I've tried several times in several ways over the past year or two to get a picture to the right size to use as an avatar. I KNOW there's an easier way to do this, but I can't find the right program and don't seem to have ANYTHING on my computer right now. Could someone maybe give me some helpful advice or wisdom?

Try this:
http://www.resizeyourimage.com/
Use the zoom (-) to make it small enough, then set size.
Let me know how it works for you.

If you want to make one from your own picture, have you tried the site recommended in this post?
Otherwise, you could look for a prefab icon that's already sized right. The size we use is pretty standard, so if you look for icons made for Facebook, Tumblr, LiveJournal, etc, they should work fine. One LJ maker of delightfully weird and well-done icons that I like is Iconomicon.
ETA: Blogmom beat me to it! You can try her site, too.

Looks like it worked! Thanks! I want to go around posting everywhere so I can look at this picture of my wonderful cats! (Not the best picture ever, but I can leave it for awhile and use another later if I need to)
