Good luck with everything you have to do, Robin (especially Pegasus)!

And I’m too old to find adventures which involve driving on ice appealing.
I do believe that no one in their right minds would find this appealing. My few experiences involving both ice and cars still scare me.

This is goodnight and not goodbye.

NOT a sequel request, but a bit of a squeal...I just read Fire recently and enjoyed the whole thing, but LOVED "First Flight" to no end. So, thank you!

That third volume lived on as a (very annoying) ghost in Books in Print for years.

Did you know that Early Amazon dredged that up and had it down as an upcoming release, also for years? (I know because I checked it periodically to see if it had a publication date or title beyond Sequel to Hero and the Crown yet.) That may have caused some squealing from teenaged me...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY PETER!! I hope it is/was a wonderful day, with clear sinuses and without ice.

I know they drive you nuts, but I think of the sequel requests as reflections of how much we love the story, and want the characters to go on living. I sure can believe that getting those requests as often as you do would be maddening. Like having kids come in and ask the same question over..and over..and over.. "Can I have a cookie?"

My best wishes for a wonderful, happy day.

I should really be saying country rather than world. Barring SUNSHINE and DRAGONHAVEN most of my books take place in the same world. DEERSKIN and SPINDLE overtly share geography with Damar, for example . . . as does PEGASUS.

I'm so glad to read this! I always felt like a couple of the books were interconnected like that. They had the same sort of flavor, I suppose... but then I just chalked it up to my overactive imagination. Very Happy

But on to more pressing matters, I think we all wish you best luck in getting some good, quality sleep! And happy birthday to Peter. Maybe house elves will have arrived surreptitiously in the night and wrapped all your presents for you. Oh. There goes my imagination again.

You could say that you don't do sequels but you do do linked books. Perhaps a banner on the books to say "A insert world name Book" It might keep the more eager* readers busy searching out all the possible connections, so that you don't get as many emails.

Happy Birthday and adventuring to Peter.

It’s Peter’s birthday.

Many happy returns of the day to Peter and I hope you have both been enjoying his birthday.

Short stories never set as solidly as novels do; there’s always a little give left in them;

Ah, I see. So that's why the short stories have the energy left to do their magic unfolding act on so many occasions? It would be interesting to know if short stories identify themselves as such when you first open the parcel from the Story Council - or is that only something that becomes obvious as you develop the first draft?

I'm also hoping to avoid snow and ice at the moment. Have got a long drive tomorrow, then back again on Saturday. Just why can't Spring come early?

Yes, I'd always rather had this feeling Smile I seem to remember there being a veiled reference to Lissar and her dogs in SPINDLE, and several other hints of a similar kind in various books - It's always fun to try and spot those Smile

I'm with you on that one!!!
Having had two incidents of getting stranded on ice and having to be pushed off (once by half a dozen friends and once by a very nice stranger) and also having ended up in the ditch outside work and had to be towed out, I'm less than keen on driving in snow now - so I'm desperately hoping it will NOT snow on Sunday or Monday, because I'm supposed to be going to concerts on both those nights, and Monday's is about 3 hours drive away. (and there's NO WAY I'm prepared to miss either of them!!!)
*eyes the weather reports balefully*

So, I have everything crossed that you've not had snow(and/or sleet) today (we have) and you can enjoy Peter's birthday adventure properly!
(and Happy Birthday to Peter! Smile )

At least 'can I have a cookie' has an ANSWER. Even if you want to throttle the little brat after the twelfth repetition. :) I mean, cookies EXIST. Sequels . . . bleaugh . . . I'm too tired to make sense.

Ahem. Have you missed the posts in which I have commented on the fact that better than half my novels have started life as short stories? Including PEGASUS, which is now *TWO* NOVELS?

Ha. Maybe I shouldn't have told, as it's long since fixed. I think I finally surmised what had happened when I looked in Books in Print myself, probably after I started working at the public library, and saw that it was in there with exactly the same details that Amazon had.

No, I hadn't missed them... I was wondering how you know, when you first start unpacking a story, what type it might be. It sounds as though your need (from a publication point of view) rarely affects the matter. Smile

Yes, but when you lived in Maine you probably had studded snow tires, a town road crew experienced in keeping the roads passable, the sense to stay off them when they were not passable, and neighbors who were used to winter driving, and equipped their vehicles for it.

One of the things which scares the ***** out of me is driving on any of the roads which lead in the direction of ski areas in bad weather. The folks from down country who can't wait to get to where they're going and have no concept of black ice/suddenly coming upon someone who has lost control of their vehicle/or the limits of 4 wheel drive seem to number in the thousands.

How about crampons for you and the hellhounds? I saw some in pink yesterday.

Well, obviously, I DON'T. :) What happens is that I think I have a feel of the weight and complexity of the story when I start to write it. Then in the writing it . . . sometimes changes. I'm pretty sure I've blogged about the fact that when I sat down to write Sunshine the SHORT STORY it ended at the end of Part One, with Con getting her home. By the time I got there I knew there was the rest of a NOVEL waiting on the other side of the last page.

Yes. The other bozos on the road are the worst. And my secret advantage was four-wheel drive. That was back in the days when front-wheel drive was still comparatively unusual, although my Subaru had it, and it was in the early days of easy flick-on four-wheel. I was CAREFUL, but I will say from this distance that I never got myself in a spot that turning on the four-wheel COULDN'T get me out of.
