I do wonder though... why he would worry about the armband. I know horses often worry about white things, because of the way they see. [ . . . ] Do dogs see like that too? Is that why he was so worried about the white armband?
|
I really have no idea, except that in class we don't wear armbands, so when we do the sit and down exercises, we just take the leads off and walk away without putting anything next to/behind the dogs. I think he'd have reacted the same way no matter what color it was, just because it was a new weird thing that he couldn't turn around and watch. Anyway, I now have a practice armband in my dog bag and use it when we train. I'm hoping he finds nothing remotely surprising at the next trial.

I wonder if this is another difference between dogs and cats? Any cat I know would have taken possession of the crate 0.17 seconds after seeing it and would have spent the next hour claiming it by sitting in it.
|
Well, lots of dogs would have done that, too. Ted's reaction to unknown objects is a Teddy thing, not a dog thing. Tasha, who knows she is queen of the world and therefore doesn't have to worry about much, was in it as soon as I unzipped the door.

Ah, see, my knowledge of dog behaviour is sadly lacking.

Unless you actually WANTED the cat to get in the crate, in which case the cat would vanish completely for hours on end....
Diane, if you've told us before I've forgotten--how did you fall in with Great Danes to begin with? Was it a concerted decision of "This is the breed for me!" at some point, or did you grow up with them, or what? I always wonder, with serious dog show folks, how they settled on working with one breed over another at the start of their careers...

Ah, the mystery of the "one legged dog" is resolved.
Great post; Hurrah on qualifying, and congrats to you both.

GUEEEEEEEEEEST POOOOOOOOOOOOST!!!!
Diane, you haven't written about this (yet), have you? I get people's stories muddled, and I seem to remember a forum conversation about how we end up with our critters, but I don't remember a BLOG POST about how Diane in MN fixated on Great Danes.

Okay, I was going to answer this, and then I read Robin's cry of GUEST POST!!! so I guess I'll do it long-form and write a guest post. I'll just say that falling in with Danes happened a long time before falling in with dog shows, and then start cranking away in Word . . .
