I was expecting something quite different -- something, well, alive, for a start, and probably malignant. This is much better! And I'm beginning to quite like Hayley. If she can like good literature and be an awestruck fangirl and be savage about inventories - and not kill herself in 4-inch heels - then she's a keeper!

And I cannot tell you how glad I was to find a new episode of Kes tonight when I got home from work. Why is it that the howling masses in general treat you as less than human if you work in food service? SO not a good day. Kes makes things better Smile

Second the "Kes makes things better." Yes. It was a day of catching up with things (and far too much time hunting down emails from one, two, and even three weeks ago, in the great mass of emails I foolishly keep, things that had to be answered or printed out or both.) Having Kes face down a monster coal & wood stove...perfect. Having Hayley annoyed....perfect.

I sort of get the feeling the stove (Caedmon?) is alive—though I, too, was expecting something more on the furry (and breathing) spectrum of living things.

Well, yes. It does give the impression of being at least somewhat sentient, doesn't it?

Caedmon! Yay! Smile

Clearly this stove, aside from heating and cooking, will also produce beautiful alliterative verse. Smile

On our return journey I tried to pretend that cows in a field right next to the road where you could see how gigantic they were was normal and ordinary

Heh. Talking of gigantic, it's a good thing there weren't any bulls in that field . . .

I love the name of her house! I'm also wondering (through shades of Rose Daughter) just how many rose bushes she's going to find in that garden... (lots? Lots would be good!)

The power of Kes is such that I used her as a quite excellent get-out-of-bed carrot. Get yourself, up, dressed, dog walked and off to the station in good time for the train and you shall have a new episode!

Oboy! More Kes.

And Sally...well. Prepared to hate her and suddenly she's a sympathetic character...maybe. Gardening magazines? And Kes has that rosebush in the van? Needlepoint? There's nothing in fantasy books that rules out roses, gardening, and needlework of any kind. Hmmm.

Plus the Caedmon mystery. Maybe Caedmon only manifests when someone arrives it/he approves of?

+1

I haven't been posting much here because pretty much everyone else beats me to it. But know that even though I'm not saying it, I am very much enjoying these episodes, and am very glad you decided to start them Smile

Dear Kes,

Thank you so for these adventures. I love you attitude and your sharp wit. You never fail to bring a smile to my face, and considering my un-pollyanne life at the moment, it means a lot.

Danke, Takk, Merci,

Yes, that was the exact same thought I had! And I liked that she admitted it out loud.

Yay for Kes!

Kes is meeting a whole load of interesting people in her new neighbourhood. I wonder if the book that kept Lena up past midnight is one of Kes's books. I'm so happy every time I see a new episode posted.

My favorite part of episode 26 was this:

A machine at the back of the room made a noise surprisingly like arrrrgh and started chomping out a page with printing on it.

I know this printer! It must be a cousin to the one at my office, which despite billing itself as a giant machine that can do anything you want, chokes if you ask it to print more than 10 pages. It's somewhat inconvenient, as we often use it for large stacks of fliers and handouts.

You know, I didn't even notice--in episode 25--that we hadn't yet learned that the house was called Rose Manor. I think I was sort of unconsciously expecting it all along Smile

I am probably deranged or bonkers or something, but having just been staring at the pictures equus_peduus posted of the organ in her guest posts, I can't quite shake the feeling that the organ and Caedmon the stove may have some sort of kinship.

No, come on, it's not as mad as it sounds. See, the thing is .... Oh, OK, it's totally mad.
