We've recently seen The Straight Story:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0166896/

A very quiet, gentle movie - simply wonderful. And Richard Farnsworth was lovely in it.

Currently I'm watching Rainbow - Nisha Rokubō no Shichinin, and other various random things (like the dust collecting in my empty, empty wallet).

Oh lets see... Hamlet done by the Royal Shakespeare Company with David Tennant as Hamlet—here is a clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xYZHb2xo0OI—the Sherlock Holmes movie, 24, Fringe, Lost and Foyle's War—not exactly in that order.

For some very strange reason, I have become addicted to 'Masterchef'. A couple of things work against this - I usually don't watch commercial television at all because I can't bear the ads; I despise the move to 'reality' tv as opposed to well-produced drama; I'm not a cook and am generally not at all interested in cooking shows.

But despite all that, there I am 7.30pm, 6 nights a week - utterly hooked! I don't know why. I can see through all the product placement, the contrivances to stir up interest, the drawn out announcements (e.g. "And the winner is...." long pause, several camera shots of various contestants looking nervous, then cut to ad break - grr!) I've become engaged by the contestants and the sheer silliness of the whole concept, I suppose.

One really good thing has come out of it. We've had a hard disk recorder for two years now, and I've never come to terms with being able to use it for recording, and it's mainly just been a DVD player. However, the constant, utterly puerile advertisments crammed endlessly into 'Masterchef' have driven me to learn, and I'm now very happily timeshift recording every night, and even timer recording other programs.

Apparently, Cameron Diaz and Tom Cruise have been trying to unmask the Stig:

I wonder if they succeeded? This will be shown on Sunday - tomorrow? - in the UK. I'm so, so envious - and suddenly I just crave some Top Gear!

I've been thinking of watching Bab5 again since I saw Crusade recently. Right now, I have the first season of Bones, and the third season of Supernatural.

The Husband, the Younger Daughter and I are watching the second season of Warehouse 13 on the Siffy, um, Scifi channel. Younger Daughter was so taken with the first two episodes that I bought her the first season DVDs, which I think she's just finished. It's a lot of fun, and the steampunk thing is pretty cool.

One of these days I'll have to show her some Nero Wolfe episodes with Saul Rubinek in, just so she can see what else he's done.

Younger Daughter and I have also been watching Doctor Who repeats on BBCAmerica, a few at a time.

The Husband and I are also watching the new season of Leverage (and there's another Nero Wolfe connection).

Oh, I love Babylon 5 and Crusade. I wonder if my old videotapes are still watchable?

Hm...NCIS reruns because they're on all the time, The Tudors season 2, the new Doctor Who episodes with Matt Smith (I still prefer Tennant but I'm definitely enjoying this new Doctor "bow ties ARE cool").

I'm also trying to get caught up on True Blood because I don't have HBO.

I found Matt Smith grew on me, though I still adore Tennant... in everything I've seen from him. Also, I keep noticing various characters wearing bow ties in other shows and having Smith's doctor say that in my head....

Just watched Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland. I've been putting it off, because I've studied Alice for years and am always disappointed with movies/tv movies that depict it. Basically, I liked it: He did some interesting things, but I think it would have been better with a different title, because it clearly isn't Carroll's Alice. So many of my students don't know the real story (I see this often with fairy tales, too) because they have grown up on the Disney versions. This may make me sound old and crotchety, but I am old and crotchety! Smile The film is worth a viewing.

Thanks, that's good to know. I've been a bit doubtful about the movie since it so very clearly isn't like the book - and I have read the book. Smile

Yes, and me too - if people think watching an adaptation of a book is the same as having read the book, that drives me... berserk! (And let's not talk about severely simplified and abridged books - "Jane Eyre" in 20 pages?! I think not!)

I wish I had access to B5, though I don't know if I could bring myself to watch the first and last seasons again. So many good characters and actors on that show.

Angelia, it's great to hear that even "old and crotchety" people like Supernatural! I was introduced this last year and spent the first half of the summer catching up. Are you rewatching or watching for the first time?

Yes, I agree. David Tennant remains the outstanding Doctor, as far as I'm concerned.

I'm watching it for the first time--just finished the fourth season--waiting for five! I get them from the library, so there is often a time gap between seasons. Smile

We're on the first season of Alias. (Unless we've finished it - with my cassettes having all manner of things mixed up on them, it's difficult to be sure...)

A quick followup--Prime Suspect: The Final Act is wonderful! I'm going to do some research to see if there are any other PSs that I have missed!

I'm also watching Dollhouse (season 1) again in anticipation of the release on DVD of season 2 (October, I think).

I've started watching Torchwood from the beginning. I try not to watch shows until they've been on the air for a couple years at least. Don't ask me why I do that--probably because I hate waiting months for the next season, and I inevitably get invested in a show and then it gets canceled (i.e. Joss Whedon). I didn't watch any episodes of Friends until it went off the air.
