I suppose posting the stupidest c/e queries would be rude. . . ?

American placemats are easier, if you remember: can buy 'em one at a time. But the pictures on the British ones are better.

Or anyway drinking champagne on an evening I don’t have to stay sober.***

That's as it should be.

I'm embarrassed to say that my reaction to waterproof cork-backed placemats was akin to my one about oven cloths--"Wait, what?" Placemats are cloth things you roll up and throw in the laundry when you spill on them, they're ALL washable and where would you put the cork? And then I looked at your picture. Oh, THOSE things. Smile

Oh Happy Day!

Good work Aaron, I'd say you've caught the spirit of this community.

I find the prettiest place mats of the type you describe in Scandinavian gift shops. They tend to have beautiful wildflowers on them.

I don't use them on the table but under pitchers of flowers and similar potentially drippy things.

As for my table, I've been restraining myself from ordering oilcloth from Gudrun Sjoden but I think the time may have come ...

Enjoy the three weeks until Pegasus returns to the full!

And I enlarged the second picture to see what kind of food (?) was in the containers/boxes in the upper left corner (crackers? biscuits? not food at all?).

Bravissima! Congrats! And I'm glad that champagne bottle said premier cru, as it is richly deserved. Hope the copyeditor finds PEGASUS to be the cleanest MS in publishing history so you can breeze through the end of January.

Peter keeps telling me, as I spill through the door at the mews with my latest meteorological complaints on my frozen lips, that when his kids were growing up they ice-skated at the local ponds every winter.

Even true statements have the ring of "I walked barefoot in the snow uphill both ways etc. etc." in response to complaints about the weather, and do nothing to improve either the situation or the complainer's attitude. I can assert absolutely that taking the dog out when it's -10 is not made any better by knowing that it is -27 in International Falls. (In fact it was -37 up there overnight, but that might have sounded like an exaggeration.) "I don't care!" is the only proper response. Smile

Those are supposed to be placemats? I had no idea that's what they were supposed to be for. My family has some of those things (not roses... I have no idea what the pictures are, though I think they're night scenes of some sort... my memory makes them out to be in various shades of dark blue, though I may be wrong, but I'm fairly sure they're all different pictures) - my mom mostly put them along the center of the table to put the serving dishes on. She hasn't done this in years, I expect they're in the back of a cupboard someplace. I think my grandmother has some as well (I want to say hers were/are greenish, though again, I couldn't swear to this - these may have been purged when they moved out of their house and into the retirement community...) but I can't recall what she did with them when in use - vague memories imply something to do with milk jugs on the breakfast table.

Are those things available in the States? I don't think I've seen them anywhere other than on my mother's or grandmother's tables (and now, apparently, Robin's) - my grandmother is English but has lived the last 40-odd years in Canada, and I expect my mother got hers from my grandmother (this is, btw, my paternal grandmother, as my mother is from a different continent entirely).

--

Congratulations on being almost done with Pegasus - and getting a break from working on it for a little while Smile Even if there's going to be a rather frantic period after the vacation...

Nice champagne flutes! And Congratulations too.
I look forward to drinking champagne again myself (postbaby). Or prosecco, which I really do like.
Regarding place mats, I've noticed that New Zealand has far greater range of cork-backed picture-place mats than the UK. Why this should be so I can't imagine, it's maybe the only product where this is the case.

Um - I think Peter's memories can't be of the South of England, where there hasn't been serious outdoor skating since 1963! If you remember your WINTER HOLIDAY, Nancy and Peggy can skate because they get a few days' practice every year on the smaller lakes and tarns in the Lake District, but the Walker children, coming from the South, have never had that opportunity.

Yes, aren't they pretty? The florist showed me how to WIRE the frellers, so now I use gerberas a lot. I never used to because their necks collapse. Wired they last almost forever (as cut flowers go).
