Though your talk of "our times" makes me depressed - I don't think the 80s were such a long time ago! It makes me feel old... (Sniffle)

Aww! Now don't feel old; I'm only 5 years younger than you. I just meant that things have changed a lot, namely 9-11, and that changes what we fear. With the old V, the theme was how easily another holocaust could happen; in this incarnation, it seems to be about a fear of how easily we can be infiltrated by those who seem just like us.

So a bit about what I've actually been watching - I know, shocking! Smile - instead of what I intend to watch.

We've seen the second part of the B5 spin-off series Crusade - and I'm really enjoying it and the characters. This would be great, except the thing was axed after 13 episodes, and anyone familiar with B5 would know that by that time JMS has barely got started... And as I said, I already like it. This means that after episode 13 I'll probably be sobbing in my pillow and wailing "Why, why, why?!?"

And talking of axed shows, we are also watching Birds of Prey

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0312098/

and really enjoying it. Has anyone else here seen it? Presumably we must be nearing the end of the episodes by now (we're watching my taped cassettes and I haven't been counting), there can't be many left. I didn't expect it to be much good - it already having been axed and all, and trailers and so on not being high-hopes-inducing - but thought "why not?" and taped it anyway. And I really, really like it, and my husband is enjoying it too. I wonder if it was badly marketed or what happened?

We are also watching - I think - the second season of Andromeda, and that's also a show that we're liking much more than expected.

We also have recently seen 3.10 to Yuma with Russell Crowe and Christian Bale. Great.

And... but I think that is probably enough for one post. Smile

I loved Crusade! Possibly more than I loved B5. Which is a lot. And yes, you will be going 'Whyyyyy?!' at the end. But it's totally worth it!

Ditto! I need to find it again so my husband can see it now that we have finished watching all of B5.

No, not yet, but I'm planning to.

Seperating book and movie is always a good idea - but sometimes it just doesn't work, where you wonder, if they were going to change so much, either in plot or the tone of the movie - or not retain one single piece of original dialogue - why did they even bother dramatising that particular book? (I'm being deliberately vague, so I hope Pollyanna won't mind, since I'm not actually naming the objects of my wrath.) But yes, some changes are inevitable, and if the movie is something you would like independently of the book - to think that any adaptation will equal the book is putting oneself in the way of almost certain disappointment. Luckily though, one needn't choose, no adaptation is going to replace the book, after all. Smile

(Sorry for babbling, hopefully you can understand a bit of what I'm trying to say - I know what I mean, but conveying it in actual words is sometimes difficult!)

Yes it does become difficult to convey thoughts at times—especially when their more of a feeling.

Last night watched UP.

A little - really little - on the forthcoming Doctor Who: The End of Time:

An actor I worked with before I moved to OR showed up on NCIS last episode! Ralph Waite, who played Gibbs' father. He's a fantastic actor, though I would say film suits him better than live theatre does. I was really excited to see him, though.

I've never seen The Waltons, I was looking at his IMDB page the other day and saw that he apparently got Emmy nominations for it. He looks very, very different with color in his hair, too.

I've seen one with a shovel stuck in the snow and the coat hanging over it (also a reindeer misting up the camera). I never get tired of seeing the other one however many times it's on, it always makes me smile.

Watched the BBC airing of RSC's recent Hamlet (you know, the one with Tennant and Stewart in it). It is -amazing-. I dearly wish I could have seen it live, or better yet, worked on it. Fantastic performances by all the actors, great costumes, etc. and so forth. I believe the RSC is going to be releasing a DVD of it, planning to pick it up if they do. Seriously great theatre.

(Also watched the new Doctor Who, and looking forward to part 2 on New Years)

I'm hoping to do so myself one day (still working my way through stuff taped in - I think - August 2003 - and yet no sign of Doctor Who...)

Oh, lovely, isn't it?

My mother and I got ourselves that and the second season of Lark Rise to Candleford as gifts to ourselves.

I'm savouring it, and have only watched one episode so far - it's based on one of my favourite books. (Arthur Clennam has just been accidentally locked into the Marshalsea.)

Yes it is, really great—I just finished the 8th episode (second disc, from Netflix) and we don't have the third disc yet,
arrrggghhh—I probably won't have time to watch it until next saturday/sunday, even if it does come soon.

Well, tell yourself you're savouring it too. Smile

Of course I do have the advantage of having read the book five times... But on the other hand I'm watching Lark Rise with my mother who comes to visit once a week, and last Tuesday I was left dangling in the middle of the first (it was feature-length) episode, which turned out to be a ghost story... !
