Baaaaaaaby alpaca! *wipes smooch marks off the screen*

Thanks for the story. I had no clue alpaca could be transported in cars! I'd assumed they were like horses and needed trailers. Then again, the alpaca I saw at the fiber festival last year were *tiny* little things...for livestock, anyway. They were just *charming*, too. I loved them!

Thanks, b_twin-1. People raise llamas here and I've seen them at county/state fairs, but so far no alpaca. Llamas are cute, but alpaca are cuter. Very Happy

I'm not too surprised that your sedan transport was successful. Some years ago, Smithsonian magazine had an article about llamas that revealed that they would comfortably ride in a minivan. It also said that they could be housetrained, and one interviewee said that their llamas liked to come in the house and watch TV with the rest of the family.

I have read that llamas hum. Do alpaca hum as well as whine?

There are plenty of alpaca that travel about in minivans. It is a very handy way when you don't really want a trailer. (It would have been a much easier way than the sedan!!)
I've certainly heard of people that let their llama come inside ... housetraining is no problem. I would have issues with their tendency to leave "artistic impressions" (in green) around the house though if there was more than one animal involved!
And yes, alpaca "hum" too. Smile Different hums (and whines) depending on the circumstances.

Charming creatures! Incidentally, how do you pronounce them? Is it AL-pack-ah, or al-PAY-cah, or something else?

Lovely story! Smile I really do like the look of alpaca and they sound like great characters. Do the mums normally have single babies or twins? Donny looks very imposing.

We went over to the Llama park in Sussex a couple of summers ago and that was very interesting. I notice that they won't sell llamas or alpaca unless they're going somewhere to be with others of their kind, so that's very responsible of the farm from what you say about the need for company.

Remind me never to come between alpaca who are settling their issues! Smile

Singles. Twins are exceptionally rare (esp. live ones). They aren't built to carry and deliver (or raise) twins. It does happen very occasionally - and only in countries where they get a lot of specialised care because they wouldn't be full term deliveries.

Well if you are going to be *picky* - yes you are right.
It was more accurate than the 2nd option though. Razz

There was just a story on the national news here tonight about a golf course in North Carolina that uses llamas as caddies:

Maybe you could rent out your alpaca!

We may be discussing alpacas rather than llamas, but I am still irresistibly reminded of the llama song. I'm so sorry, everyone. Wink

Haha that's on the favourite's list from way back. Wink My fav bit (of course) is the line "Not a llama" and the pic is an alpaca.... closely followed by "Half a llama" and the pic is a small llama...
I know. I please easily. *g*
