Is it illegal or somehow violating mod-ness to start taking bets on whether you end up with a kitten? I'd split my earnings with you, of course. An even 70/30. That's fair, right?

^^ Well. Maybe I took the phone number.+

+ Maybe I took the phone number, but I lost it.=

= Well. Maybe I didn’t lose it but it’s after midnight and I didn’t phone. . . .

Okay. Mhm. Good.

^ That was actually supposed to be a joke, about a prize copy of the original book in English, last night. Clearly authors should not make jokes about books.
No, I'd say not.

So, okay, I’m going to give away at least one copy of . . . mmrmph. I haven’t decided if I’m going to try to do something retroactively fiendish

or whether I’ll just put all the names of those of you who guessed right in a hat and . . . ask the hellkitten to choose one this weekend.

Yay. Except, by admitting I cheated, I think I disqualified myself.
Ah well.

I met Phineas as we were each getting out of our respective cars this afternoon. He can barely look at me lately without laughing. It’s a rather nefarious laugh. I can’t imagine why.

I think I might hazard a guess at to why... Smile Though what's going to happen when you also have your own ginger tom kitten to play with and meld into the hellhounds' view of the world?

I am bizarrely unimpaired by carrying all that backlist upstairs yesterday.^ If I didn’t have a witness I’d think I imagined it.

How about a nickname - Robin 'Sisyphus' McKinley? Smile

Not that I want to ruin everyone's fun including my own, but I've crashed up against what seems to me a fairly insurmountable obstacle: *I live in three different houses.* I can schlepp the hellhounds around--but cats are NOT good travellers.

That's the real reason I didn't make that phone call. Sad

How about a Third House cat? It could guard the backlist against any future possible vermin. You could go visit it, and it would have its own territory.

Sorry--I seem to be an enabler. Smile

*hugs*

If you had told me this in private, we could have worked out the whole betting thing to our advantage. You wouldn't have to stop at a kitten. You could have a tiger and a full time tiger trainer.

Cats are fine with this. Get two cats, and they'll amuse each other while you and the hellhounds are out. And they'll be thrilled when you come home to whichever home they reside at! Smile Smile

Depends on the cat.

I knew a cat that rode on his owner's shoulder on a motorcycle several times a week. I know a few cats that frequently go for walks on a harness. A couple that live in one place during the week and another on the weekend. I don't think I know of any that may live in up to three houses a day, but then again, I don't know many people who do that either. Smile

Well ... right now I'm sort of living at two houses, and every week or three the cats get carted from one to the other, where they seem to settle in just fine until we migrate back. This is made much easier by the fact that when two of them were tiny kittens I took them in their carrier for car rides every few days, and apparently it "took" well enough that I am not serenaded continuously for the 15 minutes between houses. An occasional mew - "Are we there yet!" - is about all. Of course, at least annually and occasionally more often, the ride ends at the vet, but fortunately the benign rides outnumber the malignant ones enough that they seem to forget.

That made me think of this:

http://www.cherryh.com/www/panel_room.htm

I'm referring, of course, to the "How to travel with cats"-bit - I discovered this far too late - I'm suspecting one must start when the cat is young? - but maybe someone may benefit from it. Anyway, I thought it was interesting.

Why, I feel all thin, sort of stretched, if you know what I mean, like butter that has been scraped over too much bread.
