Has everyone seen NPR's call for nominations this morning? The list is for YA fiction this year. I nominated The Blue Sword and Hero and the Crown from Robin, along with some others. I'm debating doing a second post to include more of my favorites but I'm not sure if it's allowed.

The results are available, and Blue Sword and Hero and the Crown both made the Top 100. The higher numbered books were mostly the much newer titles.

I suppose that was to be expected, really, when one comes to think of it. That's why this kind of thing isn't such a reliable indicator of - well, more than what people at this moment are reading - but it can still be a fun exercise, if not taken too seriously. Smile

ETA - Suddenly struck me, that we're all felines here - one way or the other. Smile

Hey, I don't quite have a feline for this thread, but I imagine that my griffin comes fairly close.

I'm still shaking my head about some of the books that were included on this list. The decision to include books "that young adults have embraced" is ridiculous. While I would definitely classify the HARRY POTTER books as YA since Harry aged into his teens, the inclusion of THE DARK IS RISING is a middle grade series by just about any standard.

And on the other side of the spectrum - all the adult books; LOTR, Hitchhiker, Princess Bride... ? They are great, and I'm glad they're still popular, but not really YA, yes?

Except that I first experienced and fell in love with all of those before I was 15. What qualifies as YA?

Well, when I was around 15 I read Thackeray's "Vanity Fair" - among other things - for the first time; does this then make it YA as well? I suppose one can discuss what makes a book Young Adult versus merely Adult. But still... I don't doubt that there are people who read "War and Peace" at an early age - I did not - but that doesn't make it YA, I think. Anyway, I don't think it matters terribly, it's just worth noting - I suppose there are people who consider YA an accolade, just as there are people who use the word as disparagement - "oh, it's too YA!" (this generally if a - modern - adult book doesn't contain enough "adult material") - for me, it's just a category. I personally don't care what age group a book is meant for - if I enjoy it, I will read it. Just as I read some adult books when I was younger, I not only still read YA - I read MG and children's, and whenever I feel like it, I'll even read a picture book or two - solely for my own reading pleasure. I read "Wind in the Willows" and "Mary Poppins" first as an adult - does that then make these adult novels? I think not. But, as I said, for me, it's just a category, and carries no extra meaning whatsoever.

In this case, however, I suppose, though, that including MG and adult novels on the list, actually pushes out more "legitimate" YA off the list. Personally, the list doesn't mean much to me, but I just thought it was worth mentioning/noting - that's all. Smile

I think that's a worthwhile concern. I guess the question is really what the intent of this list is -- is it intended to provide suggested reading? Or simply to honor books in a given genre? If suggested reading, I'd argue that the inclusion of appropriate-but-not-specifically-YA books (LotR, etc.) is entirely appropriate. If the intent is more about honoring YA genre books, then a more exclusionary definition would have been appropriate.
