Not quite upright - but not quite horizontal either. Wink

Tenerife. Cape Verde. Maldives. No. None of them has bell towers.

*stuffs fist in mouth*

Oh, what the heck. Razz

Just so you know - weather is absolutely GLORIOUS here at the moment with clear blue sky, light breeze, 25C/77F and 3 bell towers within 100km. And the Mme Alfred is flowering again.

Just sayin'. Wink You will most certainly deserve a holiday once PEG 1 goes in. Very Happy

That's great. fell into step beside me and we pitoned and ice-axed our way up the alternate slope... just picturing it makes me smile.

It does sound good, "cramponed" is good too, and perhaps closer to the event. I have always liked the sound of "post holing" and "plunge stepping" as methods of moving in snow. I should admit that all of this is academic to me. I climb but crampons and ice-axes are part of the mountaineering end of the sport and I try to stay on the "warm granite, short pants*" end. There is a quote attributed to Isabelle Patissier to the effect that climbing in the mountains is bad because you have to "get up early and wear big clothes".

It's snowing here in mountainous Virginia. It was supposed to start at midnight. Started at 7pm. Forecast now predicts 13-24 inches. At least we'll have a White Christmas, right?

Wow! I noticed the forecast earlier and you're right; you're predicted to get dumped on. Hope you don't have to go anywhere and can just keep inside and enjoy the scenery. Stay warm!

No snow here in London. That I don't envy you - but I do envy you the duck! I hope it was really glorious and worth every single calorie many times over.

And I think I envy the pegasi their wings, so they never do have to walk on slippery roads and pavements!

And when the snow finishes with Virginia, it will eventually move north to the VT-MA
border, which is one mile away.

The weather guys keep warning us to be ready, but the fact that the temperature is rising might just make the snow worth it. When it is below 0 (F) the cold seems especially invasive.

Articulate, polite children can be so delightful, and I wish more of them grew up to be involved with writing, producing, directing, etc. TV and films so that folks might see that foul mouthed, sullen, mini adults pretending to be children are repulsive. There seems to be a misapprehension that well behaved children are repressed, but 25 years of dealing with about 400 per year convinced me that the well behaved are the confident ones who will probably grow up to be happy adults.

End of rant. Hope you're back on your feet literally and figuratively.

Snow shouldn't be finished with here until late tonight. Already had a foot fall and expecting another foot by evening. The rest of the body is expected to drop Christmas Eve. (Yes, MORE snow is predicted. I don't know if we're going to be able to travel on time this year.)

The cat is officially annoyed with us. The white stuff (which is over his head) is blocking his view of the backyard.

Edit: Okay, so we actually went and measured the snow. Twenty inches so far, and still falling hard. On the up side it's a light powdery snow so the lawn tractor can handle the five foot drifts.

Whups. Lost track of this thread. We had broadband AND snow. We had 18 inches here!

It's melting and turning slushy during the day here, but there's still quite a lot outside. It's very pretty! (Where the snowplows haven't turned it to slush.) We're supposed to get more on Thursday and Friday, so we'll have a white Christmas. My first ever!

Well, congrats on the white Christmas. I could do without it here in Hampshire, where they don't know how to DEAL WITH IT.

I cut south to Baltimore and west through West Virginia to come home from Massachusetts, to avoid having to deal with lake effect snow on the return route, and am so grateful that your big snow waited until I was gone. WV's mountains are steeper and scarier than western NY's. Winter held off for quite a while this year, but it's making up for lost time.

I drove the WV mountains earlier this year. In the rain, semis hurtling by like it was sunny.

It was a little terrifying. *g* I'm glad you had a safe trip over them!

I-70 was the only western route that was dry--I had great driving weather, which made a nice change from the trip east. Semis--don't get me started. They ride your bumper until it's clear you are not going to speed up, then zoom by and cover your windshield with snow so you can't see. Aaargh.

I hate. hate. hate. being passed by semis in snowstorms. Driving back 90 miles from a gig last Jan., I was passed by numerous semis. The snow was heavy enough that every time they passed me I was literally driving blind for about 15 seconds. I couldn't see *anything*. 15 seconds of blindness on an interstate highway is terrifying.

In all fairness, though, I've also had the experience of driving behind a semi for 50 miles or more in a snowstorm. He was going a little slower than I wanted to go, but I was thankful for the larger vehicle clearing the road.

(HInt: if you're going to be a musician, don't be one in the midwest United States. Winter gig driving is awful.)

Well I hope you're not having to do any travelling at the moment? The weather reports of the big snowstorm coming across the Mid-West look frightening!

Nope Smile I get to stay in one place for a few days. Hopefully long enough for some of the nastiness to go away.

Amazingly, it depends which bit of the midwest you're looking at. Smile Somehow all this snow has missed the central midwest almost completely... we're supposed to have pouring rain all night, tapering off tomorrow, and then maybe some vague flurries by Saturday. I'm dreaming of a Wet Christmas...

Meanwhile we will have a white one just north of Dallas. THis is unheard of. Snow, sometimes, but usually in late winter. Tuesday it was 70°F. Today, this.

I think this turkey is tracking too far north to hit you. We've had 8-9 inches of snow so far, deeper in the drifts, and are supposed to end up with another 10 or so. Hopefully none of it mixed with freezing rain--it's not very cold. This is a lot at one time for us, since we're on the dry side of the lakes.

Yeesh. Stay safe, Diane! We're now supposed to turn cold and get some snow by this evening, but no predictions of accumulation.

Where's the nice happy medium, 3-4" of pretty, packable snow to enjoy without it causing major grief? Siiiiigh. Smile

Your mind works like mine. This is my thought for winter snow: three inches a week, so it's not too much of a pain to deal with and always looks clean and pretty. By the end of the winter there'd be the requisite amount to recharge the water table or whatever and no one would have had to spend days out of their life moving it. Of course, the weather gods never do this, but I think it at them every year. Smile
