I know that I am one of many who look forward to the rare occasions Robin can beat her software into submission and post us some photos. I have been out with my camera a bit lately, and I have just uploaded 3 new photos on my Flickr site.

I have a Canon S3is and love it to bits. Its what they call a 'bridge' camera - a camera that has training wheels in preparation for a DSLR. Its a lot more affordable and fully auto and manual as well. Built in supermacro thats pretty damn good to, which I quite like playing with (and see the AWESOME blossom shot I got using it)

Im still learning about this photography lark, its hard to take a good photo and I have had a lot of fun over the years playing and learning, and getting the occasional "ooh" shot. Digital has surely made it cheaper and much more instant and way more fun.

I like taking photos of plants esp in the macro mode, also I strive to get a slightly different angle on animals, I have a meerkat shot Im quite fond of - he looks very worried. And of course I have endless shots of my furballs.

So what kind of camera do you have? Why that one for you? What stirs your passion for photography? Whats your best photo? Whats your best photo story?

What a great shot! I was just saying to Mum yesterday that I would love to take some really really good shots but that would mean a new camera and learning all the exposure stuff (I've been cheating with an auto - Olympus - and it is good but not SUPER if you get my drift).
The pics I have been taking of my roses have just been a digital that I borrow. So okay but not real macro stuff.

Oooh, photo talk. Pretty much all of my family and friends associate me with a camera. I'm a self-admitted shutterbug. I'm by no means the most knowledgeable or talented one, but I have a lot of fun with it and it's always been one of my passions. I remember the Christmas I was given my first camera at age seven, because my mom stopped me from opening a gift I'd handed to myself (as of the official distributor of gifts) until after I'd opened a different one. The forbidden one was the case for the 35mm camera. In high school I had an Olympus SLR and took a couple of classes. My mom, also into photography, managed to build a darkroom in our basement that we could both use for developing and enlarging. Things died a bit down in college (though I did take that SLR on a month-long trip to study killer whales my sophomore year--and came back with 12 rolls of film to develop, oof). I switched back to a point and shoot at some point, and then when digital came around I waited for a while before really getting something good.

I have a little Sony DSC-N2 that lives in my purse and is with me wherever I go. Its menus are touch-screen operated and it works great. Most of the pictures on my Flickr page were taken with that camera. I used it for a couple of years as my only camera before I finally got to the "eventually" my mind had insisted on waiting for this year (and the little camera is in no way replaced, it's just a different purpose). I finally had the finances and I thought the time was right to get a full-frame DSLR Nikon D700. I thought if I was going to go all-out for a fancy camera, I should get the full-frame, and my timing was lucky in that one with the size I wanted had just come out (I considered the other options too big and bulky to haul around, not to mention even more expensive).

Telephoto and close-up pictures are my favorite, because nature and wildlife are my photo passions, so I've got the hefty lens for it. I only got it a couple of months ago, so I'm still learning all the bells and whistles and how to make it work best, but I'm so incredibly happy with it. And I'm using it constantly. I got it in mid-August and it's already been on two trips with me in addition to taking it around town and using it in my yard. I've taken over 7500 pictures in that time. Of course, the biggest problem with taking so many pictures is going through them all and picking out which ones to edit! That part has slowed down considerably... and since I just got back from one of those trips yesterday, I've got even more to sort. :>

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3030/2869781173_9d067dc25f.jpg?v=0
The reason I got the telephoto: bird pictures! And, well, any other kind of creature that I would startle away by getting too close. I love taking pictures of animals. I didn't have to really chase this one, though. Hummingbirds are all over my yard, consider it their territory, and get all perturbed when I go out (to take care of the roses, of course).

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3181/2760547249_6e2d8ae021.jpg?v=0
Some of the agapanthus in my front yard, using the macro lens. I also go after bees and butterflies a lot... the bees are usually so absorbed in the flowers they don't care about me, so I've got quite a few of them.

Wendy its a lovely shot of a red rose. I wonder if you know just how hard I have tried to get a shot anywhere near that. You have perfect lighting for it so you get that lovely velvety feel. And a cute little spider for a bonus Smile

Lianne I am drooling over your shots, the agapanthus macro is amazing and the deep cobalt blue colour of the buds is fantastic.

You have the kind of setup I dream about, and I am also like you wanting a good telephoto for the animal shots. When you say you are still getting used to it, what is there to get used to? Is it one of those fancy autofocus models?

BTW your hummingbird shot (also fabulous) reminded me of this guy - I have this shot saved in my Flickr favourites and he has quite a few hummingbird shots

I know how big a monarda flower head is, and that little bird is TINY!

I think I am more of a snapshot taker than a photographer, but I am passionate about it and have great fun taking pictures, and taking tons. I used to only do portraits of people, but since going digital I have expanded a lot. I have great fun using my little IXUS to record sunsets
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2223/2453307506_fcc80320dd.jpg

and flowers and my family. I also have a project to record all the art grafitti I find interesting, as its so ephemeral.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3062/2975809870_a8379dcb39.jpg

Needless to say I take a ton of pictures (several thousand) whenever I go on vacation. I use my camera as a sort of picture diary. I do envy those of you with more complex cameras, with great lenses etc. but know that I love having my IXUS in my pocket or handbag at all times and would never get around to taking a complex heavy camera around with me.

It's amazing how easy it is to expand with digital. I keep comparing those 12 rolls (figure ~430 pictures in a month) I brought back from the whale summer with how many I take these days (I can easily shoot 430 in a day)... no comparison. And there is nothing wrong with snapshots - my little camera lives in my purse for just that reason. I take it everywhere I go, use it as a diary like you mentioned, and it's definitely my people camera. The small ones can get pretty amazing pictures on their own merit.

And that is one amazing sunset.

I will be heading over there to look. I wish my place faced west, because it would be a spectacular setup if it did... it looks east and a little bit south. But I don't even get particularly good sunrises.

I know! It's so easy to be experimental, because you're not factoring in cost of film and development and can always delete complete disasters. And it's easy and fun... Your agapanthus shot has me in awe! But I take tons of pictures I enjoy and am amazed how a small camera such as mine manages to catch as much as it does Smile This is from the Lake District, this summer:

Thank you! Yeah, I love the darker agapanthus blossoms... these were the last ones to bloom, and I'd had all lighter ones up until then. I think they were the last flower mystery... I bought my house just under a year ago, and as the seasons have changed and the flowers have bloomed I've had lots of fun figuring out what I got with the house.

It certainly has autofocus, and definitely the fancy kind, but it has so much more that I want to try and experiment and learn how to use all of it. I kind of feel I'd be doing an injustice to such an expensive and elaborate camera if I didn't. Autofocus and autosettings don't always give the effect you have in mind, or read strangely with existing light conditions, or you can change settings and work with really bad lighting... all sorts of things. I knew some of these things in high school when I was working with my old film SLR, but it's been a long time and I've forgotten a lot of it. And, well, there's so much more you can do with a digital camera!

Thanks! It was a little too close for comfort, but it missed us by quite a ways. Now in '99 we had a big one here, missed my house by less than a quarter mile. Who would have thought we'd have tornadoes in Salt Lake?

Shelley, I'm astounded you stuck around to take that picture. You would have been seeing the soles of my feet.

Bonnie: that is a lovely view. I think mountains and sky give you that sense of space. My mountains are in the far distance, between blocks of flats, but I wouldn't trade my sky for the world Smile

Ahhh, I love any and all pack animals, so sweet! (I have a donkey photo from Cyprus in my photo stream)

The yacht club that I sail out of has the most wonderful sunsets. I'm bad at taking pictures during the race (I'm generally working the main, trimming the job, or focused on wind lines), but I often take a few pics afterwards on my trusty little Olympus SP-350. It's a compact digital with optional manual settings.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3163/2574315640_c232d1ce16.jpg original here

But of course, compact digitals have that wonderful super macro setting, which I generally cannot resist:

(japanese maple)

It's hard choosing from all those macros!

Snort. I got a giggle out of that. As I read it, I flashed on the image of a certain type of individual who thinks his attractiveness knows no bounds approaching to pick you up. The expression is very similar. ROTFL

Our donkey seems positively ill-tempered compared to that one... Daisy's always chasing away the goats from what is clearly food meant for only her... We got the donkey because they are supposed to keep off coyotes, but she terrorizes the herd in exchange for her protection... Dictatorship by Donkey...

Reading Angel, you have a donkey? I'm envious! Do you have any pictures?

And, to stay topical, here's a donkey picture, taken in Cyprus, and a burro picture, taken in Dartmouth N.S.

Unfortunately I don't have a picture, because it was before the digital age, but once on a family vacation in South Dakota, we were driving along the road and saw a small herd of wild donkeys. So, we got out and mom went in the trunk to get her camera, and they ambled over.

And one stuck his(or her) head in the trunk and took a big bite out of a cardboard box that we had holding some things. O_O Mmmm...cardboard.

Ah, here's a topic up my alley!

When I met my to-be-husband a few years ago, I had never been much interested in photography beyond documenting vacations and holidays, etc. But he was a photographer...shot digital with a Canon dSLR...and I discovered that photography is contagious. He infected me shamelessly, and I've never looked back! Since he already had quite a few Canon lenses, I sort of inherited shooting Canon (as opposed to Nikon...the endless debate!) and bought a Rebel XT. I have little girly hands, you see, and the larger dSLRs can be very awkward for me, especially when you put a big lens on!

I've since upgraded to a newer Rebel XSi, and added several lenses to our stable. I finally bought myself a REAL MACRO LENS recently, and I love it. Muchly. I also have a lovely wide angle, and a small assortment of zooms.

My husband and I went on a belated honeymoon/first anniversary vacation to Hawaii a few weeks back, and we were snap-happy fools! Sea turtles, geckos, exotic flowers, lava, crashing waves....!!

A couple of my favorites from the trip:

This little guy is only about 3 inches long from nose to tail-tip:

Even out in the middle of the lava fields at Kilauea, there was life:

If you want to see more of my stuff, I do have a Flickr account! Right now, there are a lot of portraits of me and my husband; we're working on a project in which we're taking a self-portrait together every day for a year. Surprised

*grin* I have little girly hands, too. I understand! Though that's actually one reason I went with the Nikon over the Canon. With a smaller lens, the Canon felt better to grip. But with the big telephoto, the Nikon did. I figured I was going to spend more time with the telephoto lens on the camera than any other, so that's how I decided. And now I'm used to it and love it with any lens. My mom uses Canon equipment and I've played with hers a number of times, though - I'm not one of those rabid one-is-so-much-better-than-the-other people.

Beautiful photos there. (I love lizards.) And will definitely look through the flickr account... the self-portrait series is neat.

My husband is a photographer (and an English professor and a filmmaker and a great husband...) and he rolls with Canon, too. I get his hand-me-downs! (He upgrades a lot! Yay!)
