I watched many True Bloods in a row. Am really starting to get hooked on that show.

When is Dollhouse supposed to air?

January 2009 Huh. February, evidently. Along with the awesome Sarah Connor Chronicles, in the Friday Night Deathslot on FOX. I suspect SCC is probably going to get cancelled too. Boo. I should stop falling in love with shows (and comic book series); they keep getting cancelled.

Calliope wrote on Wed, 03 December 2008 11:50

Dollhouse premieres February 13 at 9pm on FOX.

..... they're starting a series on Friday the 13th??? O.o Unusual.

So, two episodes before it's cancelled, then?

There was a Save Dollhouse Campaign started months ago, because Joss Whedon fans predicted that it would be prematurely cancelled(something about a trend...), so they started a movement before even seeing any of it at all...

I know; I'm a bit surprised it hasn't been cancelled before it aired, though it's not February yet, so fox still has time.

Firefly, Wonderfalls, The Inside, Drive... Yeah, those Whedon and/or Minear shows, all of which aired on FOX, for about 2 days, aren't doing all that well. I can't imagine Dollhouse, with its rather off-beat/sketchy premise, is going to do much better; it sounds more suited to a comic, I think.

But Firefly's cancellation gave way to Serenity and Astonishing X-Men, so I probably shouldn't still be complaining about that, especially with AXM.

I used to read (my brothers') X-Men comics in the '80s - and you've mentioned the Astonishing X-Men now a few times, so I'm getting curious - anything particular happened in those comics? (I don't mind spoilers Smile )

That's my guess. FOX has a rather heinous record for blowing new and innovative shows out of the starry skies before they can actually become popular. I swear they sit there and look these shows over saying,"Hmm, this one seems to be gaining ground... It'll have to go!" There were some exceptions, but those either had to do with contract restrictions (Babylon 5) or the fans had had enough of the Peek-a-boo cancellation game (X-Files).

Yes, Scott Summers is awesome! I picked it up because it had Whedon's name on it, and I still think it's some of his best work. All the stuff that interests him, that he wrote about on Buffy, Angel and Firefly, he continues in AXM; it's about family, friends, leadership, working together despite (or because of) fractuous previous relationships. Whedon does this thing where he takes characters that would otherwise be boring - the straighlaced leader types who want to stay on the straight and narrow because it's safer or whatnot - and makes them not boring. Scott, here, is written a bit like a combination of some of Whedon's other great characters (or, well, the ones I love: Buffy, Mal, Wesley). He's a tactical genuis, and Whedon actually shows him as one, even while he struggles to be a good X-Man and man; it seems to be a bit rare to find a good Scott story, though current titles are continuing this trend of showing him as a competent leader who sometimes makes mistakes and questions himself, but isn't completely awful or boring.

The rest of the cast is great too; of course, there's a coming of age/power story of a young girl -- two of them actually, with Hisako, who is a teenager and sort of accidentally becomes a fully-fledged X-Man and Kitty Pryde, who is a bit older and returning to the X-Men after not a great separation from them earlier.

It works as an introduction to the X-Men comics too, and draws on previous events that Whedon probably grew up on. If nothing else, the attention to detail to the characters - what makes them who they are and why they do the things they do - and touching on their history (because they have so much of it, individually and as a team) while creating his own story is fantastic. I find it's a bit rare to find a story (in any format) that is that good with both plot and character.

As for specific events,
Toggle Spoiler

I would so watch Joss Whedon's X-Men movie. It would be all about Scott, and only about 4 other people would watch it.

Well - I probably would be one of those four Smile I was snooping on Wikipedia fairly recently just to catch up with "recent events" and I must say I have a great deal of difficulty believing in the good Emma Frost...

To keep more on topic - I wonder what they have done with the Wolverine movie? I'm rather curious as to how that will turn out...

I must say I have a great deal of difficulty believing in the good Emma Frost...

My introduction to Emma was in Whedon's AXM, so I hadn't previously encountered her as the White Queen before (though I have read Dark Phoenix now) and I'm still not sure when her path to redemption began (or why Mavel thought it was a good idea to pair her with Scott), but one I've noticed is that Whedon doesn't really push forth the idea that she's "good" (or "good for Scott") per se, only that she's trying to do better, to atone, most of the time, while still being her cold, aloof self, which she wears as a shield as much as she does with her secondary mutation (turning into diamond form) and provocative clothing; she uses her body as a weapon. I like the way he writes her.

Quote:

To keep more on topic - I wonder what they have done with the Wolverine movie? I'm rather curious as to how that will turn out...

I'm a little more interested in Deadpool, one of the (I think) secondary characters in this film. And the rumour about young!Scott Summers being in it as well...

Speaking of superhero movies, I still haven't seen The Incredible Hulk, which I only really want to watch for one scene; maybe I'll get to it this weekend. And then watch Iron Man for the umpteeth time.

I totally adore that show. I actually often hear Stacy and Clinton in my head when I'm clothes shopping. Is that something I should be concerned about, ha?

Also, I would LOVE to have Nick do my hair!!

I'd be scared to have Nick cut my hair, mostly because what he calls easy maintenance I call way too much trouble. He respects when people don't let him cut short, but he usually wants to. He usually wants to color it, too, and there's no way I'd keep that up (for monetary reasons as well as being a hassle). And I'd never blow-dry my hair on a daily basis (it takes forEVER with my thick hair plus the hassle). That said, I like a lot of what he does. I wish there were a way to experiment with hair that didn't take as long to fix as growing out does.

I'm not sure about hearing voices in your head while shopping. =) Could be good? I've stopped myself from getting things because of their advice and been glad of it.

I do wish they wouldn't push jackets /quite/ so much, though. Those who live in warmer climates are not going to want to wear jackets very often.

Mostly, I want Nick to do my hair because currently, I HATE my hair, ha. I think if I spelled out my particular definition of low-maintenance, he might be able to do something I'd be happy with!

Ha, I think it's a good thing. It helps me pick shapes for my body, you know? Like, I love the idea of tunics, but I'm short and curvy...and I know, from having Stacy and Clinton pound it into my head, that the last thing I need is something long and structure-free like that!

And, as much as I do love a nice jacket, I agree with you in wishing that they'd show other ways to look put together, that don't involve quite as many layers and suchlike.

In the summer you can use a short sleeve shirt or blouse (made of light, breezy material but structured) over a tank or cami to get the same layered look. Ahem. Not like I'm a fashion guru or anything--I picked this up on their site.

I've been watching House M.D. like a madwoman lately. There's something very fascinating to me about a guy who is intelligent but a jerk. Probably why Snape appeals to me as well.

And True Blood, Planet Earth, Dirty Jobs and Mythbusters when I remember they are on. Plus a smattering of Will & Grace when I need something mindless.

Also, does anyone remember an animated movie called Happily Ever After? It's a non-Disney sequel to Snow White and has the Seven Dwarfettes in it? My sister reminded me of it lately and I've been dying to see it again!

I liked "The Bridge to Terabithia" - it was really well made and I think it was also a very good adaptation of the book (although it was a long time since I read it, and I only read it once). But the children felt like children instead of either small adults or film-children, if you know what I mean. Have you read the book Shelley?

Yes, that's available on DVD--it was a TV weeklong series event, back around 2000 or so. Was indeed excellent! Starred John Larroquette, who I always enjoy.

I've just watched the first four episodes of Doctor Who! They were great. I especially like the one where the Doctor meets up with Donna.

That is a great moment! I think you'll like Season 4--it's quite good.

No, I haven't read the book or seen the movie. Maybe I should.

Bring tissues. I've read the book a couple times, and seen the movie. It isn't easy no matter how much you're preparing yourself.

It's wonderful, though.

I will also say that I loved Bridge to Terabithia (sp?). I think it was one of the books that my 6th grade teacher read out loud to our class (a little everyday); she also read Where the Red Fern Grows which I also would recommend.

Terabitha is one of those books that was always up on a pedastal for me and I scorned the movie at first because the commercials made it look like they'd messed with it too much. Fortunately, my in-laws had rented and wanted to watch it while we were over; it was actually very good and seemed to follow the book fairly well from what I remembered (I hadn't reread it since college). They did modernize it some, but it worked well.
