Does any of you recommend any of Sherwood Smith's books? Such as A Posse of Princesses

I haven't read that one yet, but I enjoyed her first, CROWN DUEL.

Kat and Mouse was a cute manga-style series of mysteries suitable for younger readers, published by Tokyopop. They stopped after the third volume, leaving things hanging. Now, finally, Tokyopop has published the fourth (presumably final) volume, so I can recommend the series. It's written by Alex de Campi (femme), illustrated by Federica Manfredi, and stars two school misfits: Kat, the daughter of the new science teacher at prestigious Dover Academy, and Mouse (real name, Mee-Seen Huang), who's more of a punk skateboarder than preppy rich kid. Very soon after Kat's father starts teaching at the school, a mysterious thief calling himself (or herself) the Artful Dodger, causes trouble at the school; the two girls decide to investigate, at first to save Kat's father.

Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontė. Very good as I am sure many of you know. The language I enjoyed to.

Note: this is now the Sept-Oct 2009 recommendation thread. I'm going to try bi-monthly threads for both this and What Are You Reading since they've slowed down a bit and it's just silly to lock a thread with 4 messages. Smile

My new favorite non-McKinley book is Graceling by Kristin Cashore. The fantastically kick-ass Katsa grapples with her humanity while she saves the seven kingdoms from a very twisted villain. The love story on the side adds to Katsa's strength, rather than stripping her of anything. I was amazed when I found out that Graceling is Cashore's debut novel. I would have expected Graceling to have an experienced, decorated writer behind the pen.

Good idea! Smile (Wouldn't it be fun, though, if - by the rules of contrariness - this brought out a rash of new recommendations? Of course, you might think of that as a mixed blessing! Smile )

Why, I feel all thin, sort of stretched, if you know what I mean, like butter that has been scraped over too much bread.

Fire by Cashore is coming out in hardcover on Tuesday. It's a companion novel to Graceling, with basically an entirely new cast of characters. I loved Graceling, and I'm looking forward to Fire.

This is another book for kids, but I think adults will enjoy it. GROWN-UPS ARE DUMB! (NO OFFENSE) is written by Alexa Kitchen, who calls herself "The World's Youngest Professional Cartoonist." She's got a pretty good claim: her parents have published her work ever since she was about 5 years old. In 2007, she published DRAWING COMICS IS EASY! (EXCEPT WHEN IT'S HARD). Gotta love her titles! That book was nominated for an Eisner Award. She's now 12 years old.

GROWN-UPS ARE DUMB actually focuses on several preteen characters who appear in Alexa's stories; they deal with everyday stuff such as school, homework, pesky little brothers, messy rooms, and the like. Her art is still quite primitive, but her panel design and plotting are quite sophisticated; these cartoons were drawn when she was 10. I think, if she continues to develop her work, she will be a formidable force in comics.
