When someone thousands of miles away shivers at "the cold spot"...you did it again. Even in writing-for-fun you can't be other than an incredible writer.
Gus is wonderful.

I kind of just want to hug Serena, there's a little sadness to her that I hadn't caught before, or maybe she only lets it show when she's at home (or maybe she just really, really wanted hummus, but I don't think that's it). I am, however, quite curious about what type of artist she is. As for the basket of yarn, watch out, Kes, there is knitting in your future!
I still like Gus, he's going to be fun and interesting and enjoy getting to grips with Kes's garden.
And the cold spot entertains me, I love the idea of Gus and Serena sitting in it in summer. I'm the sort of person who, in that situation, would include a mattress and sleep in it.

Which was plenty big enough for four—possibly with the caveat that no more than two of them were teenage boys, and that the piles of books and magazines did not creep any farther out from the wall. There was a basket of yarn on top of the tallest pile.
This made me giggle loudly in my frightfully tidy kitchen, which really is a delightful experience.
The house my best friend grew up in was this gorgeous, mostly-except-for-the-bits-that-had-to-be-rebuilt-after-a-fi re antebellum place with at least one ghost. They'd had about three years of the timer on the stove going off at 3:22 every morning. Or not quite every morning. Just often enough for it to be a real pain, not often enough for them to get used to it. Finally one morning, her mother, slippered and sleep deprived, said to the kitchen, "We really, really need you to stop doing this." The timer hasn't worked since (and repair people have looked and said there's nothing wrong with it) but it also doesn't go off in the middle of the night.
And I love Gus. Especially that he can feel sheepish. And loves whacking at things. Nice.

Serena backstory, yay!
Serena's self-doubts are sadly familiar to me, alas and alack. And I can't wait to see her work through Kes' eyes.

I also love this line. Suddenly, I'm getting the sort of delightful feeling from reading Jasper Fforde's The Eyre Affair; the dawning realization of how fun it is to inhabit, however temporary, a world where popular culture just seems to Make Sense.
I like to imagine that, whatever else is wrong with this fictional world, it at least has one virtue: Stephanie Meyers was never published.

Or if she has, maybe it's because she was sleeping with her agent. And publisher ;P
Gus seems like one of those teenagers who give reassurance, that maybe the next generation isn't totally a lost cause.
Really looking forward to 'seeing' Serena's work!

Gus could be a good friend to my sons; I wish there was a real-life equivalent of Gus here to be buddies with my younger son. That's how much I like Gus.
Yeah. This story is so good; I enjoy each segment. When I have a little more time (I'm helping to organize a mini-con at my local public library on Saturday), I plan to go back and reread the story up to now. So good ...

Oh, yes indeedy! I want to play with Serena's workshop, too!

Falling in love with Serena's cave (there is, at the moment, a bead & wire dragon made by a friend on my computer monitor, leaning over the front at me, wings spread, front claws clinging to the edge. A carved wooden turtle on the computer tower itself. But I didn't make them. They just help around the story edges.

I would love to have a play with so many of Serena's things, that whole room just sounds amazing.
And we work that whole help with your own presents thing in my family, it usually means you get something even better than what either person could have managed on their own. Oddly, all the times that stick out in my memory involved earrings.
