have a dizzying array of newel posts to choose from?

"partly because the nice plain inoffensive thing . . . doesn’t make my heart sing, you know?"

I totally sympathize! I held out for double sash "guillotine" windows that had to be shipped from the States for twice the price they go for in the States and probably twice the price that we could get French windows for. But despite the price, I'm glad that we bought them since we won't lose any space. (French windows, for those who don't know, open into the room, thus forbidding anything place on the window sill and/or in front of the window.) But now we are 10 000¤ short for the framing and roofing expenses. *sigh* I will probably end up going with the most inexpensive tile and countertops, though they don't make my heart sing either. For what it's worth, we just installed pine countertops in the house in Lille and they look quite good. We are 50, and we don't have any children, so we don't have to worry about what they will look like in 50 years since we won't be here to worry about it.

oooh the excitement of redoing your kitchen!!!! Im doing it on the cheap, am getting a corner pantry and some side cupboards put in one side of the kitchen, and getting matching doors and handles on the existing cupboards.

I am also painting the corner its going into white, and will paint the rest of the kitchen/lounge pale blue (similar to the colour of the cupboards)

The only way I could afford this, is because interest rates have dropped so low I can borrow the required money and still be paying less than what I was several months ago. I can only dream of winning Lotto or similar to be able to do a complete fixup (want to knock a wall out and make a walk in library/sitting room)

And there is a little left over to get wool insulation put into the ceiling and under floor.

And the cabinets get installed next Friday!!!

(Im feeling much better BTW, dr wrote a script for some electrolytes, and I think those with the pills and lots of fluids helped. I managed to eat solid food today Smile

As I was reading this, I kept thinking, "Gosh that Robin, getting so excited about radiators. She's so crazy."

Then I clicked on the link. Eh, a radiator.

Then I read the part where you said to enlarge. Oh.

Then I read the price. Oh... I'm not sure what the exchange rate is right now, but that's a lot even in American dollars. (Okay, I just checked my converter thing. And Oh yet again...)

Time to ask Merrilee to get more contracts for you? ;)

And now I'm terribly jealous of your radiator, even if you don't get it. My house had enormous black radiators in all the rooms (not the bathroom since there's no space, but one really *needs* it when coming out of the shower in the winter!), and they're just *hideous*. Well, we only have two now, one in the living room and in the utility...hallway...thing. (It's where we keep the front door no one uses, and the washer/dryer.) When Jeff got the house, he replaced most of the enormous ugly radiators with these little floorboard things -- you can see one in this photo behind baaaaaaby Kippy -- and I don't think they do very much in the way of heating. If we ever get the furnace fixed, I guess we'll see. :P

But that scrollwork radiator. Mmm. Yes, I can see why you'd get excited about that. I want one, too. (Oh man, I just checked the prices for the larger sizes. *shudder*)

The only way is to get someone to go through the catalogue and tear out all the ones outside your budget so you never get to see them. (Or go buy a lottery ticket and hope.)

I wonder what it is about cupboards, that most of us yearn for? Is it because things can be away out of sight/nominally tidy? I don't think one can ever, really, have too many of them. Mind you, going over to one of the new boilers, as you are doing, means not having a hot water tank in the airing cupboard - we've been thinking of doing the same thing but the slight warmth from that tank is so useful when one is carbon-averse to dryer machines! I suppose there will be less call for such a facility in Third House?

I, too, have yearned over some of the more expensive radiators. Our CH system pre-dates our buying this place - it probably pre-dates democracy and a few other little recent developments - so we're going to have to do something about it soon and I really yearn for one of those combination radiators/towel warmers in the bathroom. But the prices of some of them! Sheesh.

I suppose no-one has produced some artistic reproductions of sighthounds as radiators? Smile

You can get special radiator paint that doesn't have that problem.

We have a radiator that isn't quite as nice as that lovely dark scrollwork one, but very nearly - it is a genuine, original 1930s radiator! We could have had a more modern one put in, but we like it! And this winter we have actually been able to adjust it, as we had a modern valve put in, which is terrific. After all, it was only our 30th winter in the place....

Oh my. That is a VERY nice radiator. At that price, will it bring your slippers if the floor is still a bit chilly? Smile

I have to say that although granite countertops look very nice, they've always scared me. I'm just sure I'll drop something glass on it and the glass will shatter and kill everyone in a five foot radius. (Got a scar on the top of my foot from dropping a glass on some sort of stone tile floor, so it's really not as far-fetched as all that!)

Mr Nice Builder
Ah -- that reminds me of a question I've been meaning to ask someone on the East side of the Pond for ages: just how long has UK English been omitting the period for abbreviations like "Mr.", "Mrs.", "Dr.", "St.", etc.? I noticed it at some point this decade in books printed in Britain, but that doesn't mean it hasn't been going on a lot longer.

Quote:

there is a radiator that makes my heart sing ... Now look at the price.
I've always been a believer in waiting until I've saved up the money for what I REALLY want; otherwise, I'll always look at the substitute and think about what might have been. It's always been worth it. For example, we want the bathroom redone, and right now there is absolutely no way to take a nice comfortable bath. We are very serious about our deep-tub soaking baths. But no way are we going to start the job until we can afford it, so the baths will have to wait, and showers it is until then.

Quote:

This is also why the kitchen counters at the cottage are cracked and peeling and curling up at the corners. Because I want granite worktops–no, not the damn sparkly black ones that are apparently still all the rage: a rage I don’t get in the least as something to cook on: I want sparkly white with black and grey flecks–and I can’t afford them.
Yeah, I'm eager for the bathroom and my husband is eager for the kitchen. Again, waiting for the money. I happen to love black EVERYTHING, including black granite counters. I want them in the bathroom, with the chipped edges. For the kitchen -- we'll see what goes with the color scheme. Maybe dark red. I like dark colors. But it's worth the wait; a substitute just won't do.

I love it--well, I love it in a grim sort of way--the way almost everyone, once you get them talking, has Horrible House Remodel/Repair stories to tell. There's something Going Wrong with the kitchen linoleum at Peter's house; as I sit here at my laptop the chair rocks, because the linoleum is humping up right *here* . . .

OH GODS. Yes, of course granite outgasses radon; Maine is a solid chunk of granite and has appalling radon levels--except those of us with draughty old houses where the radon didn't stand a chance. Oh . . . FRELL. I will have to investigate this.

I don't like tile because of the GROUTING. The LAST thing I want to do is have to clean horizontal grouted tiles every day of my life. But I don't much like the various smooth plastic options either. Which leaves wood, which ALSO has to be sealed and costs too much . . .

Sigh. Yes, I'm--I guess--in the process of deciding which particular wildly over expensive fittings I really NEED to have my heart sing for, and which ones I can survive on functional. SIGH.

I suspect our granite-based area is so ancient it off-gassed a loooong time ago. Smile But I didn't realise that granite per se did off gas. That said - my mother had NO problems with it and she is very sensitive. We just did the whole "heat the house up and vent" a few times to give the process a speedy nudge.
Our timber bench tops are oiled with a natural oil of some description (can't recall right now) which was picked because of the off-gassing issue. But because it is oiled I won't work pastry etc on it. Maybe I am just being fussy Smile

Yes. I had decided (sort of decided) that I was going to go ahead and get ONE fancy scrollwork radiator for the sitting-room and then have normal plain ones for the rest of the house *as* I have to replace them (the old ones are still working, but the builder lugubriously tells me that a few of them will probably blow when the new boiler goes in . . . ). So I went round today to discuss this . . . and the builder told me brightly that I would need TWO for the sitting-room.

Yes, I long for a heated towel rail as well . . . sigh. I would be mourning my boiler-warm airing cupboard more if I hadn't discovered Heated Laundry Airers. Which Third House will have one of . . . eventually. And it DOES have an outdoor clothesline . . . including one UNDER the verandah roof. Yaay. :)

Oh... Yeah. That's...price per radiator. Ow. Ow ow ow. I was telling Jeff about them today - *so* pretty! - and he asked if that was for just one of them. I said I *think* so, but I've never bought radiators myself, so *maybe* it's for a set. (Obviously I didn't read the webpage very clearly. I looked at the pretty picture.)

There's one dashed fancy. :P

So have you decided whether you can get two? Or maybe hide the plain one somewhere out of sight?

I totally got it! My mom used to sing that song all the time when I was a kid. Her favorite verse was the "cherry pie" verse because she loves to bake cherry pies.

ARRRRRRRGH. Last time I answered this, the frelling forum frelling threw me off the internet. AGAIN.

I *said*, reality tends to intrude on one's fantasies now and then. I can't wait on radiators, because It All Started with the weight bearing attic floor, which I MUST have, only building regs won't allow a mere weight bearing attic floor, you have to have STAIRS and CLEARANCES which involve moving the ancient hot water tank, which won't move, which means a new boiler, which means a certain number of dead radiators, and they had to take one out already to pour the FOOTINGS for the WALLS bearing the attic floor, and . . .

A heifer is a cow who has not yet had a calf ... milking one would be impossible.

Our big annual event is the "Strolling of the Heifers" ... as opposed to the running of the bulls.

Re: heated towel rails. A clever plumber I know has routed the hot water for his bath through copper pipes on the wall which function as a heated towel rail, at least when one takes a hot bath or shower.

Re: Ikea (or other wooden) countertops and sinks ... right, wet wood does not hold up. I was told to oil both sides, with three coats of oil and sand between coats with 400 grit sandpaper ... and to do the sink hole a few extra times. And to re-oil regularly. we'll see if it works ...

Do you have places like Renovaters Supply in the UK? A local firm here deconstructs old buildings and recycles and resells all the bits they possibly can. It's still a bit pricy for the really beautiful things (like the bay window they removed in one piece including all the wood work, trim, etc.) .

It's probably too late for your builder, but I if I had a furnace, I would go for radiant floors (no radiators, just gently warm floors ... doubtless great for hellhounds). My dream is solar collectors attached to the piping for radiant heated flooring ... when I was a kid we had radiant heating in the floors and I've never forgotten it. The whole house was warm, no draft from hot air registers, no clanking, hissing radiators ...

I've heard it, too - "she's a young thing and cannot leave her mother" - but I can't remember where or when, and that's driving me insane!

French windows, for those who don't know, open into the room, thus forbidding anything place on the window sill and/or in front of the window.

This is very interesting. You probably know that French windows here open OUT. I was surprised to find them so common in newer construction when we moved here 16 years ago; possibly they make a tighter seal against winter weather than sash windows do. I don't think they'd be so popular if they opened into the room.
