Oh darn. I just typed up this whole thing, and then hit the wrong button and my computer ate it. So I'm just going to post the link again, and leave out the babbling about coincidences and perfect timing what with just having reread Dragonhaven and all...
Look what is on PBS in 5 minutes or so...
"The Dragon Chronicles... Introduction:
As a young boy, renowned reptile expert and conservationist Romulus (”Rom”) Whitaker dreamed of finding dragons. Years later, the successful herpetologist decided to set out to discover the real-life origins of these mythical monsters.
Rom’s snake park and crocodile bank in India, where he works to conserve and breed reptiles in the wild, were the first of their kind when he created them. Now he travels the world in search of modern day dragons. In the caves of Slovenia, he encounters the peculiar creature known as the olm, a cave-dwelling blind salamander once believed to be a baby dragon. In the rainforests of India’s Western Ghats, Whitaker handles flying lizards, belonging to the species called Draco. When threatened or courting, the males extend the bright yellow flaps on their necks. Whitaker captures one and gently stretches out its amazing wings. Finally, Rom’s quest leads him to Indonesia’s Komodo Island, where he sees a wild Komodo dragon for the first time.
The Dragon Chronicles follows Rom as he journeys around the world, reimagining the lines between fact and fantasy, in search of the fabled beasts’ contemporary counterparts.
The Dragon Chronicles premieres Sunday, January 11 on PBS (check local listings)."

Yes! I watched Dr Horrible because I love Whedon and Felicia Day and Nathan Fillion... the DVD, by the way, is amazing. Commentary! is hilarious, has -nothing- to do with the actual film, and is 99% sung.
Promptly fell in love with NPH too, and have now seen all of How I Met You Mother. In about three days, until I caught up with present.

The BBC has just run the second hour of a short (six one-hour episodes) documentary series about three people who are living on and working a farm, in Shropshire, using the methods, resources and skills of people from the 1880s. There's one woman, an expert on practical home economics, and two men - also with a lot of practical skills. It's really fascinating. These same three were in another similar series a year or so ago, doing mediaeval farming, and that was excellent as well. The three of them obviously all get on and work together well but my goodness, the hours it took to do things we take for granted are instantly available now. I remember my grandmother describing how it took a day and a half to do the weekly wash, back around the time of WWI, but that was seemingly quite an advance from the four days (not four whole days) it took in the late 19th century. The various methods of stain removal from that time sounded very useful though!

They did a similar thing with a family here in CHCH - one of those reality TV type things. We have an early settlers village here called Ferrymead with turn of (last) century original building and clothes and equipment.
They were provided with a Tent, appropriate clothes, basic supplies, a cow etc and had to survive for about a month, and the highlights were filmed and shown on TV
Again it was interesting, the mother basically spent ALL DAY preparing all the food (rising and baking own bread etc). Milking the cow was difficult as the cow was uncooperative. The eldest girl did lots of washing (and they unfortunately had lots of rain it lots of mud)
I didnt see all of it, but I saw what was probably the highlight, when they walked into the nearest suburb to do some market shopping and had a meal at a local pub (all perfectly period) and were delighted to sit down and eat a hot roast meal.
The children became a lot more appreciative of how cruisy their life today is
http://tvnz.co.nz/view/page/1646879
In a related note, I saw an english one where a group of people were recreating the Iron Age, and they were allowed to (very badly) cook chickens and most of them came down with severe food poisoning. One guy so bad he suffered for several days before they And another girl with a severe cut in her foot had to walk to the nearest medical center - the narration stated they didnt want to interfere and make the participants think they would not have to work hard at trying for some 'truth"
I thought it was APPALLING and totally put me off any and all reality TV (this was ooh about 8 or so years ago)

Today I watched figure skating, the European Championships, (the end of) the men's short program. I really enjoyed Brian Joubert (I taped it and am keeping his performance) - I hope he wins tomorrow! (He got 86,90 for the short and is leading currently) It's funny, I don't watch figure skating regularly, and whenever I do, Brian Joubert is "back" - he's had some injury-problems it seems; and I always seem to miss his bad patches, and I'm glad, because I like watching him do well. I'm looking forward to tomorrow, and would enjoy myself more if it weren't for the (Swedish) commentators - particularly the man - but I won't say more than that I had to say "Shut up!" to him aloud several times... (he didn't listen...)
I still really, really miss

Yes, there have been many great performances - I liked Yagudin too! And you know that Frenchman - who's name obviously completely escapes me at the moment - he skated to the music from The Man in the Iron Mask - Philippe something, wasn't it? I've got that somewhere. But for me there was just something extra special about these performances from Plushenko - and Yagudin has been gone too long - I still have a secret hope that Plushenko could come back(sigh). Anyway I truly enjoy Brian Joubert and luckily no Swede is good enough for that - erm - commentator to ruin my enjoyment by wishing ill on him. (Yes - I kid you not, it is that bad.)

(I remembered - Candeloro - I don't know about the spelling.)
And here - long live Youtube! - is Joubert's performance from yesterday:
http://se.youtube.com/watch?v=Yp5eSRZ6s30
EDIT: And I actually found Candeloro - it was D'Artagnan and not The Man in the Iron Mask (but surely somebody has done that or am I just hallucinating? A mind like a sieve is such a frustrating thing!)

I suppose I just like my skating best with a little power - I wasn't aware of it myself, but considering the performances I really like...

Yes, it is amazing, isn't it? It is true that somebody always does hire the incapable people (as it's stated in "Miss Marjoribanks" by Margaret Oliphant) - why is that?`
Fortunately this one has an expert commentator to tell him about the technicalities* - unforunately he also pops up in other sports that I sometimes like to watch (like showjumping) driving me insane. He is of the "old school" - all Swedish commentators used to be like that when I was growing up. Except for Anders Gernandt - who was nothing less than brilliant. I loved him. (He commented on showjumping and other equestrian sports.) Feeling desperate it suddenly occured to me to look what had become of him - although I knew he must be old since he had competed in the Olympics in the 50s (I think). It turned out he had passed away at the age of 80 - RIP, Anders Gernandt, you gave me so much joy!
*This is especially important for me, since I cannot for the life of me see the difference in the jumps (not even in slow motion), although I can see if it's a double instead of a triple something because it looks oddly empty.

I paid attention during one winter olympics, the differences are if they jump while facing forward or if they reverse immediately beforehand. And also what direction they are facing when they land as well.
And the other difference is which blade edge of the skate they take off from, the inside or the outside
And yes the number of spins

Thanks, BlueRose! Some of that I'm not able to see - although some of the things I probably could, like if they jump facing forwards, if I really paid attention, but I'm terribly lazy.
And Joubert won thankfully - but I must say my enjoyment was marred by being struck by horror as he stumbled and even fell - I just feel too old for that kind of excitement and suspense. (Sigh)
EDIT: And here is his performance - sigh - it could have been a thing of beauty...
