The only thing left is to give you links to Silly Putty and lava lamps,

Silly putty is great--and the rage in our office right now is This Stuff. We got the bronze color of it for an activity in the museum and I stole...er, borrowed...er... acquired a large chunk of it and shared it around with my cubefriends. Now we cannot live without it, and I am making a massive holiday order for this, and this, and THIS (watch the film!)

It wasn't internet shopping, but thanks to Robin [and the rest of you chiming in on the subject when she first mentioned it. or whenever it was, I don't really remember and anyway, I have been attempting to write papers all day and not succeeding. I read two books though], I gave someone a present of Green&Blacks chocolate today... and bought some for myself too. Yum.

The woman who named the Slinky (the wife of the original inventor) just died last month at 90. Her husband ran off to join a cult in Bolivia in the early '60s, leaving her with six kids, and she successfully managed the company until she sold it in 1998. Yay for Slinky! I had a nice teal plastic one myself.

I quite fancy those umbrellas. ***wistfully*** you can get away with it in England as being eccentric, but here you would receive some very weird looks and several cutting COMMENTS. Greeks never have any compunction in speaking their minds, particularly when what they have to say is negative. ***sigh***

I got one of these umbrellas off ThinkGeek last year. It's been really nice, I actually will carry it even when it's not raining, just because it's really dark and I tend to wear black.... being seen is a GOOD thing!

I keep thinking about modifying it with some of the EL wire so that I could have glowing stuff going along the ribs of it, too.

Better yet, the theme music shirt can be customized! You can add whatever you want, just need MP3s on your computer and a micro SD card.

And just by the way, did you know you could still buy a SLINKY? . . . oh dreadful nostalgia.

I bought one maybe ten years ago; it lives in a box in my kitchen and comes out periodically so I can make its coils lollop from one hand to the other. Playing with a Slinky just suspends brain activity. They still show up in catalogs and they're still cheap, too.

I have just wasted 20 minutes browsing the ThinkGeek site. No excuses about looking for last-minute gifts, either. There's an all-too-apropos cartoon of Roz Chast's that describes labor-saving devices (book, nap, telephone, etc.); INTERNET should have been at the top of the list.

There is this incredible shop in Worthing which my mother and I went to last week - we managed to extract ourselves without buying anything, quite how, I do not know.

There were racing grannies and fighting grandpas and rubber ducks (lots of little ones for 45 p each) and rubber ducks wearing santa hats which I very nearly bought for my s-i-l (don't ask!), and slinkies and those magic Christmas trees we used to have in our stockings when we were little that you sit in a saucer of water and they blossom.... all sorts of highly nostalgic things!

Have you seen Clocky? If you don't get up the first time, it rolls off your bedside table and hides while continuing to bleep. And it doesn't say this on the page, but I believe it's smart enough to never hide in the same place for two days in a row. This is eeeevil but so brilliant.

Hahaaa! I was JUST about to mention it myself. I keep thinking about getting one, but a) my room is such a mess it'd die, and b) I keep holding out for a fuzzy one like the prototype.

Ooooh! I've been waiting and waiting for that to hit the market ever since I heard about the MIT kids. Mind you, I probably don't need one any more, since my way of dealing with needing to get up in the morning was to shift my work day a couple of hours later. But such a good present...

I hope there was retribution involved after that one!!

Kind of like waking in the early morning, whilst using the top bunk, and seeing a Huntsman spider 2 feet from my face on the ceiling. I am not arachnophobic but I got out of bed fast. And told it off very sternly.

Ever had the experience of thinking that a spider was crawling on you in the night and managing to leap out of bed in about 1 nanosecond as you simultaneously throw back the doona and turn on the light? And then you remember to breathe when there is nothing there.......

I remember even more vividly the times when there WAS something there. Although your Huntsman spiders freak me out big time. If I ever threw the sheets back and . . . Dear Mrs. Redboots you have just brought up something I always have questions about (never having had a class in English grammar there are huge gaps in my education and having done copious amounts of Grammar in Modern and Ancient Greek, French and German does not always help). You say in Montague street, but on the same side of the road. Why not on the street? I have similar questions about places like born in Athens but if it is an island are you born on Skye rather than in Skye? and should you put it as on the island of Skye as this isn't a specific location. I figure if you don't know - or can't be bothered to answer (I mean this without any offense at all) one of the numerous English majors on this forum will provide me with an answer.

And having recently re-read Sunshine and re-read it yet again (thank you so much Southdowner!) I came across another language question/irritation that I would also like an answer for: It is the S.O.F. so ESS-OW-EFF. When talking about one of its officers is it a SOF or should it be an ESS-OW-EFF. Because I would say the latter (I'm not trying to be cheeky Robin - I'm genuinely stymied by this). Does the euphonic -n- get added on here or not? Anyone?

I think the preposition depends on the dialect. Over here, it would be on Montague St. I think of in Montague St. as very British.

The way I was taught, if the S.O.F. (no idea what it stands for!Embarassed) is pronounced Ess Oh Eff, you would use "an S.O.F.," while if it's pronounced "Sof," you wouldn't.

You say in Montague street, but on the same side of the road. Why not on the street?

I'd agree with Kathy_S that this is a matter of local usage. I've never heard American usage refer to a location as "in" a street. I think of the phrases "waiting in line" vs. "waiting on line" --although I now hear people here saying "on line" also; is this an affectation?--or "fill in a form" vs. "fill up a form" as similar examples.

Hmmm - I imagine this is American vs British usage; it's weird, though, because, thinking about it, I'd say I lived on Montague Street (if I did!), but that a shop is in it. Erm, why? Blest if I know!

"And in the same post"

And having recently re-read Sunshine and re-read it yet again (thank you so much Southdowner!) I came across another language question/irritation that I would also like an answer for: It is the S.O.F. so ESS-OW-EFF. When talking about one of its officers is it a SOF or should it be an ESS-OW-EFF. Because I would say the latter (I'm not trying to be cheeky Robin - I'm genuinely stymied by this). Does the euphonic -n- get added on here or not? Anyone?

I wouldn't, but then, I mentally read it as "a SOF", and have to remind myself that it's Special Other Forces and not Streatham Open Festival (a former ice-skating competition, which was called "sof" - word, not initials).
