Links to Amuse and Divert [message #5895] Sun, 23 November 2008 05:32 Go to next message

In one of Robins blog posts she asks us to keep sending her links of amusement and distraction. I thought it might be fun if we had a thread to post them into, all in one place, for when we find something good or interesting.

I will start off with these links that I dont think anyone else has posted:

http://www.stonehengestones.com/cgi-bin/ston.cgi - jewelery made out of the same stone as the Stonehenge stones, from the only people who are licenced to source/supply it.

And for when you have had a bad Hell Hound day I offer this as light relief - A converstion between a dog with an absolute focus on eating root vegetables and the owner - and its utterly hilarous (contains some swearing)

http://littera-abactor.livejournal.com/2007/05/08/

http://www.dailycoyote.net/ - story about a woman who adopted a young orphaned coyote pup, and put the story online and got a fanclub Smile

http://smittenkitchen.com/ - my favourite cooking blog - awesome photos and the recipes I have tried are pretty good

I want to share the blog of Jennette Fulda (aka PastaQueen), who lost half her body weight and chronicled the journey online. I discovered her when she was featured in a piece in the New York Times.
NOTE: This blog is for people who are ok with becoming addicted and reading her entire archive of blog entries! It was very helpful for me when I had a temp job that had me in front of a computer all day with not enough work to keep me occupied.
Jennette is a web developer and therefore she has nifty little features on her blog such as flash animations of her progressive weight loss where you can spin her image around by hovering the cursor over the image.
Above all, she is funny and writes very well. She does not update as often as Robin does, so don't worry about committing to yet another online community.

Is she any relation to Nancy Fulda, of Anthology Builder?

(Which, come to think of it, is also a fun link, if anyone's interested: http://www.anthologybuilder.com/welcome.php )

Since there are so many cat-lovers here, I immediately thought of the webcomic Two Lumps: The first strip
I think this is the first strip I read of it, and is what got me reading more: Diagram of Cat Sulks

In the spirit of cat-caused laughter, when the Roomba came on the market there were two accounts that I read back to back and had me howling with so much laughter I was crying and shrieking and could barely breathe (and yes, that's a warning): Viva La Roombalución! by Sarah Bunting of Tomato Nation and Roombalicious! by Mel Hynes of Two Lumps.

Lianne! Posting the link to Two Lumps wasn't nice - I've spent hours in the past two days reading it! Ack! I don't have the time to spare but I can't seem to stop!

Very Happy Um, sorry? (Well, not really.)

I love Two Lumps. Last year I ordered the first collection book they published and gave it out to a bunch of people for Christmas. I'm doing the same thing this year (and this year it's on Amazon, which makes it even easier). The stack arrived last week. The house copy got my boyfriend hooked and now he's trying to find the spot where the book leaves off and the web-only strips continue.

OW. OW. OW. OW. My sides hurt, my eyes are leaking, I've had to blow my nose three times, and it took me several attempts to even FINISH the demonic squirrel story without hyperventilating.

It wins.

The Demonic Squirrel is highly amusing, but I personally find this one MUCH FUNNIER

http://littera-abactor.livejournal.com/2007/05/08/

I posted this in my original post and whenever I am having a bad day I dig it out and read it, and it never fails to help make me laugh

To entice you - here is the beginning:

Dog: I am starving.
Me: Actually, no. You aren't starving. You get two very good meals a day. And treats. And Best Beloved fed you extra food while I was gone.
Dog: STARVING.
Me: I saw you get fed not four hours ago! You are not starving.
Dog: Pity me, a sad and tragic creature, for I can barely walk, I am so starving. WOE.
Me: I am now ignoring you.
Dog: STARVING.
Dog: Did you hear me? I am starving.
Dog: Are you seriously ignoring me? Fine.

[There is a pause, during which the dog exits the room in a pointed manner.]

[From the kitchen, there comes a noise like someone is eating a baseball bat.]

Okay, this one is pretty quick: I came across it while looking up information about moose distribution for a project (for the record, the moose distribution seems pretty accurate; can't say anything for the grey areas, though):

And then there's Adopt an Escargot. This is a website for French teachers; the idea is that they have their students adopt a snail and then come online and watch the snail adventures. It has all sorts of truly hilarious links. The one downside is that it's almost entirely in French; however, since it's meant for French classes, you can still get a lot out of it with a minimum level of French.
