Welcome, Fox, good to see you here. I'm sure you'll pick up on the culture of the forum quite easily but if there's anything you'd like to clarify, or need help with, you can either PM one of the mods if it's private or put the question into the Moderators' area. Have fun. Smile

Hi Everyone,
I've been a member for quite awhile now, but disappeared off the boards in August of 2010. I figured it's been long enough that I should remind you all who I am and introduce myself to new members who may have joined in my absence.
I'm Laura (creative handle, I know). I am an ex-actor who is now a student currently in the middle of medical school applications. I just had my first interview at the University of Colorado!
I love to knit and crochet, but my last project was over a year ago when my niece was born and I made her a baby blanket. Sad Organic Chemistry really sucked away all my free time. (I couldn't even make the PRC at Denver's Tattered Cover last year because of an O Chem exam!)
I've been a fan of Robin's since my 5th grade teacher messed up my book fair order and let me choose one of the books she'd ordered for the classroom, and I picked her copy of Beauty.
Anyway, it's nice to be back.

Nice to have you back, Laura! Smile I was reading an old thread (on Pollyanna), and did think that "I haven't seen Laura around lately, have I?" - but I'm bad at keeping track of time - but it was fun to see your posts starting to crop up almost immediately after that. Smile

Oh my gosh, you have no idea how nice it is to read that someone actually noticed I was gone. LOL. I'm just amazed to have tiny bits of free time again. I mean, I don't have tons. But Biochem and Statistics, which I'm taking now, have NOTHING on taking Honors O Chem and Physics concurrently. And applying to med school.

All right, I VANISHED for about nine months (no, not that kind of nine months) and I think I'm back -- and happy to be here! I don't remember what I was last time I was here, but I'm currently eighteen, a college sophomore (history and opera major), McKinley reader for half of this lifetime, and proposed writer of magic realist short fictions. We'll see about that one.

Hello! I've just discovered this thread after posting randomly around the forums. Thought I'd say Hi!

Like most others on these forums, I'm a keen reader, although I don't get through nearly as many books these days (middle-age, alas) as I used to when I was younger. Back then, I used to (inwardly) scoff at those who said they didn't find the time for reading as much any more. My feeling used to be that REAL readers FOUND the time. Now ... well, I still find SOME time, just not as much as before.

I like gardens, and having a nice garden, and some parts of actual gardening (mowing the lawn is always soothing), but being a bit lazy I prefer sitting in my garden to terribly active gardening. I. CAN'T. BEAR. SLUGS!!!

I decided to be Mockorange on the forums because a) I like the plant for itself, and b) the one in my parents' garden was always in full bloom on my birthday, so there are multiple pictures of me throughout my childhood, teens, twenties and thirties, standing in front of the mockorange for my 'official' birthday photograph.

Alas, my parents moved from that house about 10 years ago now and their new mockorange, carefully selected from the nursery, although a large and vigorous shrub, only puts out a pitiful handful of flowers each year. Still, I have my own mockorange now so I can't complain.

It's good to meet you formally, Mockorange. I hope you continue to enjoy yourself around here. Smile

Philadelphus does have a gorgeous scent, doesn't it. I enjoy gardening, too.

Hi

I'm Cori and I've been reading Robin McKinley since I was little, but it was during the teen years that she became so essential to my life. It might be tmi but her books are the only ones I can count on to distract me enough to forget about monthly pains. I joined the forum because my friend who introduced me to Robin's books has been reading the blog for a while and follows Robin on twitter. To be honest, I'm planning to use her blog, etc for an essay in my Publishing Cultures class. I want to talk about how culturally authors have become more accessible ("Meet the author" culture). If anyone has any opinions particular to Robin's blog in regards to that, I'd really appreciate fresh thoughts. I haven't got a fully formed plan yet.

Hi! I'm a newly reactivated member--I've been reading the blog for several years and I used to have an account, but then I didn't log in regularly enough so it got deleted...but now I have this new account and am striving to be a little more active in the forum so that it stays activated! I just found this thread and thought I'd say hello. I'm a very happily married US Air Force wife, reader, writer, gluten-free baker (I have celiac) and video gamer.

I first found Robin McKinley's work when I was 12 or so, browsing the Newbery Honor shelf at the library. I picked up this book and looked at the cover and knew instantly that it was going to be fabulous: GIRL WITH A SWORD. AND IT'S BLUE (favorite color). And there's a horse! I think all 12-year-old girls are a little horse-crazy. Smile Well I devoured it, and that led me to HERO, and then all the rest.

When I was going to Brigham Young University studying English, I took a Creative Writing: Sci-fi/Fantasy class from Brandon Sanderson (MISTBORN, WHEEL OF TIME conclusion, etc.). Once while he was giving a lecture on balancing world-building without info-dumping, I thought of SPINDLE'S END and mentioned to him that it seemed like Robin McKinley broke many of his "rules" and still came out with a successful, enthralling book.
He said, simply, that Robin McKinley was an exception to the rules and that we shouldn't hope to get the same results as her. Sorry, just thought that was funny and worth sharing. Smile

Hi, all! Obviously, I'm new here, so I thought I would give a 'hello!' The first book I read by Robin was The Hero and the Crown, and I have been reading her books ever since. I just recently finished Pegasus, and I can't wait for the second book! (Wow, what a cliff hanger!) On the back flap of the book is where I discovered Robin had a blog, and therefore a forum. I couldn't resist checking it out, so here I am!

Hi Aiko! Love your picture! Is that from "Skip Beat!"? I love that manga...and anime. Smile Do you have a favorite McKinley book? Mine is "The Blue Sword" because I read that one first and fell in love with Damar, with "The Hero and the Crown" as a close second.

Thank you for the welcome, Sarah. And yes! It is Skip Beat! ^_^

Oh. I honestly don't know if I could choose just one!

I love the Hero and the Crown. The Blue Sword is probably my favorite from that series though. I can't pick which book I like more between Rose Daughter and Beauty. I have yet to read Spindles End. Deerskin was wonderful! I am very much so into Pegasus right now though. Ebon is so fantastic!

Hi all!

I've been lurking for a while and decided to come out of the woodwork. I got hooked on Robin's books with 'Beauty and the Beast' (still one of my favourites). 'Sunshine' is right up there too.

For myself, I play the guitar and teach, and also love handwork, tatting in particular (lacemaking, not tattoing).

Hi,

I'm not exactly new to the forum, but I haven't really posted yet. I do love reading the blog and the comments from the forum that Robin posts there Smile

Actually, I was sort of hoping that someone had a list of the 'real' books that Sunshine mentions--I tracked Carmilla down this year, but I'm having trouble remembering the others. I think one might have been Immortal Beloved, but it doesn't really come up in basic web searches (except for stuff related to Beethoven).

Any help would be appreciated Smile Thanks!

Hi, I'm Ringlets Smile I've been lurking for a while but I thought I'd better hunt down an intro thread before I post.. so here I am .
I'm married, live in the UK (although I would prefer Italy!), and we have horses and kitties (which is sortof what my job is - looking after them, and hubby of course Razz ) . My hobbies are reading , writing, drawing, painitng, horse riding, travel, photography, cooking, collecting stuff ... i have lots of hobbies really *blush*
I only recenlty discovered Robins books when my best friend sent me a copy of Deerskin in September. It has been one of her fave books for years, and she thought I might like it. I did! I thought it was awesome and so I've read my way through most of Robins other books over the last couple of months and have a pile of them on my bedside table. Its hard to pick a fave, although I just finished Chalice , and that has to be one of my faves for sure.
Ok.. I think I talk to much, and now I have to figure out how to post an avvie and use smilies and everything.. (computers are soo not my strong point , and my laptop is a dinosaur!), so bye for now!

Hello, I'm Carafin!
I don't really know what to post here...
I'm a fan of Robin's work (obviously!), and I also enjoy reading other fantasy, Regency period romance, children's picture books, manga, and lots of other genres!

Other things I do: I like knitting(scarves!)! I have planted some things in the space behind my tiny apartment (I'm not sure if that counts as gardening, because I don't know if they'll survive). I do a bit of bouldering (indoors). Whenever I get the chance I go ballroom or salsa dancing!

Right now I'm teaching English in Japan. Following the blog (especially Kes) gives me my McKinley fix, since I was foolish and brought only two of her books with me; (halfway around the world, mind you, but still...) I should have made room for all of them...
Nice to (sort of) meet you!
