Combined with mild panic at the thought of losing my cats. I seriously wish I could claim bereavement time at work in the unthinkable event that one dies...

I did take bereavement time when I lost my first pony. I was given her when I was ten years old, and kept her for over 20 years, riding her until 3 days before she died. She was pretty much my best friend by then - and I mean that in the best way.
I was working in a ward of depressed people and there was no way I could have been professional at that time, so I just told people at work that a very close long term friend had died, and took a week off... and I still miss her sooo much.

How much WALKING does a mini bull need????

Hahaha! I'm a mini bull virus! I caught it from Jodi lol!
As much or as little as you want! They'll be couch potatoes or run up Snowdonia/across the South Downs. Basically they just want to be with people, hanging out together (cue Hazel Smile)

I look at Hazel and her clan and know that it will (again) be heartbreak when it comes... but you also have more love, more good memories, more laughs, more life to have lived - how easy is it to go without a pet because losing the last one hurt? Living with pets - because it's worth it Smile

It's still an appalling system. You still miss your first horse, right? I think it's actually a pretty closely run thing: you have 'em because you can't live without 'em but you almost can't live with the grief when it comes. Arrrrgh, as I believe I just said.

Interesting that their anniversary's are so close together. I'll never change vets - mine had to put my mare down on his birthday. His wife said he cried.... And I can always remember when his birthday is now :/

I don't think we ever stop missing them. It amazes me, though, how we go on to love other animals knowing we will have to say goodbye to them as well.

When Orange Cat first showed up on my doorstep, one of the reasons I talked myself into taking him in was--and this seems awful to say--my other two are nearly the same in age, and getting up in years. I don't ever want to have a no-cat house again. I wanted a younger cat, not only to shake things up a bit for the older ones, but so I would have someone's fur to bawl into when the inevitable happens with Big Cat and Mean Cat. That's still a ways off, knock wood... but I think about it.

Not like I wouldn't have taken him anyway. Smile I tell him all the time that I'm glad he showed up and picked me...

Oh yes! I got my second pony when my first was 24, because I knew I would be so devastated when I lost my pony that I would never get another because she was so irreplaceable, and because I can't bond with a new pet until I heal somewhat from losing the previous pet...
and some people think that having more than one pet makes you love them all less - no! it just means there is fur to bawl into when the time comes...

I didn't think about it at the time Quinn showed up on my front porch, but now that I've had him a few years and my other two cats are both past the decade mark, I do think about it. I feel bad for him being so much younger than them, and so much more energetic and playful, but I'm glad he'll be with me for a long time. I'll need it.

My kitty Donovan is 10 now and I think about how hard it will be to lose him. He's been especially snuggly lately and that was starting to make me nervous, but yesterday he decided to act like a kitten again! He mewed at me until I came to be his "eating company" and then he even played chase* and did a little play batting at me. Smile

*I say "chase, chase, chase" and he bolts off but slows down really quick so I can do it again, his tail happily up in the air the whole time.

Yeah, it's something I think about, too. Our lady dog, Jasmine, died February of last year. I skipped classes that day and the next. She was 15... Bubba is 12 and he's an old-man-dog now, it seems like he has aged so much since Jazz died... We got them from the same family who were moving to an apartment and couldn't take their dogs with them, they had each other before we had them.

Toby is nearly 6, and I don't know what he's gonna do as the only dog in the house(whenever that happens), he's always had somedog to play with and run with and chew on the ears of...

Ok Southdowner, I wasn't going to say anything, but I think this is the fifth or sixth time I've come back to this page today JUST to look at the pictures of the puppies you put up. THEY ARE ADORABLE!!!!! (and because I'm a dog novice [we only had cats growing up because my mom said it was mean to have dogs in the city], what kind of dog are they?) so cute.........!!! (going back to ogle again......)

Oh, I feel so sad reading all these stories - and I am not even thinking about - I can't even say it! No, but why we keep loving animals? Because we can't help it. People I can keep at a distance - but against animals I have no defence whatsoever.

Why, I feel all thin, sort of stretched, if you know what I mean, like butter that has been scraped over too much bread.

YOu force yourself to FORGET what puppyhood is like. Smile I totally know what you're talking about but having *survived* puppyhood is the bond--you don't have to do anything else! Smile (Well, food, water, shelter, training . . . but all of that pales in comparison to PUPPYHOOD.)

Having a new puppy is like having a new baby - thankfully, though, the "must-be-aware-of-what-she's-doing-every-second" phase only lasts about six months, compared with about five years in humans!

Wish I could have a dog of my own, but I can't, so I have to be content with my parents' and siblings' dogs.

IT DOESN'T GET EASIER. YOU JUST HAVE MORE DEAD FRIENDS. I sometimes think I spend about half my LIFE in tears. Arrrrrgh.

Too true. But impossible to consider doing without those friendships.

True that.

What an adorable puppy, southdowner! All the pet pictures I have seen show beautiful animals and I am an animal lover. I have four cats (Kit, Aries, Xena and Nimue') and two dogs (Tommy, a miniature schnauzer 12 yr old and Bayla, a five year old golden retriever). I will be getting a toy rat terrier as soon as we move into our house and her name will be Andromeda, Andra for short. I soooooooooooo love animals of all kinds.

I lost a beloved dog, Midge, who was a cockapoo, to cancer years ago and I still think of her often. I also lost a cat, Merlin, to FIV and he will always be in my heart...they both will. I had to put them both to sleep..it was time..and I sobbed as I held them as they died.

Hey sis--sorry. I know you still miss Merlin (and always will). My thoughts are with you.

Two years later I still sometimes see a patch of white out of the corner of my eye and think it's my cat. We'd had him for 13 years when he died. It's worse because I can't have pets in the dorms and my parents haven't yet acquired any after moving cross-country. Sigh. And all the puppy pictures are NOT helping.

They are miniature bull terrorists - umm I mean terriers ;p Hazel is the big fat version - I think I put a picture of her on the pets thread... (don't encourage me, I have oodles of pics!)
