I admit to a certain fondness for Snape, myself. And it has absolutely nothing to do with the small crush I have on Alan Rickman (that voice! Truly Madly Deeply!), really.

Lovelovelove Alan Rickman!
As for my favorite characters Spike from Buffy, Lyra from His Dark Materials,Dagny Taggart from Atlas Shrugged, and Sam Shepard as Chuck Yeager in The Right Stuff.

Eugenides, or Gen, from the Queen's Thief books. And Attolia, and Costis, and Eddis... while I'm on the subject. But mostly Gen, because he's so dang clever and funny and sneaky and awesome.

Yes! Either someone was going to mention these ones, or I was going to do it myself.

And the fourth book is slated to come out 2010. See? Yaaay!

Obviously a Jeeves and Wooster fan (see signature line), but my absolute favorite P.G. Wodehouse character is Psmith.

I know just how feel! I love this series-The Outlander series- altho I admit I have not read them all yet. I hate it when I get to the end of the book and I want to say "Wait! I'm not ready to leave yet. there must be MORE"

I'm somewhat amused.... this thread more than any of the others has got me finally picking up some of these authors I keep hearing about!

I just finished Bujold's Cordelia's Honor (Shards of Honor and Barrayar in a single volume), and can't WAIT to go get the rest of them! I also have Outlander on hold at my library, waiting for me to finish Hell and Earth.

Welcome to the boards Anna. I love Ella; I haven't read her for awhile, but I remember enjoying that twist on the Cinderella story, and how she gets by her curse.

I don't think there's an age limit on books here. At least, I like books from every "age section of the bookstore."

Another of my younger favorites, the March Girls from Little Women and Sara Crewe from Little Princess. I also liked Laurie, from the age of eight Smile

I have a preference for older J&C (Drums of Autumn and Fiery Cross), but I think my favouritest Outlander character is Lord John Grey, followed closely by Wee Ian Murray.

Dittos to a few that others have mentioned: Snape, Buffy, Aragorn and Frodo;

Some others I particularly enjoy:
Senneth from Sharon Shinn's Twelve Houses series is one of my all-time favorites. I love her calm in the face of disaster and danger, her absolute control over her responses to people, especially in the first book. She's tough and smart and completely unafraid to be exactly who she is with everyone, whether they appreciate or accept her or not. She also opens herself to being loved and therefore changed by her friends, and that's a fabulous transformation all by itself.

Piemur from Anne McCaffrey's dragon books. I love his resourcefulness and his sense of humor!

Spock!

Oar from James Alan Gardner's books Expendable and Ascending. She's got a childlike but brutal logic to her that I just love! And I love the way she turns a phrase!

Tigger! I love how cheerful he is all the time!

Jane Eyre - n'uf said!

I'm more an Eyore fan!

Chrestomanci - so sarcastic, and with the magics and the dressing gowns!

Drusilla - I love how she makes that noise when she gets upset, and says things like "the stars are singing" (and she and Spike were just awesome together)

Scarlett O'Hara - I loved how she refused to conform, although reading Gone with the wind as an adult, I realise how racist the book actually is.

Tamzin Grey - from Monica Edward's Romney Marsh series. Aptly described by Jim as "a middlin' savage female", but also brave and honourable and kind. And Rissa, as well.

Pippi Longstocking - she's a pirate, she can lift a horse with one arm, and she's just such a great tough female character.

Lorne - green, great singing voice, makes a perfect sea breeze...

I'm sure I'll think of more...

Oooh, what a fun thread!

I always had a bit of a crush on Silk from Eddings' Belgariad series. He's that lovely sarcastic roguish thief character, but a pretty nice guy underneath, too.

Death from the Discworld books, and also Cut Me Own Throat Dibbler, because he's got the best name ever. And Granny Weatherwax, of course. And Vetinari. And. And. And!

Jilly Coppercorn from DeLint's Newford books rocks my little world, but I also love Joe Crazy Dog.

Wren Elessedil from Terry Brooks' Heritage of Shannara series.

The Fool from Robin Hobb's Assassin books.

Mr. Nancy from American Gods and Anansi Boys, Mr. Ibis from American Gods, and The Corinthian from Sandman, and Silas from The Graveyard Book, all created by Neil Gaiman.

Going back a bit, I also loved Alanna from the Lioness books, and Nita and Kit from Diane Duane's Young Wizards books.

Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy have long been favorites as well as Holiday Golightly from Breakfast at Tiffanys by Truman Capote. Since there have been mention of non-book favorites, I'll have to say The Major and Batou from the anime Ghost in the Shell as well as Miss Myazawa from the anime His and Hers Circumstances. And I have long liked Aragorn.

I wonder if we're missing other obvious characters? I'll have to think on that....Sam, maybe. He was always one of my favorites too (of course, that would be anyone from LOTR)

Do others have thoughts about this?

I'll have to think about that--or maybe not. There's Saro from McKillip's The Book of Atrix Wolfe. And Atrix Wolfe. And the main character, whose name I am totally spacing out.

He's another great one; the majority of these seem to be from LOTR Smile

Though I understand why the directors decided to go that route with Faramir, it always bugs me, but anytime they veered from Tolkien's explicit statements, it jars. I love the movies, personally, but the books are better! Of course, this is usually true.

Running with Faramir, Eowyn...was she mentioned yet? Love her as one of Tolkien's strongest female characters.

And Legolas and Gimli...much better in the book. Actual complete characters! Both have senses of humor and seriousness! Best elf and dwarf...

Biblo, of course. Maybe we should just say all LOTR, and be done with it Smile

I was also partial to Thorin myself, but that could just be me.

Bilbo!

I also adored him in the film, as played by Sir Ian Holm. On a Tolkien-site there was a poll about one's favourite character from the film - and I realised it was Bilbo! He's so adorable and - well, cute, really... Smile (They say he played each take differently - it would be really fun to see those; I'm afraid whoever plays Bilbo in the upcoming film is going to be "not Ian Holm" to me... And the line "you haven't aged a day" is going to sound truly ridiculous...)

Lol, that might be an issue with the new movies, though I have other concerns about them. Biblo's great though, I loved the hobbit as a child. Still do.

Another character that I Like is Kallandras from Michelle West's Sun Sword series. As the mysterious warrior, he's great, plus he has his own code of honor. A great character and one of the reasons I love the series.

Yes, I have other concerns with the new films, too - especially the "bridge" film... Goodness knows what they will do with that. Oh well, never mind! Personally I'm hoping for the best, but also keeping in mind the possibility of utter disaster... Smile

I truly want it to be wonderful, but without Tolkien's plot...I'm just not sure.

I'm also hoping for the best, but we'll see. Maybe I'll have more characters to like better from the book.

Oh wow. I didn't know Ian Holmes wasn't playing Bilbo in the next movie Sad I'm sure I'll still see it though.

Another favorite character of mine is Ares in the Xena series. He made every episode he was in better than all the rest.

And way off genre, the Junie B. Jones character is a hoot. I think she must be a favorite because I have read some of those books more than twice to my daughter and I still laugh out loud.

Clementine from Clementine is hilarious. I prefer her over Junie B. Jones, personally.

I just read The Winter Prince by Elizabeth Wein... Medraut is such an awesome anti-hero. I wanted to like him, but I couldn't, and yet I still did...

Have we ventured into the realm of picture books? Because my mom just read Skippyjon Jones to my younger siblings. That book is hilarious, and fun to read aloud.

Picture books can be really good - I discovered that at my first job/internship at a library when I was eighteen. I always started the day with tidying up the picture book-area. That's how I discovered Graham Oakley's books - they are wonderful, and utterly hilarious!

Prudence and Robin and 'the old gentleman' from The Masqueraders by Georgette Heyer. I'd write up more about them, but I'm rather zonked at the moment...

I have a great fondness for Prudence myself, and Sir Anthony Fanshawe. When I first read this, I felt that Prudence was one of the few of the Heyer heroines I could aspire to. I've long since stopped aspiring to be like any book figure but I still get tremendous pleasure reading them Smile

Sounis is an excellent place for news and general MWT discussion. She even comments every once in awhile!

I second the Mary Challoner, Frederica, and Sophy votes. I'm fond of almost all of Georgette Heyer's capable heroines.

Anne Eliot, from Persuasion. I might even like her better than Elizabeth Bennet.

Gil in Barbara Hambly's Darwath Trilogy - female scholar/warrior. I love that combination of tough and intellectual.

Oh, and Elinor in The Reluctant Widow is my current favorite Heyer heroine - I really enjoy her (clothed in formal English) smart aleck comments.

Becky Thatcher (Tom Sawyer) is a favorite because I was named after her.

Anne Elliot (Persuasion) and Fanny Price (Mansfield Park) are my favorite Jane Austen heroines. I think one of the main reasons is that they tend to see people as they are and not just by the appearances they put on.

I have always had a special place in my heart for Ophelia (Hamlet). My final paper in my Shakespeare class was on her, her scenes were the first I had memorized. I then discovered Ophelia by Lisa Klein. I generally am not a big fan of one author taking someone else's characters and writing about them but I LOVED her interpretation of Ophelia.
