Hoping the computer problems do get straightened out soon. I'd be totally bonkers by now if they were happening to me.

Just to let you know, my Klutz Klub membership card arrived in today's mail. <happy dance>

And, on one of my librarian listservs, we had a thread going on fairy tale retellings, and Beauty showed up a number of times on various people's lists of good ones. And one librarian from Texas said that Beauty is THE best fairy tale retelling EVER.

And another librarian posted to thank me for recommending Dragonhaven, which she loves.

I finally finished reading Chalice. Since I stretched it out over a couple of weeks, I will now have to go back and reread it. I love it, consider it one of my favorite books of 2008 (right now it's at the top of my list). And I have stated so publicly, in a discussion thread on "best of 2008" titles at a librarian listserv.

Anyway, if Robin gets a chance to read this, maybe all this librarian love for her books will cheer her up a little bit.

I know whereof you speak (the mice in the tulips) ... and last year planted tulips and lilies in a huge tree sized "pot", with the hardware cloth, and a small Alberta Spruce so that the monster pot wouldn't look quite so strange in the middle of the rose bed all winter.

Of course the eight feet of snow pretty well disguised the ugly pot ... and the tulips made it (cause the mice were all in the house).

Come summer I finally cleared out the last of the mice ... and then the rats moved in.

When the Rat Zapper (major expense, but it worked) had done away with all seven rats, I ripped up the kitchen and living room floor (it's one room), cleaned away some really disgusting messes, and began adding hardware cloth between the bottom of all the joists, followed by 5 -6 " of rodent unfriendly insulation and at last, a month later I am almost ready to screw down the plywood subfloor.

I think the ripping out the flooring and subfloor were the worst of the job, although making the floor level came a close second.

I think before I am done I may wrap the whole house in hardware cloth.

As I worked, I kept wondering why books about "women who do things" never seem to feature anyone slaying rats and using a reciprocating saw.

I guess like the Little Red Hen, I may have to do it myself ... tho it sounds kind of Terry Pratchet to me.

Last summer, after cleaning up mouse contamination in my dog room YET AGAIN, I bought some of those devices that broadcast ultrasonic blasts to freak out mice. The folks at the university extension had said that these things don't work for long, if at all, but I was tired of dealing with little corpses and subsequent disinfecting of rooms, and figured I'd try them anyway. Whether coincidence or not, last winter I had no mouse problems. We and the dogs are not affected at all. If you haven't tried them, it might be worth a shot. Smile

Poor Robin, I hope the Computer Men can figure out why your various software components are not playing nicely together. With luck they enjoy a challenge and will get to the bottom of things.

We go off daylight saving time tomorrow night. (Starting last year, they delayed the arrival of standard time so that Halloween would fall in daylight time. Those candy manufacturers must have a lot of clout.) Come Sunday, the sun will set before 5:00, yuck. Time to pay for our long summer days, I suppose.

"Dark by 5:30" forsooth! Wait until Christmas when it is dark by 4:00 pm, and really, walks have to be started by 3:30 or not at all. I hate this climate in winter..... and today is utterly horrible.

Longing and longing for Thursday!

Don't hate me--we're having lovely fall weather here. Oh course, it could change any minute. I'm getting out today to enjoy it. Time to get the brows done and it's Saturday so it's also time to get the hair done--part of me will regret when I can wash my own hair again! So love the pampering.

But first I have to change the bandages, which has become OH SO FUN. I want my sock.

My computer is maing funny noises, sort of a whistling noise, sometimes a "hmmmf" like a large dog was hummfing--I don't know what is wrong. And my emails don't download, so I have to go to the server to read them, which is a pain. I will have to hit the Apple store soon, I fear.

Foul, wasn't it! Had to go shopping in Canterbury today and came back extremely irritable from being rained on and blown at.

Around this time of year I think I need something like an advent calendar, but one that counts down to the shortest day. Once that's over, I don't mind the cold so long as I know it's getting lighter. Still, at least we've got Samhain over and done with today. Smile

'If only', eh, for both of us! Smile Did you have a reasonable amount of rain, this last winter?

The winter wasn't too bad for us. The spring has been awful though. Sad Pretty much nothing for the whole of spring.

We've had 30 celsius and 80% plus humidity for the past two days. This is not normal for November at all. We too could do with rain. We had four days of rain in September, but nothing all October, and this is our rainy season. I'll keep my fingers crossed for rain for us both, b_twin_1

Oh dear, that doesn't sound too good. Is the grass still growing enough to feed the stock, or do you need supplementary feeding as well? I know that can become really expensive!

OK, making a big effort now to will the wet weather systems in over the top of you and Susan... ::shutting eyes and concentrating fiercely::

The grass is in various stages of late maturity/death. I have quite a lot of native grasses that will green up again if we do get some rain in the next few weeks. (Maybe tonight? must be going to rain... we're shearing tomorrow!)

And then there will be a clear out ... less sheep .... Sad Hopefully that will delay hand feeding.

Being a city person, your comments make it so clear to me how dependent on the weather the everyday life of anyone living on the land is. I mean, I know theoretically that farmers worry about the weather, but I have to say (living slap bang in the middle of the city) I haven't had any actual contact with farmers and it shakes you up a bit. For me lack of rain is a worry for water supplies in general, but there are others here too who are much more directly affected. Should we do a rain dance of some kind? All jokes aside, will think precipitation down under...

If it's any consolation, thousands of our booking-flights-online customers have been fighting with IE recently, too. It's not just you: It's IE.

A month later? Gaaah. I had to go through a similar process (mold in the subfloor, not rats) and was only kitchenless for about two weeks, but even then was ready to kill someone if I couldn't just sit at my own dining room table and eat breakfast. How'd you manage for a whole month? Longer, I guess, since I note that you're "almost ready" to put the subfloor back.
