I wonder how long it will be before the media tries to bury him with "unfulfilled expectations that were never possible in the short term" ....... :S After all it's not like a change of government will create drastic change for months+.
I hope he has good discernment in the advisors he chooses ... (I dare say it won't involve a lot of "gardeners". Ahem.)

I saw someone complaining that though Obama is Christian, he didn't give profuse credit to God for his victory.
I'm just as glad. I thought that was an excellent step towards returning to a separated church and state, not the slowly merging thing we've had under Bush. Also, it's NOT thanks to God that he won, it's thanks to the American people who finally voted with some sense. I really don't want some mysterious God taking credit for my vote, or anyone else's, or for all the effort so many people put into campaigns and getting everyone they knew out to vote!

There has been much rejoicing on LJ for about 20 hours now - everyone's so happy! I, for one, am going to continue to pray (candles are dangerous over here, as we've discussed) for the country's leaders, and that President-Elect Obama will show discernment and wisdom in all his endeavors, and be able to get this country back on track. He's the man now, and it's a big job.
And unrelated to the new president news, I wish wish wish I lived in the UK tomorrow. I *completely* understand being kind with photos, but I hope there are lots of good ones to share with people trapped behind oceans. We have to enjoy the signing vicariously! (And I hope lots of hugs will be exchanged and someone will say every so often "this hug is from Jodi!" Because I'm sending lots of hugs across the water and I'll be very cross if they don't make it through customs!)

"“The road ahead will be long. Our climb will be steep. We may not get there in one year or even one term, but America — I have never been more hopeful than I am tonight that we will get there. I promise you — we as a people will get there . . .” "
I interpreted this as:
There will not be a chicken in every pot tomorrow, but give us some time, and there will be. In other words, it will take time to fix the financial crisis.
Oh, and I expect to be re-elected in 4 years.
I really think we can fix all this mess...the war(s), the finances, those darn terrorists. But everybody's going to have to pitch in...
And (this is me again) I think we was alluding to MLK, Jr. a bit.

****† How did she get elected governor? . . . shutting up now.
That's quite funny, because my husband and I were discussing the election today (well - of course!) and those were nearly precisely his words - how did she become governor?
As for expectations - the Swedish experts have been constantly coming back to the "oh, of course he can't fulfill all expectations and a lot of people will be disappointed" all the morning (since it was pretty much clear Obama won, in fact), but then I suppose that's because they are Swedish...Personally, I think that anybody who thinks one person can fix all the world's woes needs to grow up a little... And in the meanwhile - this is a historic moment, and why not enjoy it? I intend to.
And as for tom- er today, yay for nice photos! In which I won't be! (Well, if I was in them, they wouldn't be nice, now would they? ) Woohoo! The dedicated sour-grapist in me is clutching at any reason to be glad I won't be there... Sigh.
Anyway, have a splendid time, enjoy yourselves and tell us all about it! (Luckily any shade of green we turn, won't be photographed - so it won't matter if there is a striking resemblance to the wicked witch... )
Why, I feel all thin, sort of stretched, if you know what I mean, like butter that has been scraped over too much bread.

You expressed this so well for so many of us!

Agreed.
Oh, I really wish I could be there... but I am on the wrong side of the ocean. Oh, and there is that silly thing called classes- papers that I have to do, exams to take, ugh. No skipping out to fly to England for me! So please do take plenty of pictures [as long as they are approved by whoever] and share them with the rest of us! I too am sending lots of hugs across the water-- hope they get to you all for tomorrow evening!

Also sending best wishes and prayers for a successful, FUN London signing, for Robin and for all of us who will be there in attendance.
Also, I agree with sshunt's assessment of that quote from Obama's speech. He was warning people not to expect pie-in-the-sky, instantaneous good changes, that it would take time, and lots of slogging through stuff and uphill and all that.
BTW, Obama was a speaker at the American Library Association Annual Conference when it was in Chicago in 2005; I attended that ALA but not his speech (I don't do well in huge crowds, I tend to freak out in a sort of claustrophobic fit). I remember going to hear Studs Terkel (bless his soul), sitting way far back and off to the side for easy escape and nearly hyperventilating at the size of the crowd. Eesh. Anyway, American Libraries (the ALA official journal) is adapting that 2005 speech to be a cover story for a very near future upcoming issue.

The radio was carrying on about how Obama won by a mile but–once I’d googled a state-by-state map–it’s not my idea of a mile
As someone posted, it's a landslide in the electoral college, so much so that there would be no point in the Republicans trying to claim voter fraud in precinct X and suchlike challenges to the result. It will be an even bigger landslide if Missouri and North Carolina end up in the Dem column. And Obama has the popular vote majority, too.
How did she get elected governor? . . . shutting up now.
OK, Ted Stevens was convicted of 7 felonies, did not drop out of his reelection contest, and apparently will WIN in Alaska. What does this suggest about the electorate? (Apologies to any Alaskans who are not knee-jerk Republicans.)
Hellhounds are enough better today to be extremely resentful of the short mushy rations they’re on
I'm so glad that they have responded to the meds. I understand the part about withholding food to rest the gut after a bout of diarrhea, but I hate to do it, especially with a bad eater that is thinking seriously about food. I hope they continue to improve.
Hope Robin and all you fortunate UK blogfolk have cooperative weather, cooperative traffic, and a lovely time tonight. (SIGH.) Like Jodi, I send many virtual hugs. Also a scritch on the head for Hazel, who I'm sure will do a terrific job of representing the four-footed blog auxiliary.

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY! Sorry Alaska, we won't need to borrow Sarah Palin! DOUBLE YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!!!!
and good news on the hellhound digestion front - still keeping labrador paws & fingers crossed; and sympathy on the irony of not feeding dogs which want to eat.
Usually when I first wake up it’s, What planet am I on? You mean this is my body?* And then some bumping into things until I remember that I wear glasses and I wear them for a reason
This morning I woke up and found that a dog had slept on my glasses; my now ex-glasses. If I look even stranger than normal, it's not being able to focus on anything closer than ten feet - waah!

Hazel says "thanks" - well, she will when she stops leaning into my hand, eyes closed in bliss as I deliver said scritches...

No, indeed!
But I still can't find my copy of "Sherwood" (wails muchly) and have to go out to the theatre soon so can't take every book of the shelves to look for it..... oh well, ALL the other Robin books are in a tidy pile on my bed, waiting to go into a bag...
Will see many of you later, and Robin? I promise not to take any ghastly photos of you, and as long as nobody takes/posts any ghastly ones of me, I won't of them, either! I hate photos - there's this peculiar, bent-over, fat old lady who always seems to come between me and the camera lens, and I've no idea who she is....
And I know those who can't make it will be thinking of us!

I love my computer because my friends live in it!

For the signing,I am taking my camera - but promise I will only take "atmosphere" photos and nice pictures of people.
I haven't been to Murder One for sooo long (since they dropped sf and f) I had to look up where they are!
Louiz. (wonders if she'll recognise anyone - I'll be the one in a big black coat dropping things and with a jingly bracelet on, glasses and black hair doing a dandylion look due to amazing static. Unless I give in and pony tail it).

*grin*
You know, I'm kind of getting an inkling that you're just a wee bit happy about the election result, Robin?
Having said that, I did end up accidentally staying up til about quarter to five yesterday morning to find out the result... (getting up for work yesterday was fun!)
And yay! It's the sixth already! I'm rather excited about tonight. (and a bit scared too, although I keep telling myself that's daft, and I've done far scarier things, including going off to spend a weekend with 34 other women who I'd never met in real life, just on a forum similar to this - and that worked out just fine and resulted in some wonderful friendships.)
And I promise to be careful and considerate about where I point my camera - I'm another one who hates photos of me, although I love taking them. (I guess it's partly a defense too - if you're behind the camera, then you're not in the photos!!)
Anyway, see some of you later, and I wish EVERYONE could make it!
*goes off to hunt up books for signing*
Don't worry about the dust bunnies, they're just here to guard the treasure.....

Obama has been declared the winner in North Carolina as well, making his Electoral College Votes at 364 and McCain only has 162. They said 270 would win it, and 350 would be a landslide victory... There are still the 11 votes from Missouri to be decided also...
