What a charming dog. Happiest of endings hoped for.
As I think about your cats I am reminded of a photo of a tribe of cats (mixed sizes, ages, markings) headed straight at the photographer taken from cat's eye level with very serious looks on their faces.
I imagine a thought bubble above their heads "Okay, dog, it's like this ..."
Lovely countryside too ... when I traveled to Bergen it was misty, with periods of rain, and required fleece as well as rain gear ... in August. I'd love to do that train ride in the sun someday! I hope the travel anxiety gave you a break now and then to enjoy the scenery.

I'm still working on getting them used to each other, so far I have managed to prevent Gaius from chasing the cats, and Oscar from attacking "the intruder". Of course, dogs have no conception of personal space, while cats are very insistent on respect for theirs. There have been quite a few ugly looks and slashing tails from the cats while Gaius tries to sniff them all over, but I manage to intervene before matters come to a boiling point.

I remember that many years ago, my brother (a cat person) kept our dogs while we were in the midst of a job transfer and waiting for a house to be built. His cat spent most of that time on top of the refrigerator. My brother eventually got tired of having critters that needed more attention than cats, and we had to collect the dogs and kennel them for a month. I'm sure his cat was doing pirouettes as we drove away.
