Ooohhhh..... *haz an envy*

Loved Stampede in 2010 (despite the electrical storms..!).
I'll admit to watching the parade from the couch. Razz

Glad you had a great time. Smile Smile

Yup, Sousaphones.

Which I'm sure were the source of the "Glubalubalum" in Margery Allingham's The Estate of the Beckoning Lady, my favorite of the Campion books because...well, the glubalubalum. A large unwieldy instrument that the player had to more or less inhabit and was supposedly faintly (?) obscene.

Appaloosas are beautiful!

Here's the Fred Small song, "Heart Of The Appaloosa", with lyrics. There're also some beautiful pictures.

This makes me think of PDQ Bach's "Pervertimento for Bagpipes, Bicycle, and Balloon", even though PDQ appears to have left out the habitable horn. Smile

As someone who's lived in Calgary for more than 20 years, please pass on my thanks to Cathy R. for her lovely profile of my fair city. The Calgary Stampede was an epic party this year, and I look forward to hearing to her further adventures and seeing her pictures. Hopefully she has an article on the interesting food available on the food grounds - mini doughnuts made fresh in front of you, deep-fried twinkies, and all sorts of meats on sticks!

Cheers,
Amanda

Thanks. "Epic party" sums it up well! And yes, the food does get a mention - not in entirely complimentary terms, I'm afraid! Wink Meats on sticks, pizza on sticks, fries on sticks, deep fried all sorts ...... The fresh icy lemonade was great, though!

This part of the Stampede sounds a lot like the food side of Midwestern U.S. state fairs, where every year seems to bring some new and heretofore unimagined food on a stick. I think the vendors are all trying to impress each other. Smile

Fried butter on a stick is the one that gets me every time. It sounds positively disgusting. Fried pickles, ok. Fried Snickers bars? Whatever. But fried *butter*? Are the vendors trying to make you keel over in a heart attack five steps from their stall?

Is the deep fried butter just butter, or it deep fried dough with butter already inside, for a hot buttered biscuit effect?

I admit to once trying a deep fried Snickers bar. It was covered with what appeared to be funnel cake batter for frying, and tasted divine, with the light, fluffy fried bread around melted chocolate/caramel/nut filling. Of course it was probably a million and seventy-two calories, but back then my weight wasn't responsive to such things.

Nothing as exciting as rodeo rides, though. Only sulky races.

I must admit, I was thinking the same thing, and when I read:

Fortunately for me, we also found probably the only healthy meal option on the whole site – fresh stirfried noodles and vegetables – along with a patch of shade in which to sit and eat it.

I realized it was just that I'd been going to fairs in the wrong country all along.

Do they even have funnel cakes in England? Or is clotted cream the payoff?

As regards the food, all I can say is: and I thought deep-fried Mars bars were weird.

Cathy, I'm just really impressed with the photos you've taken, especially the action rodeo shots, they're really good! Lovely and clear. The whole event sounds like a fab time, though.

I meant it literally - it was the only healthy thing we could find. And I agree re the idea of fried butter - it sounds positively disgusting. And deep fried Kool Aid!!!??? There are loads of YouTube videos demonstrating this, as well as many other extraordinary fried concoctions.

No, I'd never heard of funnel cakes before the Stampede. Or elephant ears. Are they made out of something similar to doughnut batter?

Funnel cakes, in my experience, are more like a pancake batter that may be slightly sweetened. I don't get to fairs a lot and don't eat much fair food when I do, but I admit to liking funnel cakes, even though they have no redeeming nutritional value. But then, alas, I like doughnuts too. Smile Elephant ears, in my experience, are coils of flaky pastry flavored with cinnamon and sugar. When they're done right, they're good, too.

It's a very good thing that I don't go to many fairs. Smile

I have long wanted to go to the Calgary Stampede, and these posts have only reinforced this desire. Someday...

Funnel cakes are good. Other things... not so sure, I have been very, very afraid.

In regards to Stampede food, I especially recommend the mini-doughnuts. They make them fresh in front of you, and that deep-fried sugary, cinnamonny goodness is all sorts of wonderful. It's just not Stampede without the doughnuts!

Cheers,
