I'm NOT 25 but I do like ATGB.

If you get the DVDs, dont forget the reunion specials.

Just watched Doctor Who, "Blink." We had taped it. Every time I see that episode I'm blown away.

I saw the Doctor Who Confidential about that episode... it was pretty awesome. You should hunt it down if you can. ^^

Here we go again. I think the "Save Dollhouse" websites have already been started.

Yay! It's hard enough to find older people who like ATGB, much less people my own age! I also discovered Britcoms through PBS Saturday nights when we briefly had a TV for a year or so, and had a rabbit-ears antenna that picked up pretty much only PBS. ATGB, Keeping Up Appearances, and Are You Being Served? especially.

Smile
Judi Dench and Geoffrey Palmer [and all the rest of the cast] are simply marvelous!

Quote:

Did you by any chance find ATGB episodes?

No!
I keep looking, but still nothing. For a very short while, there were a few bits on YouTube, just compilations of episodes- short clips and so on, but they have been taken down now.

Quote:

I haven't been able to find any at all, although most other Britcoms have quite a lot. I have found that eBay usually has the whole series boxed set much cheaper than Amazon or anywhere else--around $45-60, sometimes as low as $30! I've yet to buy it, but it's next on my list. I've got birthday money on the horizon, so I plan to get it soon. I have the first three seasons on DVD now, but so many of my favorite episodes are later. I can't wait to get it!

Same here... I keep thinking about it, but to spend such a chunk of money in DVDs... I don't know. So I haven't actually bought it yet- though I have gone on Amazon and saved it to the shopping cart list thing. The only way I justify it to myself is that I can share it with my grandmother... so maybe I'll buy it for the both of us and she and I can share it. Smile
In the meantime, you could see if your library has it available. Over the summer when I was home, I got the full season of To The Manor Born through the library system, even though my own town library doesn't own it. Just a thought.

Whoosh. 10 days of vacation and the forum has so many posts! It's going to take me a while to catch up. But here's the first round of babble. Wink

I'm watching TV regularly for the first time since middle school (and I'm now 33). When we moved, my teenage self was deprived of television and somehow got unaddicted. I never bothered to get reception again until I moved in last year with someone who wanted it. Since he was willing to arrange and pay for it, I said sure. And now I'm rehooked. Darnit. Not to say I was completely out of the TV loop before, I just was always a season behind, because I didn't see it until it was out on DVD.

For already-done and no longer on TV stuff, I love Wonderfalls, Firefly, Stargate SG1, Farscape...

Currently airing I watch Doctor Who, Stargate Atlantis, Sanctuary (trying it out anyway, though not hooked yet), lots of MASH reruns, What Not To Wear, Good Eats, Mythbusters, Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy, Grey's Anatomy... :> I'm undoubtedly forgetting some. I love the DVR where I can just record and then watch later. I can't stand sitting through commercials anymore.

Adding my voice to the love of the Britcoms, though I had forgotten about them when I scheduled in my program-recording. I will have to go add those. Smile It'll be nice to pick them up again. I unfortunately don't get the BBC channel, which is probably why I forgot to look to see if they aired elsewhere. I do know they do, I just blanked.

Wow, my plane is finally going to board in about 15 minutes--I should pack up the computer. I've been sitting at the airport for almost 3 hours, since my mom's flight went out before mine. It's nice to head home... I'll undoubtedly have cuddle-cats tonight.

Didn't it win the Hugo this year?

I love Confidential. It's like getting 2-for-1 shows.

How many people watch TV the way they read books (or vice versa, I guess)? I mean, get fannish about shows -- become immersed in their world, obsessed about characters, write too much meta about it, etc.

You'd have thought that by now they (the networks) would know what the the rest of us know--that Whedon is a genius, pure and simple--and would leave him alone to do his thing.

Yeah, I wouldn't pay the Amazon price for them, but even they have it used for $45, and sometimes it's even less on eBay. I'd probably pay up to $50 or so, which is all I can afford. It is all nine seasons, and the seasons are pretty expensive individually. The problem with buying the individual seasons is that they're so short - only 10 episodes or so apiece, while American seasons tend to be more, but they still cost almost as much! I'm hoping to buy it for myself as a birthday present Smile

I do that with most of my shows. LOST is the only show I watch regularly, and I obsess over it, reading reviews, watching for spoilers, talking about it with friends. It's a show my dad and I both like, so we analyze it together.

If I watch shows on DVD, Firefly, Heroes, Alias, I also usually obsess over then, but Lost is unique in that I follow it from week to week.

Have you looked on PBS? That's the local channel that I get them on. Check your local website. They're on tv on the weekends in my state, but I don't know about others.

Hope you find them Smile

I have some shows that I watch week-to-week and that seems to feed the obsession a bit, because there's time to discuss each episode and to speculate about what'll happen next.

I think reading comic book installments (rather than the trades, which tend to have the entire story or at least an arc) tends to go the same way too, if not more so because there's more time between each issue than a week, usually (and sometimes it's months when you're Joss Whedon).

Meanwhile, I'm marathoning Due South still.

^^Not really spoilers, but just in case.

I love this show a lot. It's not quite as brilliantly written as Slings & Arrows, but it's still awesome. I like the two main characters, as individuals and together. The show plays up the Canadian vs American culture clash in a way that tends to be amusing - without humiliating anyone (that kind of humour I cannot stand to watch) - and works to develop the characters, their relationship and even the plot.

Well I sent away for the first season of Supernatural. This is for you Charis! And Angel!

Happy viewing! I have to skip all the plot gory bits because I cannot stand horror at all (and yet I watch SPN and all of Whedon's shows). But the brother/family stuff is great. I have a thing for the "you and me against the world" theme, and this show totally delivers on that front.

(I don't think the actual show itself is all that good, but I have never fallen so fast for a show or character before. Especially one I had no intention of watching because I don't like horror. All it took was "Renegade" by Styx... (though the BEST (and dorkiest) montage is still "Carry On Wayward Son").

I think the end of season one through the beginning/first two-thirds of season two have been the show's best moments in terms of plot (which, er, have holes you could drive monster trucks through), writing (oh, season three) and characterization (something they get right, more often than not).

Season one is quite rough around the edges, particularly in the beginning. And middle. And near the end. But it sort of adds to the charm. There's also a sense of glee - "Yay, we have a show!" - to it that I find delightful.)

You'll have to come back and say if you're a Deangirl or Samgirl. Wink

Supernatural is one of the (few) shows I watch. (I'm always a season behind, though. TV does not come to my house (by choice!), so I have to wait for DVDs of everything. We watched the first season on a third shift (my husband rotates shifts, and third is from 11pm to 7am...and I stay up), and that whole week I was looking over my shoulder, waiting for something to pop out at me.

Nothing happened, by the way. Smile

Hope you like the show!

I forgot Top Gear! How could I forget Jeremy and Richard and James?

We have a tivo sort of thing and record what we want to watch, too. Makes things so much easier.

Hurrah for both Top Gear and Tivo! I couldn't keep track of anything if I had to watch it at the time it actually aired.

I watch CSI, CSI:NY, and Bones fairly religiously, and am giving Eleventh Hour a try. I usually record a dog training show or two (the current choice is Victoria Stillwell's "It's Me or the Dog"). My husband and I watch Dr. Who and Eureka together, plus miscellaneous Discovery Channel shows (Dirty Jobs, Mythbusters, etc.). Plus Alton Brown, plus Project Runway, plus Top Gear.

OK. I watched one Supernatural, not from the first season--it hasn't come yet--but I think I can honestly say (already) that I'm a Samgirl. He's the one with the longer hair, right?

Yes. His hair... It's, well, got powers of its own.

It was a bit confusing for me at the start because Sam = cute!Dean from Gilmore Girls, so there was cute!Dean and hot!Dean for a while...

Yayy! I just found out that the Sarah Jane Adventures have gone into season two! It's another Doctor Who spinoff.... this time for a younger audience (as opposed to Torchwood being even more mature than normal Doctor Who). First three two-episode series are out. Second one is about creepy clowns... ><

So, we watched Blink tonight because I'd never seen it. Freaked me out! I'm sort of glad that I had heard about it before, though - it sort of mitigated the freaked-out-ness to some degree to have an idea of what was coming...

Charis, have you read Chesterton's Club of Queer Trades? You are so channeling the first section right now!

I haven't--you'll have to educate me!

I love that in one of the episodes, when the brothers go to Hollywood, there's a reference to Gilmore Girls. It's very subtle, but I was cracking up. It was awesome.

I'd seen it as an extant show, but hadn't looked into it at all. That article just convinced me I need to at least watch a few episodes. Also, because the original Glinda from the broadway production of Wicked is on it. 0_0

Why is it that all the best shows struggle? So many of them get cancelled and THEN people find it and it becomes a cult classic; unfortunately, it's usually too late for the show to continue. Although, I guess there is some hope; Star Trek was originally cancelled, and look what happened to them!

There was some show that got cancelled in the late eighties that I really loved, but have forgotten the name and details of it, other than it lasted only one season and was set in a medieval castle. Another show I loved that got cancelled too early, IMHO, was American Dreams (a show set in 1960's Philly that revolved around a family with a girl who danced on Bandstand and a boy who was the star high school quarterback).

I think they're too eager to cancel - they ought to give a show time to develop and find it's style and an audience. I don't even think they are saving money doing that. It's terribly wasteful and annoying - and frankly, it wouldn't surprise me at all if it actually doesn't make it harder for a new series to acquire an audience at all; what's the point - it might be cancelled at any moment, anyway? It's breaking faith with the viewer - at least have a full season, and if it's to be cancelled, give the show some kind of ending; not necessarily a tying-together-all-loose-ends ending, but some kind of "closure"...

Why, I feel all thin, sort of stretched, if you know what I mean, like butter that has been scraped over too much bread.
