I just finished a really good YA book called "The Princess and the Hound" by Mette Ivie Harrison. The story itself feels almost like a fairy tale retelling, except it's an original story. Anyway, I thought it was excellent and highly recommend it.

I liked it. There are 2 sequels, but I haven't read them.

I recently read Elizabeth Bunce's A Curse Dark as Gold which is a Rumpelstiltskin retelling. It was fantastic, and I absolutely loved it.

It starts a bit slow, spending time on the world building (as many McKinley books do) so if you appreciate that aspect, by all means, read this one. It's brilliant.

Jo Clayton's Skeen Trilogy. Highly inventive through all three books, enough ideas for a whole shelf of books. A female protagonist, tough as nails, on a quest that involves six different species, all with different cultures. What fun. Sometimes travelers sit down and exchange tales, which are short-shorts in themselves.

I just read Lord of the Changing Winds by Rachel Neumeier, which has pretty much cemented griffins in second place in my affections (behind dragons, that is, in the category of "preternatural creatures"—I don't think my Stig would appreciate being bumped off his perch by a bunch of imaginary flying beasts Wink )

I glomped down the whole book inside 24 hours, which used to be nothing unusual but these days is difficult to pull off what with all the distractions. I've reserved the next book (there's a trilogy) from the Library, and people on Goodreads say that's just as good.

Peter S. Beagle's Tamsin is one of the best ghost stories I've read. (His A Fine and Private Place is another.)

I read and enjoyed Patricia C Wrede's "Socrery and Cecilia or the Enchanted Chocolate Pot" and its sequel "The Grand Tour" last month and enjoyed them both as diverting reads told in letter format.
