Another suggestion to raise money -- if you still own the e-rights to any of your earliest short stories, put them individually on Amazon for $2.99 and see how many of us will buy them.....<g>

Melissa--why Paypal averse? I think the reasoning here is that it's one of the easiest/safest ways to collect money across international borders, exchange rates are all built in...

Lots of attractive things in your auction list. I've never cared about collecting autographs, but regret now that I didn't get one at Balticon, lo those many *mumble* years ago.

Also, maybe offer a little bat doodle thank you, alternate to the bells doodle thank you? I'm kind of unreasonably fond of the bats (distance helps with this, I expect).

I didn't spend all my "mad money" at the American Library Association Annual Conference, so once things get going, I'll see what I can bid on, or simply donate (depends on how crazy bidding gets). I was on the Printz Committee the year that Ropemaker got the Printz Honor - I love that book ...

For those who don't know, the Printz Award is the teen equivalent of the Newbery Award and is administered by the Young Adult Library Services Association. I served on the 2002 committee.

Which we are going to be expected to sell tickets to. We’ve already had one pep talk, not to say exhortation, from Vicky about this.

Oh gods. I spent four years in high school having to sell things as part of fund drives, and made a solemn vow that I would NEVER SELL ANYTHING AGAIN. Which has meant, on more than one occasion, buying a lot of raffle tickets that I wasn't about to try to unload on my friends and acquaintances. You have my very sincere sympathy for this. Do you suppose Vicky would let you off if your auction brings in a pile of cash? Smile

After much back and forth, we came to the conclusion that PayPal in USD will be the sole payment method we can handle.

People who don't have/don't want a PayPal account are certainly welcome to enlist a PayPal-capable friend to pay on their behalf, so long as the necessary information is clearly communicated to one Blogmom when the time comes.

The auction increments will be in USD--but anyone can bid no matter what country you're in or what currency your Paypal account shows your balance in. You don't have to do any calculating to make a payment, Paypal does that for you. Smile

One of my fellow PRCers brought a copy of the kids story, My Father is in the Navy. I have to say, I bawled. In the middle of the book store. In front of (nearly) complete strangers. Kinda embarrassing Smile

But it was so true to life! I may have to bid on that one. Can't wait to see the offerings and the prices!

One can absolutely do this; PayPal offers to "verify" your account occasionally by linking to a bank account, but it's not pushy about it and is entirely functional with just a credit card.

I have a lot of respect for the man who runs the Cranky Customer site (I've gotten some of his other published works like This is True for a number of years). Having read through what he wrote (and also what the comments -- all 45 of them -- had to say, I decided that I didn't want them to have any access to my financial information. For those who don't have time (or desire) to read all of it, I will just summarize it by saying that they have little desire or interest in protecting their customers and have made some... very poor choices. (I will also add that I had a similar experience to what some of the people here mentioned; my only bad consequence thankfully was a $35 overdraft fee, but it could have been worse.)

Note: I've been trying to edit my link to make it not look like HTML text and it's not cooperating. Anyone have ideas?

Also: I've had The Flight of Dragons since it first came out. Folx, if you haven't seen or read it, it is a gorgeous book, well worth every penny the auction can raise. (Go ye and bid on it, in other words!)

What about just selling autographed copies of various books? I would gladly pay $10-$20 in addition to the price of the book, especially since it's for such a good cause. Of course, then who would ship them out? And who would order the necessary books? I suppose that would be a logistics nightmare.

But - *wistfully* - it would be nice to get a copy of Spindle's End with a signature. And maybe a doodle of a spider... or a fox..
