I haven't posted in what feels like FOREVER, because I have been chasing after a number of things that are both faster and smarter than I, but I ask for your thoughts, prayers, lit candles - however you hold someone in your heart.
My 10-month-old niece, Audrey, had a stroke this weekend. Yup - a STROKE. A gorgeous, laughing baby who just days ago was actively crawling around and pulling herself vertically up the furnishings now has no movement on her left side. She can no longer sit up, cannot crawl.
The good news is that because she is so young, and her brain is so elastic, she can probably recover most if not all movement, with agressive physical therapy. But, blood tests this morning have indicated that she probably has an autoimmune disease related to lupus which causes the blood to clot too much, and this is more than likely what caused the stroke. They had originally been intending to send her home, but now will keep her in PICU until they decide on a plan and/or treatment.
My sister-in-law posted a photo of her that she had taken in the hospital this morning...and, Audrey is as happy and smiling as ever. Her face is still mostly symmetrical when she smiles.
My heart hurts thinking about this little baby, and the struggles ahead for her and her family. All your thoughts and prayers and lit candles are much, much appreciated.
Thank you all.

An update on 10-month-old Audrey...
Audrey is doing better...much better than a full-grown adult would be at this point in time, I daresay. She has gone from having nothing on her left side and being unable to sit up or crawl, to being able to sit up for a few minutes at a time, and to scooting around on her belly. Her left leg is showing some movement. Her face is symmetrical when she smiles, the left side droops otherwise. Her left arm is still not functioning. She's been moved from the hospital to inpatient rehab, and is doing very well, say the nurses and such.
The casue appears to NOT be a clotting disorder, which is VERY good news. Audrey has had a number of ear infections, and apparently the way some children's brains respond to recurrent infection is to stroke. I did not know this, but in the infant stroke population, recurrent infection is a fairly common cause.
THANK YOU for all the thoughts, prayers and lit candles. I believe in all that positive energy!
Jeanne Marie
