Robin, I'd gladly say your iPhone4 isn't a horrible, gruesome mistake. Unfortunately, I have absolutely no experience/information to back up that statement.

Champagne bottles added to the goodies already offered to you.

I will also say it wasn't a mistake and I'm one of the people who helped finish convincing you. Just remember the initial RaspBerry learning curve and now you're fine with it. Also remember that you've done the trickiest route - moving an existing SIM card and account. I just moved my telephone number when I went from Verizon to AT&T. It should be just a question of getting Orange to talk to it properly. Gabriel will prevail I'm sure.

I'd hazard a guess and say it's not the phone. When I got my iPhone4 I didn't have service for over 24 hours. Why? AT&T lost my confirmation code. There is probably some delightful little gremlin gnawing away on the little blips and blops of code that connect your iPhone to all that is wonderful. All will be well soon, I'd be willing to bet.

As for the reception issue - it's a bunch of hooey. ANY electronic device that relies on radio waves to transmit signal is going to experience some minute degradation when said waves are trying to pass through water - which the human body mostly is. Ever squeezed a walkie talkie antenna while listening to a broadcast? The squelch you'd hear is the result of the same interference. And walkie talkies have much greater power than the average cellular device. There are a few mobile companies now threatening to sue Apple for demonstrating that their devices are plagued by the same issue.

Sorry for the novel there. It's just . . . my iPhone is my constant companion. We play games together, read books, traipse over the internet, and video chat with real people. Tra-la-la and all that. (I admit, I've fallen victim to anthropomorphising it a fair bit.) I guess I'd just hate to see someone not finding the fun in these brilliant little devices that I have and end up . . . hating it.

Maybe rub it with a bar of chocolate?

I'm told the antenna problem with the 4 can be fixed with a rubber band. My friend who has one, who's left-handed and ergo supposedly "prone" to the problem, hasn't had a blip with it yet. But he got the free case anyway. Smile

The deal is that, for the first time in the iPhone (and most current phones), the antennas are external. There are two, those metal bands that form the edge. They're actually 2 different lengths that start at the headphone jack and go around the phone to the left side gap. The gap on the right side is aesthetic only. One is for cell reception (the right and longer one), the other for Wifi, Bluetooth and GPS. The issue arises, for some people, when the conductive human being bridges the gap between the two antennas. All one needs is any non-conductive substance to cover that tiny gap. I liked a duct tape version but this is the best one - http://www.theepochtimes.com/n2/content/view/39478/. Smile

*joins the club*

I'm sitting here with my iPhone, one very soft and attentive cat, and I'm writing on an exceedingly ancient laptop whose demise I'm dreading simply because I'll feel like I've lost a family member. I tend to get attached.

Which is why I'm buying a case - not because I've had problems, but because I'd be devastated if I hurt my iPhone somehow. It's more than just an object to me: it's become a friend. Sad but true.

And I, too, am a geek. Smile

I've bought a really crappy $3 bumper type case to tide me over until Contour Designs _finally_ gets their new cases out. This no belt clip/can only wear bottoms with pockets is driving me nuts. I seem to be in the minority though in the desire for a separate belt clip because there are only a few options, so at least I have a source even they are being slow!

And me. I tend to get attached to things, too, though I do not have a cell phone at all -- the 21st century only has hold of me at work, where today I was informed that I am at long last being given a Very Fast, Stuffed-with-Memory, Dual Processing, just-this-side-of-the-Borg computer with which I could easily take over at least this half of the state, and I was thrilled. It is true that my current computer has crumpled beneath the weight of the jobs it is being asked to do simultaneously (I know the feeling), but I was still surprised by the vehemence of my reaction. "REALLY? REALLY TRULY??" I think I may have frightened the tech guy a little. Smile

Don’t ever try to tell me that technology isn’t self-aware and isn’t out to get us.

I've always felt that those folks working on artificial intelligence projects--as in seriously intelligent AI--have not given enough consideration to the thought that an AI might not be friendly and cooperative. Might, in fact, be malicious. Early indications might be all around us . . . Smile

Hope your problem has a simple and speedy remedy.

You're not feeling responsible, are you? I totally dug my own grave with this one. Smile (Also I have local friends with them so I've had the chance to HANDLE the beggars.) HOWEVER, signs of prevailing are beginning to show through the clouds. Even if Computer Men have to come back AGAIN if for nothing else than WiFi-ing the cottage. We're getting there. Smile I have every intention of making it a boon companion. (At its price the *top* of the list was 'boon companion'. It's like if you pay a lot of money for a car it BETTER BE FUN TO DRIVE and not merely get you from point A to point B. Smile)

One of the inexplicable things in this case is that about twelve hours after Gabriel left in defeat . . . it suddenly started getting a signal. Orange had said it would take up to TWO hours to get settled. Maybe it takes up to fourteen or so and they just don't want to admit it. And I'm assuming the epic patch Raphael slapped on it yesterday will have helped.

I'd love a belt clip (despite the uber-geek aspect) but I wouldn't be wearing it in an office but stuff like out hurtling hounds, and while this is a relatively safe area, that seems to me slightly asking for trouble. Gabriel even told me to buy some BLACK earphones, that it's a known thing that thieves target people wearing white ones because it means they're using an apple thing.

Since the tide-us-over case is PINK, she must be a she . . . she still doesn't have a name, and I AM starting to think in terms of my third hellhound. After all, the original hellhounds have alternate names: they don't *answer* to Darkness and Chaos (or at least . . . er . . . ) No reason she couldn't have an alternative name. Smile Emoon (I think) on Twitter suggested Apocalypse because she has aps and . . . Appy is a good name. Smile

Well . . . yes. I wonder if there are any other dog owners out there who were not so much amused as . . . appalled? I've been sent it several times because as a dog owner I guess I'm supposed to think it's hilarious. I see that it's funny. Sort of. But there's no way I would have allowed anything like this to happen. (Quite aside from the fact that hellhounds aren't really interested in FOOD. Once the elk was dead and not running away from them any more they would have LOST interest. Smile)
