Oh but dear Black Bear, there are so many other things you can knit: scarves, sweaters, doilies... (I can imagine your face with the last one).

Hmm, yes, and antimacassars and snoods while I'm at it. Smile

Scarves are another favorite gift from my knitting friends, and several of them have mastered the Fingerless Glove of late. Sweaters I'm not touching, my mom does sweaters and it takes her a year to finish one of those beasts. No no, I shall stick to my painting and leatherworking and other various and sundry pursuits, and leave the knitting to y'all.

Hi all,

I'm ChrisW. I'm a biology professor and a professional belly dancer. Yes, my life is ruled by randomness. ;o)

I discovered Robin's books in grade school. I just introduced them to my mother last year. She's now hooked.

Cheers,
ChrisW

Hi everybody!
Julia here. Finally.
Let's see. What can I tell you all about myself?
I am nineteen. A sophomore in college. I have loved books and reading for as long as I can remember. And though I can't put an exact year to when I first began reading Robin's books, I know it was early middle school years at the very latest. Probably fifth grade. Maybe sixth.
I stumbled across the blog sometime in October of last year, and have been around ever since.
I smile a lot. And enjoy being happy. I wish that there were more hours in the day, and that I spent fewer hours on homework.
But whatever.
*waves madly at everyone, then falls down.*
[p.s. one more thing about me--I fall down A LOT.]
heehee.
Oh! And I have worked at the library in my town at home since September of my freshman year of high school. I love it there. And this past Saturday [the 11th] was 100 years to the day since Mark Twain [YES, MARK TWAIN] founded the library.
I think that it is pretty cool.
So yeah, that's me.
Hello, all!
Hugs and/or smiles all around.

Now I love knitting and I don't know how I was living without it (my Ravelry name is Charismitaine). I'm actually dying to learn to spin as well, but I have no drop spindle and no one to learn from, so that's on hold--I just look longingly at spinning websites for now.

Daah-link! I added you to my Rav friends - I'm unicornwarlord - and if you want to learn to spin...

I have some videos for you. Just call me your enabler. I can also show you a few inexpensive drop spindles and places to buy fiber, if you don't mind ordering online. Wink

Hurray! An enabler is just what I need--let's be best friends! XD

And now that I'm working, I'll finally be able to order some things, so the timing is perfect--I've been avoiding going to my Local Yarn Shop (although I found it online and mapped out the route Smile because I knew it would drive me crazy to set foot in a yarn store without money to spend.

I've friended you back on Ravelry--will you be my spinning sensei?

I know, I know.
But I went home on Wednesday night. Home, where the cable [and thus internet access] was down until late on Friday night, which is when I joined. Then I wasn't approved, so I couldn't post. And then I was at the library for the centennial celebration. In my 1908 dress. Which was exciting. But it is hard to get on the computer when I am at home...
And then Sunday my Grandma and my aunt came down from MA for my sister's birthday [which is today.] and we went apple picking. But then I had to get in the car to get back to school for a rehearsal that didn't get out till after midnight. And then I had papers to write.
...

see. I have an excuse.
Sort of.

Anyway. Thanks for the welcome!

Hi! I'm Maya. I live in Michigan. I am one of the minority of science-y people here; I have a degree in biology (hi ChrisW and ShadowKorin!) and am currently in medical school. I love blood and guts in real life but not so much in books-- they don't gross me out, but really, what's the point? If it's in a story I can't fix it. (I like fixing things.)

Okay, tangent done! Nothing else about me is really remarkable here: I'm a mild fiber-fan, in the forms of embroidery, sewing, and crochet, and have dabbled in various other crafts over the years. My mother is the real gardener in our family, but I try to help out when I can. I read more than is good for me and have vague ambitions at fiction-writing, but no time for either of those. (Any horror stories you have heard of medical school are TRUE.)

Actually, due to the diaspora of the Jews from the time of the Babylonian Captivity, and the fact that so many of them didn't live in Israel and couldn't speak or read Hebrew, the Old Testament WAS written in Greek before the time of Christ. It's called the Septuagint. What Susan from Athens calls Alexandrine Greek we in the church call koine. My husband is a pastor and had to learn Hebrew and koine in seminary. He does a lot of his own translating from the original texts when he prepares his sermons every week. He's very academically minded and probably does a lot more of that than most pastors in any denomination would (we're Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod).

Hi everyone!

Um, so. I'm kinda new here. I've only been stalking the blog for a few months (and have lacked the guts to say anything, because it's Robin Mckinley she replies to comments and is only my favorite author, and I couldn't think of anything clever enough beyond, "SQUEE, I LOVE YOUR BOOKS!")

So. Anyway. As for that, I've been a fan since I read The Outlaws of Sherwood when I was thirteen.

I'm currently a college sophmore, majoring in linguistics, and minoring in foreign language (French and Japanese.) I (obviously) love reading, particularly Robin Mckinley (um...duh?) Ayn Rand, Margaret Atwood, Jane Austen, Jeffery Euginides...okay, this is getting too long, yes? Anyway, other hobbies include swimming, kung fu, which I just started and suck at but love anyway, photography, sleeping, music, doing nothing, and most of all, the internet.

Nice to meet everyone! And I'm jealous of all the knitters out there, I've wanted to learn since forever.

Kaoru, I completely understand! If the blog hadn't started in Livejournal I'm not sure I would have ever had the courage to post/comment, but it was so easy to comment on Livejournal and once I had the courage I just kept commenting on stuff occasionally... Robin even quoted me once in the blog and for a whole day I was absolutely ecstatic. Surprisingly enough, you'll find that Robin is a Real Person(tm) and not just some High and Mighty Authoress...

Another Linguistics geek! Hurrah! I'm a senior(graduating in December) in "Linguistic Studies for International Education". Which is a mouthful and means that in addition to studying languages and linguistics I've also studied "Global Cultures"...

Edit: I've just started knitting a few weeks ago, thanks to Charismitaine... I've finished a Very Thin Scarf(which I called my Practice Scarf as it really was just an excuse to practice the knit stitch and the purl stitch...) and a dishcloth and am halfway through another dishcloth...

You can actually create a workable spindle with a knitting needle and a knob of clay or even a potato to use as a weight at the bottom! And there are plenty of videos on-line and elsewhere to show you how it's done.

One of these days I'll get my spinning-wheel out again....

Can she still be a yarn-virus for me if the pretty, pretty yarn and spindles are the only part of knitting she's swayed me toward? I've resisted going to stores or shows and collecting piles of samples and twists of my own solely from the memory of the vast collection of fabric my mother always had because she might someday "do something with it."

Otherwise, I would festoon my apartment with some of the gorgeous thread and yarn she's posted. And hang spindles on my Christmas tree!

Hi everyone.
I'm Vikki and my addiction to Robin's books started when I borrowed a copy of BEAUTY from the library and fell in love with it. (It's still my ultimate comfort read)
I collect handmade teddy bears, and have also recently succumbed to the knitting bug *brandishes half finished sock* I've also been accused of being slightly shutter happy with the camera at various gatherings of friends, and I love baking but don't get enough opportunity (although this is probably good for my waistline....)

When we first moved to Montana, we were warned about the severity of the winter over and over again. I would always reply, "But I'm a KNITTER. I have more hats, scarves, sweaters, socks and mittens than any non-knitter can comprehend. I like the cold. I LONG for the cold!"

This was always met with sheer disbelief.

"Well, you'd better get yourself a good parka before winter," the well-meaning person would reply, shaking a head over the folly of city people.

I did no such thing, but wore a bulky-weight [Elizabeth Zimmermann's Adult Surprise Jacket, for those in the know] woolen coat over my wool cardigan when I was outdoors and I was warm as toast!

I'd have been here sooner, but I was away from Friday to Sunday, and brought the migraine from hell home with me.
So it was a bit of a shock to find everything had changed when I trundled on to read Robin's blog earlier!! Rather fun and shiny though, and at least forums hold no particular terrors for me.

I collect handmade teddy bears, and have also recently succumbed to the knitting bug *brandishes half finished sock* I've also been accused of being slightly shutter happy with the camera at various gatherings of friends, and I love baking but don't get enough opportunity (although this is probably good for my waistline....)

Hi Vikki!

Can you knit teddy-bears, by the way? I am Going Wrong with mine - not knitting it, but sewing it together - and have got Very Frustrated!

*waves at Mrs R!*

I must admit I've never tried knitting teddy bears, although I DO have a kit to make one, lurking somewhere for when I get around to it (which will probably be never, knowing me!)
(I AM currently getting nagged by my teddy bears to knit socks FOR them though.....)

Don't worry about the dust bunnies, they're just here to guard the treasure.....

Heee I'd totally forgotten I had an account there >.>

Both of you added, my name's the same as it is here - Mori-neko.

You mean, there's a forum for knitters/yarn junkies? Share! Share! I wanna be there, too!

I know I have seen a knitted teddy bear, made with snuggly brown wool, but have no idea how one would knit him. Or anything else, for that matter....

I am Kit. I am one of those people who reads constantly and have done so ever since I learned how. My father handed me The Hobbit when I was about ten and I've been reading fantasy ever since. My first acquaintance with Robin's books (that somehow sounds over-familiar, but whatever) was somewhere around 1984. I was working part time for John Holt and he handed me a book and insisted I start reading NOW. He was right. He was given to both of those things.

I have five children and two grandchildren. I do educational consulting in an assemblage of ways that join, mostly, the themes of gifted kids and homeschooling. I'm working on a book of my own on the topic.

I knit. I sew. I do other fibery things. I cook, sometimes rather well and sometimes rather badly. I make attempts at gardening, most of which get promptly eaten by deer. And I do the faculty wife and political wife thing as needed by the sweetie.

And I would like to thank Robin for writing.

Hi, I'm Judith.

I've been reading Robin's books since I discovered "Beauty" as a grad student wandering around in the bookstore looking for good stuff to read.

I love dogs, horses, music, and various other things, and it's hard to get me to shut up when I get started talking on my favorite topics. Smile

I'm Dawn and I am a home school Mom of three in Colorado and an avid reader. I found Robin though a homeschool catalog - the authors of a certain curriculum were listing their favorite books and Robin's Beauty was on one of the lists. As a huge Beauty and the Beast fan, I immediately borrowed it from the library, read it and promptly went out and bought every one of her books I could find. I've read each of them numerous times and they have a treasured spot next to my Madeleine L'Engle collection.

God Bless,
Dawn
