"Space I have, I fill" - that could be my motto! Except worse - space we have, we fill; my husband actually thinks the problem could be solved by moving into a bigger flat! Hah!

A friend once told me that her mother's motto was - if you have sufficient storage space you won't be cluttered. Right, that's me sorted - I'm part exchanging for Buckingham Palace lol. I could enjoy expanding into every corner with books... Smile

Sounds good to me! Smile I usually joke and tell my husband we ought to get a derelict castle...why not dream big? 100 rooms or so, will do us nicely... Smile

(It's better in Swedish, "kråkslott" means "crow castle" and is a derelict castle and has a nice ring to it, I think!)

Why, I feel all thin, sort of stretched, if you know what I mean, like butter that has been scraped over too much bread.

"Crow castle" - I love it! It says what it means so poetically Smile

Maybe we could start a thread about nice local phrases and sayings since we have people from around the globe on this forum? (I've already discussed bumbag versus fanny pack!)

Good idea!

And I also like 'crowcastle'.

Great word! And translates well, too. Thanks L.R.K. And I like Southdowner's idea for a phrase list.

(Crash! Crash! CRASH! IE, are you listening? CRASH.) . . . Yes, I keep eyeing Buckingham Palace from a bookshelf standpoint myself. Hannah and I walked past it last weekend and I was thinking all over again, that's MILES of bookshelves. MILES. Give me a regiment of carpenters and . . .about twenty years. If I control myself. :)

I alway thought it was the wringing of the hands. Then more whimpering, a little whining, hear tearing, then the pass out after which you wake up in a nice white room with lots of flowers.

Actually, Buckingham Palace is not the solution to the storage problem. True story. Back in the late 1940's my godfather was made a knight by HRH Queen Elizabeth. Festivities included a reception or some such at the palace. Godfather was talking about art to Prince Phillip, and the subject of a fairly modern painting in the royal collection came up. Prince Phillip couldn't remember if and/or where it was hung. "That's the problem with living in a place like this, you never have anyplace to put anything." Godfather and wife went back to their small house much amused and much comforted, and Prince P's words have become family legend.

As for purses, I finally realized that they are black holes that will happily absorb as much as possible until your shoulders are permanently damaged. I now make do with an itsy, bitsy bag/wallet that holds money, credit cards, phone, small palm organizer, tiny pen, tiny swiss army knife, lip balm and NOTHING ELSE. Keys go on a carabiner on my belt or the bag strap. The bag goes as a waist pack (when dog walking) or shoulder bag (when pretending to be a sober matron) and I love it. Shoulders have finally stopped hurting. And when I need to carry more, it drops happily into a backpack.

That's suck a cute story (it was probably in the early fifties though, given that she didn't ascend to the throne until 1952 and was crowned in 1953 Smile ) I remember reading an article about John Pawson, who had just designed this truly fabulous minimalist house for his family with gorgeous features and tons of those wardrobes that are built in with no handles and all the surfaces were empty and looked calm and wonderful. As a sidebar they interviewed his wife, who complained it took him forever to build because he had to design everything and that because everything was always shoved inside a cupboard, the cupboards were madly disorganised and she could never find anything! So house envy can dissipate: give me my piles, where at least I can find things. (A few extra bookcases would be nice ....)
