And I’ll tell you the story of the three Maine tourmalines in my twentieth-anniversary ring tomorrow. Unless, of course, I get distracted again.

Ohh, pretty. And a story besides! May SHADOWS go smoothly tomorrow, you meet no off leash dogs on your hurtle, and the weather not demand great runnings around with pots. You'll have nothing to blog about but the story. I love stories.

Beautiful ring . . . is it spooky like your anniversary story jewelry? Smile

I love this blog, but why don't you take a break from it until your deadline is past? We'd rather have you sane and productive as a writer than completely stressed out! We can look forward and eagerly anticipate your return.

Yes...will miss this being my nightcap reading every night, but being under the deadline guillotine myself (and having cut off other things so I don't collapse in a gibbering heap, quite) I wish you every second of productive time you can manage, and some hours of sleep as well. If you need a break from the blog, take it. All weeping and wailing will be far away from you, yourself, and the book...and when you return we will all rejoice. (Not that I have a right to speak for anyone but myself...)

Your ring is beautiful. Isn't it nice when one's husband knows how to give one jewelry? Smile

And I know robins—ahem!—are known to sing after dark, but what else is there that sings in the middle of the frelling night?

Bloody mockingbirds. Three a.m. means nothing to them. Of course we don't have them in Minnesota, so I can't blame them when *I* see three a.m. . . .

I'm not sure if you have street lights anywhere near you, but it's quite common for some birds - blackbirds, particularly - to sit near the lights at night and sing. And as blackbirds are also among the first to nest each year, so they're pairing-up now, that may well be a male blackbird starting to proclaim his territory that you're hearing in the early hours.

WOW. That was a koala? It sounds like something really dangerous, somehow... I was imagining more a leopard or something!

In Southern California, it would definitely be mockingbirds. However, they don't really kick in for a month or so yet. The parrots tend to reserve their squawking for dawn and dusk.

Sigh. I'm in that time frame where I should prune my roses, but they're still blooming......

I envy you your husband in his lovely choices of presents. Mine has to be told what to buy me (but then, to be fair, he does!). A lovely ring.

And I would assume a blackbird - we are having them here in London, too.

But the other night I was staying with my parents, in Sussex, and I heard an owl. I was almost sure it was an owl, not my own breathing (it sort-of woke me up), but I haven't heard one there since my childhood - it used to frighten my brother half to death when he was little. But when we went out to the car to come home to London, the owl swooped overhead (and yes, of course I thought of the poem in PEGASUS about "The owl swoops/The mice go "Oops"!).

We have owls around here, but I very rarely hear them. I'm afraid to turn on the koalas as I read this--midnight my time, and I don't want to wake up the dog--but I'll have to come back to them and see how they compare to raccoons, who get very noisy indeed in the spring.

How they compare to raccoons--extremely unfavorably, I'd say. That may be one of the most horrible animal sounds I've ever heard! Though I agree that raccoons in spring are right up there... Smile

Finally got to the koalas. (And kept the sound low, so the dog remained quiet.) They're very distinctive noisemakers, aren't they? Smile

Here in California, we're serenaded by mockingbirds all night. Like blackbirds, the males are competing for mates and the blokes that aren't getting any action sing on into the streetlight lit twilight in desperation. On the bright side, mockingbirds can sound like a symphony of bird calls! The music makes me think of Act I, Scene 1 in Hamlet when Marcellus says
Quote:

Some say that ever, 'gainst that season comes
Wherein our Saviour's birth is celebrated,
The bird of dawning singeth all night long;
And then, they say, no spirit dare stir abroad,
The nights are wholesome, then no planets strike,
No fairy takes, nor witch hath power to charm,
So hallow'd and so gracious is the time. (I.1.175-181)

Thank you- I'd been trying to remember which play that quote came from.

You're welcome! I'm a bit obsessed with Hamlet. When I taught it my class had a lot of fun putting Hamlet on trial. Smile
