Yeah ... I can imagine .... :S May as well give in and just enjoy the flower arbour you have created inadvertently. *g*

This may of course have given PEGASUS airs above its station.
Possibly because of its tendency to be airborne.....

And the rose hedge is putting out little green flowerbuds almost faster than I can break them off. Stop it you guys. Never mind the Aga, this is still February.
Sounds like they are sensing the warmth all the way over here..... :S

They have not bothered to think through the fact that if they, forty pounds, four legs and longer than they are high, slip and slither on sheets of glare ice, then a hundred and mumble mumble pounds of upright human on two legs is . . .

How PEGASUS feels about it does NOT necessarily say anything about what *I* feel about it. *Ow* tends to be what I feel about it.

YAAAAAYYYY!! Pegasus is off and galloping - have you grabbed the neck strap, Robin? Airs above it's station made me think of airs above the ground - I'm seeing you in coat tails, doing piaffe on an extremely shiny and smart Connie now Smile

(Hoping you're enjoying the ride with Pegasus and will soon be able to enjoy Connie's company again.

Very sensible to leave bell ringing, the roads are so treacherous when temperatures drop, and there'll be practice next week (sits twitching madly with withdrawal symptoms from Tuesday tower practice already cancelled and Thursday most likely to be.)
On a good note I was one of the few who made Monday night practice and got to play at ringing up and down in peal (not terribly well but great fun to try) and plain hunted successfully at last. Hurrah!

My sore throat and cough have made me spend most of today clutching a mug of hot honey water, so am starting Chalice again - thank you again for writing such delighting companionable comforting books. And do you need more virtual chocolate yet? Wink

Ah, Pegasus ... it sounds so intriguing ... and I have no idea what you may be up to.
Just as well, one wouldn't want to grow too impatient.

How about crampons for you in order to give the hellhounds a bit more of a challenge when they and the ice seen about to overwhelm you? I'm pretty sure I've seen them in most hiking gear shops in the UK.

Sometimes when the ice is really bad here I sort of skate on it, sliding my feet forward rather than risking having only one foot on the ground. I have also been known to equip myself with a ski pole, garden fork, or the like with which to impale the ice in hopes that three legs are better than two. Sadly I have no idea how you would manage hellhounds at the same time.

Oh, and there's the "scatter ashes or sand or kitty litter ahead" technique. I can see the boys with little canisters around their necks (like St. Bernards) except the cans are laying down a sprinkling of sand with every step.

With regard to the fruit trees ... Bob Flowerdew writes in one of his gardening books about having an "orchard house" to protect potted fruit trees given to too early flowering. Mine was not a book about growing fruit, but I understand that he does have a book out about growing fruit organically ... as a British gardener his advice would probably be practical. It may be out of print, but what are libraries for?

I dare say that by the time you read this the ice will have melted and seem nothing more than a bad dream.

Oh I am feeling your pain. A building inspector has (for no apparent reason) decided that our storage shed - which has been innocently sitting in the backyard since 1935 - needs to be inspected, and painted, and fixed, in 60 days. WTF?

Whereas here in Florida, the prospect of a hard freeze is apparently sending all the citrus growers into a panic that has even made the national news (online, at least). Our temperature (in the Panhandle, NW FL) is expected to go below 20 degrees F tonight. I brought in our pineapple plant and then had to cover it because all three cats decided to check it out. Our orchids have been living in our dining room year-round because otherwise I forget to water them). Our freeze is very dry, which means we also have fire weather warnings. How lovely.

It's slightly toastier in So Fla than in the Panhandle- 23 degrees! I have most of my plants wrapped up in an impromptu greenhouse created by throwing heavy plastic over the orchid hanging structure and I'm running two electric heaters in this tent. Still some plants left outside though as the pots are too big to move. I hope they survive or I will be feeling very very very very guilty.

You must have made a hit with the Story Council with your PEGASUS decision--hurray for you, and too bad you can't harness some of that momentum to your vehicle when it comes to your hill. We find that all-season radials are fine on all the roads here, but that's with all-wheel drive on my husband's car and my minivan. The full-size van, with rear-wheel drive, does not go up hills when it's slick so it gets a lot of garage time in the winter.

It sounds like you made a good decision about skipping bell practice, too; you don't want to end up in the ditch or the hedgerow. Untreated roads are so treacherous when they get into the melt/refreeze cycle. I hope you get out of the current weather pattern soon. We had another very cold day today, with wind, too, thanks very much, but tomorrow it's supposed to get ABOVE FREEZING, and the weather folks allege that we'll have several days of daytime temps in the thirties. The mind boggles. It's good timing if true, because we've just begun heeling in Teddy's obedience class and we need to be able to work outside (heeling in the living room is not exactly a challenge). And the road in front of my house might emerge from under the ice.

There is still no sign of our county council getting up off that beach in Bali and coming home to run a snowplough.

They must be vacationing with my township board; the lack of effective plowing is WHY there is an ice sheet in front of my house. The county and state roads are clear and dry.

You might as well just relax and enjoy your flowering trees and budding roses in the cottage. Move some plants so you can sit down, take a deep breath, think of SPRING. Smile

So presumably pale, crumbly and smelly? I hope not this time. The Pegasus mentions are tantalising and telling us about Pegasus getting airs above its station made me too think of airs above the ground and the potential that flying horses would have for avian dressage.

Ah, 4-wheel drive. I still have pleasant memories of climbing vertical glass mountains in my 4-wheel-drive Subaru. And amazing the townies.
