I read Hero first, but it was Outlaws that made me the collector that I am today. My daughter just selected Hero as her reading club prize and I can't wait for her to read it. I love them all, but it's Outlaws that I reread every year. It's the book I turn to after a really bad day.

Read the best books first, or you may not have a chance to read them at all. - Henry David Thoreau

My Mom got me H & C for my 12th birthday. I liked her OK, but it was Beauty that I read the next summer that really got me interested in McKinley as an author.

BTW because I read H&C first, I never could get Harry's Damar and Arin's to match up. Arin's always feels European when I read it while Harry's has no trouble being middle eastern.

I would like to read another tall heroine again, Harry and Arin were both real helps to me growing into my height

Hero and the Crown was my first book by Ms. Mckinley........Adored it so much that I have read it and The Blue Sword about 10 times each. Still by far my favorite book.

I can't remember now if it was the Blue Sword or Beauty - picked them both up at a similar time in a cheap paperback copy - and wore both copies outwithin a year or so. I now own at least 4 copies of Beauty and 3 of Blue Sword - and they're all getting a bit tattered too with the endless re-reading!

I remember working through the non-fiction part of the library (fairy tales and retellings) and reading Beauty in one night. Such a wonderful story.

I'm still not sure if I had read Blue Sword or Hero and the Crown prior to that, though.

Then, a few years ago, I realized who the author of one of my beloved childhood storybooks was:

I was visiting Houghton, MI last week and went walking by its new library. I remembered how I'd checked out THE HERO AND THE CROWN and THE BLUE SWORD and read them both for the first time on one rainy Saturday. So I walked in and paid them a visit.

My mom has been making me go through all my old schoolwork she's been saving for years. Turns out I did a book report on Blue Sword in 4th grade - likely the first time I read it. Smile

Ah, just goes to show how important it is to read the directions first! I voted Spindle's End, because I think that was technically the first one I ever read, but I think Hero and the Crown is the one that really made me a McKinley fan. Though, heck, maybe I should have voted for Dragonhaven—discovering that book last summer got me BACK into Robin McKinley and got me reading all of her books that I'd missed over the years.

My first Robin McKinley book was Beauty. I discovered it at my high school library when I had a craving for faerie stories. I think I read it through once or twice, but it wasn't until I picked up The Blue Sword and read it that I actively began hunting down other books she'd written.

For me, it was The Blue Sword - I happened upon it in the school library when I was in 6th grade and that started my lifelong RMcK addiction... It's still one of my favorite books of all time, although so many of her books make my top 100 list it borders on unreasonable, LOL.

BRING ON DAMAR BOOK THE THIRD!!!!! Smile

Hmmm... Although, taking the poll I saw Door in the Hedge and realized I can't remember a time I ever DIDN'T own that book, so maybe that was my first...

I've been missing out for years! The first Mckinley book I read was when my friend sent me a copy of Deerskin as a gift this September. I thought it was wonderful, so I tracked down and read most of her other books over the last few months Smile

The Hero and the Crown, for me. My English teacher took us to the library to pick out books for a book report. I was trying to decide between reading that or another book. I'm so glad I chose Hero! I read it straight through in one day, went "Wow," and flipped back to the beginning to start again.

The next time I was in a bookstore I picked up a copy of Hero and Rose Daughter.

My first exposure to Robin's books was Christmas 2005 (a few months into sixth grade), when I got a boxed set with The Hero and the Crown,The Blue Sword, and Spindle's End. I don't remember which one I read first (though Spindle's End is the most beat-up), but that's when I got hooked.
