Is anyone else going to be at AussieCon IV early next month? Would you be interested in a SUNSHINED-inspired catch up at another one of Melbourne's fabulous bakeries?

I totally am! Getting there on the 1st and leaving on the 8th, with the 7th set aside for a photography trip to the Zoo and hopefully some shopping (I need swing shoes and the nearest place to get them is Melbourne!)

Hotel is in town, just off Collins St, so quite central. I have been advised that I *have* to go to Kokoblack, so that is on my schedule - would that be a good place to meet? I see there is one down the other end of Collins st from where I am staying LOL

Oh, yes. You should certainly not miss Koko Black.

I'm not sure they do reservations, but I'll check. Also, the menu at Koko Black is a little limited for anyone who doesn't count chocolate as a major food group. Maybe we'll have TWO catch ups... I mean, we're going to be there all week. Very Happy

KokoBlack definately does reservations.

I suggest that the couches at the top of the stairs should be SPECIFICALLY asked for when doing the reservation- they are beautiful leather couches with a view from the window down into the Royal Arcade, ( for those in different parts of the world, this is a lovely 19th century shopping arcade, cast iron lacework and all) The couches will seat up to 5, or there is also the option of the two leather wing back chairs ( seats two) if you want a more private gathering

Royal Arcade pictures

Koko Black is definately Chocolate rather than Cake. I was going to put a suggestion up for a meeting at Laurent during Aussiecon in the World cake tour blog. However, I didnt want it to actually clash with Aussiecon. Another option might be for me ( or someone else) to BRING cake to Aussiecon one day so we can actually do something on site ( and induct other devotees into the cult of Mckinley) What do you think? has anyone any experience with adding an event to a con program?

Now you're making me really sorry I can't be there with you all! Love Koko Black. Their hot chocolate is to die for, and having cake with it is redundant.
Enjoy the conference, the chocolate and the cake (if you have the extra event as suggested by Kaliedescope).

Well one way or another I will be going to Kokoblack Smile But if any of the locals can suggest a better cake type place for a meetup then I will certainly be happy to attend provided I can get there. Wont have wheels so either within walking distance or public transport would be helpful Smile

Laurent's is very nice and conveniently placed in the city. Brunetti's in the city is a little small, but depending on the numbers, we could go there.

Okay, so what's the plan? Are there any times/dates that particularly suit people? Or not? (I'm having the greatest difficulty working out what actually happens at a Worldcon. I know there's a ball. Two balls. And authors wandering around loose. But that's it!)

http://www.aussiecon4.org.au/index.php?page=92 is the offical events

So either the first day looks like it has potential - I arrive on the 1st and leave on the 8th. I have scheduled the 7th for shopping and a photography trip to the zoo to see the snow leopards, so Im free around those times

But I don't understand - what are people doing all day? Is it all just coffee and cake?

I have never been to a con, but there should be tracks where authors will do readings, there are panel discussions, there is the Art SHow and the Dealer room for shopping.

One of my main reasons to go is to actually meet Face to Face as many of the people and friends I have met on the Interwebs as this is probably the only opportunity I will get to do that.

I gather Cons usually have a lot happening, the Events section is a bit lightweight unfortunately.

Also filksings, costume contest, author signings, etc.
http://www.aussiecon4.org.au/index.php?page=70
There should be a detailed program of the panels and talks, but it doesn't seem to be ready yet, although as the event is less than a month away, that seems strange.

Yeah, all I could see was a 9-5 kaffeeklatsch thing. Which is lovely and all, but I took four days leave to go to this!

Weird.

The progress report #4 that you can download here http://www.aussiecon4.org/index.php?page=29#pr4 says the program is being finalized. Seems like they're just running late but there really will be wall-to-wall stuff to do if you have faith and show up!

Ooh! Can I have a lamb? They're so cute!

(We may have to disguise it as a poodle. The council here is weirdly prejudiced against farm animals. NONE allowed.*)

ETA: Unfortunately, I have house guests during the four days. But you should absolutely come down and go to the ball!

Hmm, I wonder if I still fit in my red satin dress. And maybe I should let that cloak hem down...

From the benefit of my experience ( exactly one Worldcon, Aussiecon 3) I can tell you that there will be:
Almost continuous writer/reader panels ( talkfests)
A movie/video room(s) continuously showing something( and rarely repeating)
A dealers room with more bookshops/ magazines than is safe to be exposed to for one day ( let alone 4)
(A) room(s) full of people playing games
An art gallery ( fan/semiprofessional art)
Also as mentioned filksinging (though it is not as well embraced a fan art as in North America)

Now, CAKE: I havent kept track of when who is where. Is Thursday Morning (before the Con opens officially) to early in the day to meet for cake?
Or does someone have another time to suggest?
Does the mention of 2 balls mean everyone else is going to the Horror ball on Friday night, or is that time free?

I'm not sure yet if I'm going to the horror ball. I understand (with some foreboding) that there are many late night Worldcon activities. Besides, two balls in four days would be a trifle overdoing it for me.

You could (like me) just plan NOT to go to many of the late night things....
I would classify myself as a "reader" My impression is that most of the people on the list would also fit into the category more or less.

I have friends who are 'fans". They freely admit that they dont read much Science Fiction, and that they go to conventions for the social aspect- Cool parties, interesting geeky people to meet.

Some people with stanima are able to be both. Personally, I have to pace myself a bit and the books will always come first. That being said, I'll pop my head into a few parties, but I'm not planning to stay late.

(This post may remind you of the "Geek hierarchy" geek hierarchy)

Well, I have to go to the masquerade. I made Faramir buy me a Venetian mask on our honeymoon and haven't actually worn it anywhere...

Program's up

Basically there seem to be a dozen or more things you have to choose between every hour of the day.

Have fun!

I'm not sure if you've seen this elsewhere, but apparently Masquerade is a costume contest rather than a ball. The Nightmare Ball is the actual masked ball. But it costs more... Sad

So... uh... how's Thursday morning at, say, 10 am? Laurent's patisserie for an hour. (Then I'm skedaddling over to the con to get in line for John Scalzi's signing.)

YES!

Laurent Boulangerie Patisserie 306 Little Collins Street Melbourne
10am Thursday September 2.
Try to meet downstairs, but if it is way to crowded take a look upstairs as well.

Flaunt a Mckinley book with pride to be recognised.

I'm supposed to have snout to grindstone at work - but I'll see if I can get away.

Any other locals attending? People I can potentially recruit as bellringers? :+>

Both my husband Leon and I should make it, with a bit of luck.

I will be giving out some bookmarks - bell-ringing ones! We made them up for the tower and since we make them I thought I'd bring some along.

If anyone there is ever likely to send anything to Robin herself I'll give them one to send to her. We really should get one to Robin one day!

Looking forward to seeing people there!
