No pressure.

You know how there's Team Gale and Team Peeta for the HUNGER GAMES trilogy? And Jodi Meadows wants Team Sylph and Team Dragon for her INCARNATE trilogy?

I'm on Team Mongo.

I've always liked the term Ursula LeGuin used (in Always Coming Home) instead of pets: "commensals". Although if eating is not high on your dog's list of priorities, it might be wishful thinking. Smile

And reared up on his hind legs, took the handle in his mouth and pulled down. The door snicked open.

I had never taught him to do this.

My Dane Zinka learned to open doors by observation and experiment. She could hit the handle and push a hinged door open with her paw, and she could open a heavy sliding glass door by starting with a toe, then a nose, and then a shoulder. She learned how to open the latches on kennel doors when she stayed with our handler for a week or so. I was not thrilled that she figured these things out, especially when she demonstrated her abilities by exiting the vet's office by herself while I was putting someone else in the van. But it could have been worse. A friend's Giant Schnauzer has learned how to open their refrigerator door, and they have to keep it secured with bungee cords.

I hope Mongo exercises good sense and discretion about which doors to open. Smile

I'm going to take a moment to thank whatever deity might be listening that my Lucky hasn't learned to open doors (Or refrigerators). I already have enough trouble with her and trashcans. All I can envision is SO MUCH CHAOS.

On the subject of coughs and sore throats, you might try switching your water for chamomile tea, and adding "way too much honey". I've always thought honey was better then most cough syrups, and the chamomile can't hurt.

A couple of decades ago, when my husband was involved in some research on species of tortoise, I remember reading something in a paper he was using about the fact that the North American Gopherus Aggassizi was a commensal of one or two rattlesnake species. Brave tortoise! Smile

if I weren’t half thinking about the blog I might not find out after it’s too late that I’ve once again ordered enough plants for next season to fill all New Arcadia’s gardens

Do you get the email come-ons from 'Gardening Direct'? It's not that I don't like some of the varieties they sell as plug plants, but who on earth has room to plant 120 of anything in particular?! The prices are amazing but I'd feel like a murderer if I just threw two-thirds of the plantlets on to the compost heap. I suppose they do it reckoning that lots of neighbours/fellow gardeners will share. I suppose you wouldn't feel like moving 100 miles east...? Razz

Mongo is wonderful. I'm greatly looking forward to learning even more about him in due course.

I know you feel you are committed to writing a blog every night, but honestly, sometimes a sentence saying just: "Tired. Coughing. Writing." or whatever (okay, that's 3 one-word sentences, but you know what I mean!) will be enough to reassure us that you are alive and functional, if only just barely. Sleep - and SHADOWS - is more important than the blog (and you can always give us More Mongo, which can only be a Good Thing!).

Me, too. I second this. As much as I enjoy your blog, don't wear yourself out over it.

I agree (and also with VikkiK's excellent prescription of dark chocolate to ease your cough!)

(Oh, and I'm on Team Sylph for that book that's coming out at the end of January, whatever its name is.)
