Cheerios? Aren't ferrets, you know, carnivores?

You know, I saw this and thought of Jodi, too. Smile

Cats are carnivores too and I still can't keep mine out of a glass of orange juice, or from licking the outside of banana peels (which led to an entertaining conversation with an extremely puzzled vet tech).

I thought of Jodi too. Smile

ORANGE JUICE?! I'll not tell my cat... she'd be shocked. She severely disapproves of any such thing - in fact, she disapproves of us partaking of anything like that as well - she's quite obviously convinced that it's poisonous...

The oddest thing she's ever eaten - apart for having a mild liking for olives - is a piece of mushroom. We were having pizza, and there was nothing else on it that would have been of interest to her, so my husband offered her a piece of mushroom - which she ate. And then he gave her another one - and she ate that too. She has however shown no hankering after mushroom since - I suppose she was just in an experimental mood, and wanted to try something new...

Still, Shalea, what you said just goes towards confirming my theory - that cats just don't care. If they want to do a thing - they'll do it, no matter if they're the only cat to do such a thing in feline history... Smile

In college I had a tabby tom that loved green beans. Unfortunately, he was also allergic, so we couldn't feed them to him. We took him to the vets for some inner eyelid problems and found out that was the cause. Cleared right up after we stopped sharing!

There was an article in yesterday's 'The Scientist' on the genetic basis for cats' taste perception. Apparently the gene that encodes the sweetness receptor common to humans and many other mammals has been reduced to a pseudogene in felines, but cats do have the umami (glutamate) receptor that lets them sense mushroom flavor (and high protein food such as meat).

One of our cats likes peas. When she eats them, the other cat looks at her like she's nuts.

That just made me laugh so! I can just picture that "Are you insane?!"-look. Smile (I'd do the smiley with the teeth - only - sigh - I don't know how... )

But peas are such fun! You can knock them onto the floor and chase them around before consumption. At least that's what happens in my house.

Oh, and it might not be obvious if you didn't click the link I posted, but the article highlights why (some) cats crave expensive fungi. (Introductory cartoon features feline gourmet with mushroom on plate.)

You should hear my girl on the subject of showers. She still thinks that my husband and I are nuts on the subject and will often hang out just outside to make sure we make it out okay. If one of us is home while the other is in the shower, the "safe" individual will often be informed in no uncertain terms that they should *do something*.

I remembered reading something about cats not tasting "sweet" but it was actually just a mention in a fluff article.

Theoretically, cats don't have a sweet tooth.

However, my Nicki will eat chocolate. She will eat cookies. She will eat just about anything sweet if she gets the chance. If offered the choice of a sweet thing that she will eat and a nonsweet thing that she will eat (e.g., bread), she will typically eat the sweet thing first. I have heard many such tales.

Of course, Nicki will also eat broccoli if covered in Chinese food sauce (I forget what dish it was).

Camille is highly puzzled by all this, and the only people food she will actively seek out is lamb. She will eat chicken and egg and cheese if it is given to her, but she doesn't really care that much. She really doesn't get what's so interesting about cookies and chocolate and popcorn.

(yes, I know most of these things are bad for Nicki... most of what she has eaten has been my experiment, and she does not have active or frequent access to non-cat-food. Especially after the time I came home to find crumbs of a brand new packet of Thin Mint Girl Scout cookies scattered across the floor... shiny packaging increases the desirability of any chocolate or cookie relation (this has also been experimented with...))
