Lackey has created some memorable characters and worlds, though I feel that she needs work in the ability to develop a situation or character by hint, rather than by infodump.
All the elemental magic/refigured fairy tale stories are good. I think my favorite is Serpent's Shadow (note the presence of the young Lord Peter Wimsey, more or less!), but Phoenix and Ashes and Gates of Sleep are also good, especially the down-to-earth bohemian artists in Gates of Sleep.

I just finished Mockingjay, the third book of Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games trilogy.
Still recovering.

Thanks for this recommendation. My library doesn't have Blackbringer, but it has Lips Touch Three Times, a collection of three short stories/novellas. I just read the first one, and wow, this woman writes like a . . . like
"a woman who would dive off the prow of a sailboat into the sea, who would fall back in a tangle of sheets, laughing, and who could dance a tango, lazily stoke a leopard with her bare foot, freeze an enemy's blood with her eyes, make promises she couldn't possibly keep, and then shift the world to keep them."
Plus she has pink hair. She's my new hero.

Yes, they have that compelling quality about them. I'm not sure whether they're going to be on my all-time favourites list: I haven't yet felt the need to reread them. But they were very enjoyable.

I have to add one more post to squee about Laini Taylor again. I just finished her second novella: *jumps up and down clutching the book to her chest* Spicy Little Curses Such as These. What a title! And the first chapter is called "The Demon and the Old Bitch." And it just gets better from there!
I had to tell someone, and everyone here is asleep. Now I'm going to put the book down and go to bed. Truly, I am.
