I cast my mind back, and I think I’ve always hated my printers, which live** to find reasons to refuse to print
I have NO COMPLAINTS about my printer (and I hope it somehow gets this message and appreciates the sentiment), but when I think of various printers of the past, I entirely uinderstand and agree with this sentiment. Anyone old enough to remember the daisy-wheel printer will recall that they ALWAYS sounded broken, even when they worked, this making it impossible to know whether they were broken or not when print failed to emerge. In my professional life, I have had experience of printers that required four hours of work by a field engineer to clear a paper jam (and the printer I'm thinking of rather liked paper jams). It's really too bad that we can't get around these problems by leaving out a saucer of milk (or maybe strong spirits) for a brownie.

Okay, that's probably the funniest thing I've seen in... well, in a good long while. And certainly has a 'funny because it's true' quality to it. Let the rampant sharing elsewhere begin!

I would love to read a transcript of how you finally diagnosed that! And seeing as you're in England, that meant you could print, what, two weeks at the end of October, right? Maybe once in February?

The process we went through could be classified as experiential learning.
BTW, for anyone who wants a bit of Robin's back history with printers (and software generally) I think her description of a previous run-in, here*, with her computer and printer, is one of the funniest things I've read. But then I'm warped and scarred by having used computers for 30 years.

Well, having MET Robin's printer, and fallen foul of some of its little 'quirks', I can definitely vouch for the fact that it is, in fact, possessed by demons, and likes to live dangerously! (I seem to recall offering to teach it to fly on at least one occasion....)
I hope the little ratbag has decided to behave itself now, Robin?
(if not, I think I can find a sledgehammer for you to borrow? Or I could follow through on that offer of flying lessons if you like?)

Hence the *probably*! And at least if there are "interesting" occurences involving a viola (or violist), I'll know there was a violist in the vicinity of the story creation. For example, I'd always rather hear bad viola jokes from another violist than hearing the same worn-out jokes presented as new&funny from a non-violist! So, maybe Kes viola mayhem would count the same way.
Get the violinist!

As for printers - I submit for consideration the braille printer I had at work (when I was working for a local branch of the Swedish association for the visually disabled). When it was out of paper it kept repeating "OUT. OF. PAPER" - pause - "OUT. OF. PAPER" And the first time I hadn't even been "introduced" to it (I'd been on sick-leave - long story) so I didn't even know how it worked (it turned out later that, having no idea that there was a lever to loosen the paper - slot? - I'd somehow managed to feed it paper in a way that wasn't supposed to work... ), and I had no idea where the paper was either. And it kept on and on with its eternal "OUT. OF. PAPER" And frantically searching I said, testily, to it: "All right, all right, I'm looking for it, you stupid machine!" - I even desperately run to it to see if there was a "Shut up"-button. Alas, there was not.
Also, was the thing noisy? If having to take the phone while it was working, I had to hold my hand to my ear to be able to make out anything of what was being said to me... Thankfully we soon got a hood for it - thereby, no doubt, saving my sanity...
Why, I feel all thin, sort of stretched, if you know what I mean, like butter that has been scraped over too much bread.

A couple years ago, the (then new) Northern California Viola Society had ViolaMania, which, among other things, involved tellings of many viola jokes. Very funny.
Another thing it involved was an attempt at a world record number of violists playing the Telemann (the orchestra part was rearranged for a chamber group of violists, and the solo part was played by anybody who cared to bring a viola to the event). Unfortunately, they had so many more violists come that they forgot to count us all... but we're pretty sure it was world record breaking - something on the order of 150 violists - apparently someone in New Zealand (I think they said) did something similar and had fewer (though I forget how many the "fewer" was).
(There will be another ViolaMania this October, I think (it unfortunately doesn't coincide with my planned familial visit) - I can get people info if they want it. I don't think it's going to involve a group play like that, though it might - I haven't paid attention to the details since I won't be around.)
